Evaluation of a Non-Personalized Optopalatographic Device for Prospective Use in Functional Post-Stroke Dysphagia Therapy.

OBJECTIVE: Stroke survivors commonly suffer from dysphagia, originating from oro-facial impairments which affect swallowing function. Functional therapy often employs tongue exercises that require the patient to perform short motion sequences. Evaluating the patient's performance on those exercises is difficult, because there is no reliable form of visual feedback. METHODS: We propose an optopalatographic device that does not require a personalized dental retainer and is capable of measuring tongue movement trajectories intraorally. The device features nine optical proximity sensors at 100 Hz

Caregivers' perception of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder regarding to the communicative profile of their children after a communicative orientation program.

PURPOSE: To analyze the perception of caregivers of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder regarding the functional profile of their children's communication in three moments, before and after the guidelines. METHODS: Caregivers of 62 children diagnosed with ASD (AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER) participated in this study, divided into three groups of interventions. All interventions included a program with five pre-set monthly orientation sessions to provide information on the development of communication and encourage practical communication activities in daily life. In G1 (group 1), the caregiver

Assessment of the quality of the change of surgical wound dressings by the nursing staff in a university hospital of Tunis.

BACKGROUND: Infection of surgical wounds is the main cause of nosocomial infections. In the event of a defect in the care chain, in particular, during the change of the postoperative dressings, the infectious risk would be increased. AIM: To evaluate the gestures of change of dressing practiced by nurses of a university hospital department of surgery, in order to observe the insufficiencies. METHODS: We conducted a two-month-duration prospective, descriptive study having a qualitative approach, consisting of a protocol for observing nursing procedures carried out during the implementation of…

Predicting language outcomes for young prelinguistic children with developmental delay.

The purpose of this study was to examine potential relationships between children's prelinguistic communication behaviors and subsequent (12 months later) expressive and receptive language outcomes. Participants included 25 toddlers with developmental delay and their mothers. The dyads were observed during natural interactions at 6-month intervals over a 12-month period for a total of 3 observation points (O1, O2, O3). Children's rate of nonverbal behavior that is often perceived as communication by adults was identified at O1 and O2. In the investigation, the children's intentional nonverbal

[Mirror movement due to the medial frontal lobe lesion].

We reported a case with acquired mirror movement in upper limbs due to the lesion of right medial frontal lobe including supplementary motor area, and also discussed a possible mechanism underlying it. A 59-year-old right-handed woman developed left hemiparesis caused by cerebral hemorrhage in the right frontoparietal lobe, on April 5, 1981. She had right hemiparesis and right hemianopsia due to cerebral hemorrhage in the left parieto-occipital lobe, 13 days later. As the patient was recovering from paresis, mirror movement appeared on upper limbs. The features of the mirror movement of this c

[Intellectual and mood disorders in multiple sclerosis].

Reports of frequency and interpretation of intellectual and mood disorders differ in multiple sclerosis (MS). Forty-one patients with MS defined according to MacAlpine's criteria were evaluated by psychometric tests (WAIS) and neuropsychologic examinations (study of language, gnosic and praxic activities, dynamic gestural organization, memory and learning) together with, in 24 of them, the AMDP psychopathologic rating scale. Intellectual disorders were noted in 65 p. 100 of patients. Although more frequent in severe and chronic forms they were nevertheless of early onset since more than a half

Knee hemarthros secondary to osteochondritis dissecans (König disease).

A case is presented of a hemarthrosis associated with osteochondritis dissecans in a young man who arrived in the Emergency unit due to tender and swelling of his right knee one hour after a slightly rotational gesture of the lower limb. Many years before the patient suffered a sports injury in the same knee, but it was never assessed. Radiography studies showed bone fragments inside the synovial capsule, and the joint aspiration was compatible with hemarthrosis. A review of the available information of this uncommon condition is also presented.

[Semiology of apraxic disorders].

Apraxia is the inability to carry out a motor act despite intact motor and sensory systems, good comprehension, and full cooperation. Performance in gesture processing tests is generally rendered by classifying patients's profile according to the classic clinical labels of ideomotor and ideational apraxia. Recently cognitive neuropsychological models allow to get a better understanding of the complexity of limb apraxia. In this paper, we studied ideomotor and ideational apraxia with a cognitivist approach in examination. Dressing and constructional apraxias will be also described in this paper

[Antidepressives and anesthesia].

Anesthesia and anti-depressors have a bad name: is their reputation justified? In the opinion of the Anesthesiologist, it is justified in a large part concerning the IMAO, because there is no absolutely secure solution in large scale surgery. On the other hand, the value of accidents must be reset in its proper place. Only the hypertensive increase is very worrying, not so the drop in tension, and it is often the therapeutical gesture which induces the catastrophe. As far as the tricyles are concerned, they never lead to real problems, if we are aware of the treatment to be applied.

Multimodal Language Processing in Children With Developmental Language Disorder: The Influence of Verbal and Visuospatial Memory.

PURPOSE: This study investigates how verbal and visuospatial memory capacities contribute to the processing and comprehension of pragmatic meanings that are expressed multimodally in children with and without developmental language disorder (DLD). METHOD: Seventy-seven children (33 with DLD, 44 typically developing [TD]), aged 5-10 years, completed standardized memory tasks and participated in a visual-world eye-tracking experiment assessing both online processing and offline comprehension of sentences with simple and complex pragmatic meanings (interrogativity and indirect requests, respecti

The "social" and "interpersonal" body in spatial cognition. The role of agency and interagency.

In order to interact effectively, we need to represent our action as produced by human beings. According to direct access theories, the first steps of visual information processing offer us an informed direct grasp of the situation, especially when social and interpersonal components are implicated. Biological system detection may be the gateway of such smart processes and then may influence initial stages of perception fostering adaptive social behaviour. To investigate early neural correlates of human agency detection in ecological situations with more high or low social impact, we compared

Anatomical and spatial matching in imitation: Evidence from left and right brain-damaged patients.

Imitation is a sensorimotor process whereby the visual information present in the model's movement has to be coupled with the activation of the motor system in the observer. This also implies that greater the similarity between the seen and the produced movement, the easier it will be to execute the movement, a process also known as ideomotor compatibility. Two components can influence the degree of similarity between two movements: the anatomical and the spatial component. The anatomical component is present when the model and imitator move the same body part (e.g., the right hand) while the

Risk factors for the incidence and persistence of suicide-related outcomes: a 10-year follow-up study using the National Comorbidity Surveys.

BACKGROUND: We report prospective associations of baseline risk factors with the first onset and persistence of suicide-related outcomes (SROs; ideation, plans, gestures, and attempts) over a 10-year interval among respondents who participated in both the 1990-02 National Comorbidity Survey (NCS) and the 2000-02 National Comorbidity Survey follow-up (NCS-2). METHODS: A total of 5001 NCS respondents were re-interviewed (87.6% of baseline sample) in the NCS-2. Three sets of baseline (NCS) risk factors were considered as predictors of the first onset and persistence of SROs: socio-demographics, …

Visual-imitative dissociation apraxia.

Liepmann posited that, in right handers, the left parietal lobe contains movement formulas or representations. Therefore, performance failures may be induced by degraded representations, a failure of these representations to influence motor systems or a failure of stimuli to fully access these representations. Imitation may help the performance of subjects with degraded representations. However, patients who have impaired visual access to movement representations may perform more poorly with imitation than to verbal command. Trajectories of repetitive 'slicing' gestures made by a previously re…

Coordinate-Independent Ultrasound Assessment for Complex Tissue Kinematics: A Preliminary Study on Median Nerve Mobility.

OBJECTIVE: This paper presents an ultrasound strain-divergence imaging technique, which quantifies complex tissue kinematics without being constrained by imaging coordinates. An in vivo application of the technique was demonstrated on median nerve (MN) mobility. Transverse mobility of MN, a potential biomarker for evaluating MN entrapment in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), is featured with large variations across different active gestures, individuals, and operators, so it remains inconclusive in literature. METHODS: Ultrasound data of the MN in the transverse view during active thumb and finge…

Patient … n featured patients using vague descriptors, figurative speech, lengthy explanations and broad hand gestures. Alignments were characterised by patients using well-defined terms, succinct descriptions and precise gestures for symptoms with an exact location. Abdominal sensations reported as 'pain' were almost always documented compared with expressions of ' …
