Primary neoplasms of the patella account for less than 1% of all primary bone tumors of the lower extremity, the most frequent of them being the giant cell tumor of bone, the chondroblastoma, and the aneurysmal bone cyst. Herein, we report the case of a 29-year-old woman with an active giant cell tumor of the patella (GCTP) with its clinical and radiological features and a brief review of the literature.

A 75-year-old woman with new onset headaches and left vision loss, temporal scalp tenderness, and jaw claudication was found to have biopsy-proven giant cell arteritis (GCA). Despite treatment and improvement with prednisone, she later developed left orbital apex syndrome, and an orbital biopsy revealed aspergillosis. After antifungal treatment, extraocular motility improved although vision in the left eye remained no light perception. Clinicians should be aware that fungal orbital apex disease may mimic or complicate steroid-treated GCA.

Central giant cell granuloma is a benign, aggressive neoplasm composed of multinucleated giant cells that almost exclusively occurs in the jaws though extra- gnathic incidence is rare. Multifocal CGCGs of the jaws are very rare and suggestive of systemic diseases such as hyperparathyroidism, an inherited syndrome such as Noonan- like multiple giant cell lesion syndrome or other disorders.Very few cases of multifocal CGCGs in the jaws without any concomitant systemic disease have been reported. This paper describes an unusual case reported to the Oral Surgery Department of Dr. D.Y.Patil Dental …

INTRODUCTION: Giant cell arteritis most commonly involves the external carotid branches. Although they are less typical, extra-cephalic forms have also been reported.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 59-year-old female patient who developed bilateral, painful breast nodules with fever and altered general status since two months. Two weeks later, she presented frontal headache and scalp tenderness. A colour duplex ultrasound of the temporal artery showed a halo sign. The results of a breast needle biopsy were inconclusive but the temporal artery biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of giant cell

Introduction. Tenosynovial giant cell tumors (TGCT) emerge from the synovium and can behave aggressively. Surgical resection is the standard treatment. However, up to half of the patients with diffuse type show recurrences. Several additional treatments have been applied to reduce recurrences; none of these treatments was proven to be superior to surgical resection solely. This article describes the results of additional cryosurgery to surgical resection. Materials and Methods. We retrospectively evaluated 141 TGCT patients, between 1999 and 2007. Twelve patients had additional cryosurgery. Th

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) and polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) are both more common among people of North European decent than among Mediterran … e temporal arteries may aid in GCA diagnosis. Temporal artery biopsy showing vasculitis, often with giant cells, confirms GCA diagnosis. In cases with negative biopsy one must rely on the clinical presentation and laboratory abnormalities. The diagnosis of PMR is made primarily on clinical grounds. Other conditions that may mimic GCA or PMR must be excluded. …

PURPOSE: Tenosynovial giant cell tumor (TGCT), a rare locally aggressive neoplasm of the synovium of joints and tendon sheaths, is associated with joint destruction, inflammation, pain, and swelling, in part due to colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor-bearing macrophages recruited to the tumor by genetic elevation of colony-stimulating factor 1 activity. The most common treatment is surgery, although promising pharmacologic treatments are in development. Patient-reported outcome (PRO) instruments are critical end points in demonstrating the clinical relevance of standard oncologic outcome meas

INTRODUCTION: Giant cell granuloma (GCG) is a non-neoplastic osseous proliferative lesion of unknown etiology. Although a benign disease process, GCG can be locally destructive. It is extremely rare to have a pediatric case of GCG occurring in the nasal cavity with intracranial invasion.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report a case of an aggressive and recurrent giant cell granuloma with intracranial invasion in a 10 years old female patient which was completely excised with endoscopic craniofacial resection.
DISCUSSION: A literature review on pathogenesis, diagnosis and management is also perform

A 70-year-old man presented with respiratory distress and proximal muscle weakness shortly after biopsy of a left forearm mass. The biopsy showed giant cell myositis, and serological investigations identified a grossly elevated serum creatine kinase level, suggesting skeletal muscle damage. Serum troponin T was also high, but troponin I was normal. Serum antiacetylcholine receptor antibodies were positive, and imaging showed a thymoma. He recovered well following intravenous immunoglobulin and corticosteroids, and later underwent thymectomy. He is currently in sustained remission, with no clin

BACKGROUND: To identify clinical and laboratory factors contributing to the diagnosis of giant cell arteritis (GCA) and develop a diagnostic algorithm for the evaluation of GCA.
METHODS: Retrospective review of 213 consecutive cases of temporal artery biopsy (TAB) seen at a single academic center over a 10-year period (2000-2009). Pathologic specimens were re-reviewed and agreement between the original and second readings was assessed. A composite clinical suspicion score was created by adding 1 point for each of the following criteria: anterior extracranial circulation ischemia, new onset he

Giant cell reparative granuloma (GCRG) is a rare, benign intra osseous lytic lesion occurring especially in gnathis bone but also seen in feet and hands. It has similar clinical and radiological presentations than giant cell tumor, chondroblastoma, aneurysmal bone cyst, and hyperparathyroidism brown tumors but with specific histological findings We report a case of a GCRG of hallux phalanx in 18 years old patient appearing many years after enchondroma curettage and grafting. Radiographs showed a multiloculated osteolytic lesions involving whole phalanx with cortical thinning and without fluid-

Cornu cutaneum (CC) is a clinical term that describes the horn-like keratotic lesions extending vertically from the skin. Benign, premalignant or malignant lesions may be present at the base of CC. Seborrhoeic keratosis and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are the most commonly reported benign and malignant forms, respectively. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) at the base is rare. Here, we report on an 85-year old female patient having multiple CC lesions, one being giant on her face and two of the lesions diagnosed with BCC at the base. This case is of significance due to the presence of giant and mul

A 79-year-old woman presents with new-onset pain in her neck and both shoulders. She takes 7.5 mg of prednisone per day for giant-cell arteritis. Occipital tenderness and diplopia developed 11 months before presentation. At that time, her erythrocyte sedimentation rate was elevated, at 78 mm per hour, and a temporal-artery biopsy revealed granulomatous arteritis. The diplopia resolved after 6 days of treatment with 60 mg of prednisone daily. Neither headache nor visual symptoms developed when the glucocorticoids were tapered. How should this patient’s care be managed?

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is the most common systemic vasculitis in the elderly. Over several decades there has been an increase in its incidence, although this trend has changed in North America, northern Europe and in Israel. The signs and symptoms of GCA can be classified into four general subsets: manifestations of cranial arteritis, extra-cranial arteritis, systemic symptoms and polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR). The diagnosis is based on clinical characteristics and established by the presence of inflammatory markers. However, the only specific diagnostic test is a temporal artery biopsy. Th

We provide an overview of imaging, histopathology, genetics, and multidisciplinary treatment of giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB), an intermediate, locally aggressive but rarely metastasizing tumor. Overexpression of receptor activator of nuclear factor κB ligand (RANKL) by mononuclear neoplastic stromal cells promotes recruitment of numerous reactive multinucleated giant cells. Conventional radiographs show a typical eccentric lytic lesion, mostly located in the meta-epiphyseal area of long bones. GCTB may also arise in the axial skeleton and very occasionally in the small bones of hands and fe…

We report a case of a 40-year-old woman who developed generalized muscle weakness over a period of 2 months. Physical examination revealed palpable masses in her arms and hands. Serum creatine kinase levels were elevated. Electromyography showed myopathic changes and 3 Hz repetitive nerve stimulation revealed a decremental pattern on repetitive nerve stimulation. Muscle MRI demonstrated increased signal intensity in the biceps brachii on T1-weighted images. Chest CT scan showed a mediastinal mass suggestive of thymoma. Muscle biopsy revealed giant cell polymyositis. The patient was treated wit

This case report concerns the diagnosis of two independent chronic diseases in a patient hospitalized for stroke, myasthenia gravis (MG) and giant cell arteritis (GCA). MG has been found to be associated with several diseases, but there are very few cases documenting its coexistence with GCA. We report the case of a 79-year-old woman initially hospitalized for stroke. Patient's concurrent symptoms of blepharoptosis, dysphagia, and proximal muscle weakness were strongly suggestive of myasthenia gravis. The persistent low-grade fever and elevated inflammatory markers in combination with the visu

Noninfectious ascending aortitis is a very rare cause of ascending aortic aneurysm. We report a case of the truly fortuitous finding of this rare condition in a 67-year-old man operated on for an ascending aortic aneurysm associated with dystrophic aortic valve regurgitation. Intraoperative inspection revealed dissection of the aorta just above the left main coronary artery. A modified Bentall operation was performed. The pathological diagnosis was giant cell arteritis.
