Non-plaque-induced gingival diseases.

While plaque-induced gingivitis is one of the most common human inflammatory diseases, several non-plaque-induced gingival diseases are less common but often of major significance for patients. The non-plaque-induced gingival lesions are often manifestations of systemic conditions, but they may also represent pathologic changes limited to gingival tissues. A classification is proposed, based on the etiology of the lesions and includes: Genetic/Developmental disorders; Specific infections; Inflammatory and immune conditions and lesions; Reactive processes; Neoplasms; Endocrine, Nutritional and …

A Rare Case of Gingival Cyst in a Child.

Gingival cysts, which are more frequently reported as gingival cysts of adults (GCA), are soft tissue cystic lesions of odontogenic origin that are infrequently seen, especially in children. These lesions usually appear as localized firm elevations on the facial gingiva in the anterior segment of the mandible. The purpose of this paper is to present a rare case of a gingival cyst discovered on the palatal aspect of the posterior maxilla in a four-year-old child. The lesion was treated with excisional biopsy.

Esthetic evaluation of dental and gingival asymmetries.

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study was to determine which smile asymmetries were less esthetic, dental or gingival. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Laypeople (297), generalists (223), prosthodontists (50) and orthodontists (49), evaluated the esthetics of digitally-modified images taken from the same frontal intra-oral photograph, using the same lips, simulating upper maxillary midline shift, occlusal plane inclination, asymmetric incisal edge and asymmetric gingival migration. The images were later paired into 3 groups. RESULTS: The only ones considered esthetic were the asymmetric incisal edge of the

Gingival enlargement in partial hemifacial hyperplasia.

Hemifacial hypertrophy is a rare developmental disorder, characterized by unilateral enlargement of facial tissues. The hemifacial hyperplasia is classified as true hemifacial hypertrophy and partial hemifacial hypertrophy. It is unilateral enlargement of viscerocranial condition in which not all structures are enlarged. We present a rare case of gingival enlargement in partial hemifacial hyperplasia highlighting the clinical and radiological findings with the corrective treatment offered for gingival enlargement.

Gingival recession--can orthodontics be a cure?

Does orthodontic treatment help or hinder a patient's periodontal status? What factors affect the periodontium? Can those factors be managed in a way that remedies existing periodontal issues? A 35-year-old woman presented with severe gingival recession and a unilateral Class II malocclusion. The treatment plan was to correct the malocclusion in a way that torques the roots more onto bone and to change her dental hygiene methods. With an extensive review of the literature, this case review attempts to make sense of the enigma of gingival recession and demonstrates an excellent treatment soluti

On the minimally invasive approach to the gingival recession.

Some aspects of pathogenesis and therapeutic approach to the gingival recession are discussed in this short communication with the example of a typical case from Russia, where excessive socket curettage after a tooth extraction resulted in a marked gingival recession. Subgingival plaque and calculus can be secondary to recession. An argument about plaque as a source of microorganisms might be plausible in case of inflammation, although various microorganisms are normal for the oral cavity. From the viewpoint of general pathology, being an atrophic condition, recession can progress due to repea

Recurrent gingival swelling in pregnant women.

The aim of this case report is to present a rare case which has been reported with the history of small nodule like growth on mandibular buccal and lingual area. Thirty year old pregnant women reported a nodule on left mandibular buccal and lingual region. The lesion was surgically excised and sent for biopsy to differentiate from kimura's disease, pyogenic granuloma, epithelioid angiosarcoma (EH). Histologically lesion shows proliferation of endothelial cells along blood vessels suggesting epithelioid hemangioma. The purpose of this report is to discuss and differentiate EH and other vascular

An unusual case of idiopathic gingival fibromatosis.

Idiopathic gingival fibromatosisis, a condition of undetermined cause can develop as an isolated disorder, but mostly it is associated with some syndrome. It usually begins at the time of eruption of permanent teeth but can develop with the eruption of deciduous dentition and rarely present at birth. This case report describes an unusual case of non-syndromic generalized idiopathic gingival fibromatosis in a 15-year-old male present since birth. Surgical treatment in the form of ledge and wedge procedure with internal bevel gingivectomy was performed. No recurrence of enlargement was seen afte

Non-drug induced gingival enlargement.

Gingival enlargement refers to an increase in the size of the gingival tissue. The etiology varies, and often is multifactorial; however, local and systemic conditions, disease, and idiopathic factors may contribute to gingival enlargement. Tissue consistency can vary from soft and spongy to dense, typically appearing darker in shade compared to the drug-induced gingival enlargement. Treatment modalities usually involve surgical removal of excess tissue, non-surgical debridement, use of chemotherapeutic agents, and/or elimination or mitigation of contributing factors and conditions.

Drug-induced gingival enlargement: an overview.

The first documented case of drug-induced gingival enlargement was reported in 1939. Since that time, specific medications have been associated with this condition. Although the biologic mechanisms responsible for drug-mediated gingival enlargement remain unclear, a multifactorial etiology is considered to be responsible, with contributing factors including age, genetic predisposition, and local conditions. While the role of plaque remains to be completely elucidated, there is abundant clinical evidence demonstrating at least partial resolution of drug-induced gingival enlargement following im

An unusual clinical presentation of gingival melanoacanthoma.

Gingival melanoacanthoma is a rare, benign pigmented lesion characterized clinically by sudden onset and rapid growth of a macular brown black lesion and histologically by acanthosis of superficial epithelium and proliferation of dendritic melanocytes. This article reports a previously undescribed case of pigmented unilateral diffuse gingival enlargement, which on histopathological examination proved to be melanoacanthoma. Intraoral examination revealed pigmented unilateral diffuse gingival enlargement in relation to second and third quadrants buccally, palatally/lingually. Based on these clin

Pemphigus vulgaris presenting as gingival involvement.

Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is an autoimmune blistering disease affecting the mucous membrane and skin. Typically, oral lesions appear before skin lesions, and in a majority of the cases only oral lesions are present. The dentist may then be the first to recognize and diagnose this disease. It is unusual for PV to present over the gingiva as a primary site of involvement. Diagnosis is based on clinical presentation and confirmed by histopathological study. Early diagnosis and management can prevent the uneven life- threatening effects of this potentially chronic mucocutaneous disorder. The case se

Multiple gingival metastasis of adenocarcinoma of the lung.

Metastasis to the gingival soft tissues is an extremely rare phenomenon, and metastasis of multiple lesions (i.e. more than 2 lesions), is even more hard to find. In this study, we have reported a rare case of lung adenocarcinoma, which metastasized to the maxillary (2 lesions) and mandibular gingivae (1 lesion) in a 57 year old male patient. Metastasis was also seen to the vertebrae. The differential diagnosis consisted of acute myelomonocytic leukemia, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, haemangioma, pyogenic granuloma, giant cell granuloma, peripheral fibroma, primary gingival carcinoma and secon

Hereditary gingival fibromatosis with distinctive facies.

Hereditary gingival enlargement also known as gingivitis or familial elephantiasis is a rare type of gingival enlargement. It appears as an isolated autosomal dominant disorder or maybe associated with other conditions. Oral manifestations may vary from minimal involvement of only tuberosity area and the buccal gingiva around the lower molars to a generalized enlargement inhibiting eruption of the teeth. This paper discusses the case of a 13-year-old female patient with distinctive facial characteristics who presented to the department with a chief complaint of swollen gums since 1 year. She h…

[Orthodontic treatment of gingival recession: indications].

Gingival recession is a complex phenomenon. Root coverage results can be predictable regarding to the anatomy of the area. This includes the width of keratinized and attached gingiva, the buccolingual dimension of both soft tissue and alveolar bone, and the position and angulation of the teeth. If the tooth is out of the envelope of the alveolar process, with alveolar bone dehiscence and low thickness of the marginal soft tissue, the recession risk is important. Many techniques have been introduced to treat gingival recession. But lots of failures are linked to tooth position. An adequate orth
