Bacillus cereus is a common laboratory and environmental contaminant. Reports of severe infections are mainly limited to immunocompromised individuals. In reported cases, the time interval between bacteraemia and neuro-invasion appears to be very short, highlighting the importance of rapid and definitive identification and susceptibility testing of invasive B. cereus. We report a case of a neonatal B. cereus bacteraemia complicated by a brain abscess from a neonatal intensive care unit. The neonate presented with bradycardia and desaturations with increased oxygen requirements. Initial blood c

We herein present the case of an adult male patient who consulted for lower extremity edema, a 2- month history of fever and oppressive chest pain radiating to the left arm. He referred neither contact with breeding animals nor consumption of unpasteurized dairy products. A diagnosis of endocarditis was confirmed by cardiac studies. Since the empirical treatment with cephalotin, ampicillin and gentamicin failed, the patient underwent aortic valve replacement. A total of four blood cultures were positive with a gram-negative rod. Bacterial identification was performed using the API 20 NE techni

Anthrax is caused by infection with Bacillus anthracis, a spore forming, rod-shaped, encapsulated gram positive bacteria. The disease manifests itself in distinct ways depending on the route of entry of infective bacterial spores: cutaneous, inhalational, and gastrointestinal. Though rare in humans, inhalational anthrax has become a major concern due to the capacity for spores to be weaponized. The limited success of antibiotic therapy has motivated investigation of complementary therapeutic strategies that target the bacteria's secreted toxin. The zinc-dependent metalloproteinase lethal facto

We report a case of sudden death after gas gangrene. A 67-year-old male patient with diabetes mellitus and chronic renal failure (on haemodialysis three times a week) presented in the surgical emergency department with a severe swelling and crepitation in the right groin. No signs of trauma were present-except for a well-healed, 1-year-old scar after femoro-popliteal bypass surgery. Two days earlier, he had presented to the internal medicine department with epigastric pain and had left against medical advice. On readmission the patient was initially conscious and in a stable cardiopulmonary co

Ten gram-negative, pleomorphic, rod-shaped isolates from coryza-like, respiratory diseased laying and broiler chickens were identified as Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale. All O. rhinotracheale isolates showed typical biochemical and enzymatic characteristics. Also, all isolates showed hemagglutinating activity with glutaraldehyde-fixed erythrocytes. On the basis of this property, a rabbit-raised antiserum was produced for an isolate. All isolates were identified by antiserum by hemagglutination-inhibition tests. No cross-reactions were observed when O. rhinotracheale isolates were tested with

Tyzzer's disease has been detected in nine unrelated, commercial rabbitries. During the acute stage of the disease, recently weaned rabbits showed profuse watery diarrhoea. Mortality was between 14.2 and 41.2% during the first three weeks of the outbreaks. In surviving animals, there was a chronic evolution with depression, anorexia, loss of weight and sometimes extreme cachexia. Reproduction animals were less badly affected. Multifocal hepatic necrosis, focal myocardial necrosis, patches of mucosal necrosis in ileum, caecum and colon and marked caecal oedema were most prominent at autopsy. In

BACKGROUND: The most commonly isolated organisms in a parapneumonic effusion include S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, and S. aureus. If unusual organisms are isolated from the pleural space, further investigation is warranted to locate the primary source. We present a patient with an infected chronic renal cyst found to have an empyema secondary to Proteus mirabilis to highlight the importance of further diagnostic workup when encountering unusual organisms in the pleural space.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 40-year-old African-American female, with a past medical history of asthma and sickle cell trait,

A Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped aerotolerant anaerobe was isolated from pig feces and designated as strain YH-dor228T. Phylogenetic analysis using 16 S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the strain was most closely related to Dorea hominis NSJ-36T, with 96.6% similarity. The phylogenomic tree revealed that the strain formed a distinct cluster within the genus Dorea. The average nucleotide identity, average amino acid identity, and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between the strain and the most closely related strains within genus Dorea ranged from 73.4 to 74.9, 66.4-70.5, and 20.0-22.2%,

An increasing number of reports have described the pathogenic nature of several non-classical Bordetella spp. Among them, Bordetella hinzii and Bordetella pseudohinzii have been implicated in a myriad of respiratory-associated infections in humans and animals. We report the isolation of a genetically close relative of B. hinzii and B. pseudohinzii from the sputum of a woman in her early 60s with extensive bronchiectasis who presented with fever and brown colored sputum. The isolate had initially been identified as Bordetella avium by API 20NE, the identification system for non-enteric Gram-neg

Herein, we describe a rare case of Corynebacterium jeikeium endocarditis that silently progressed in a 65-year-old man undergoing hemodialysis. Because routine monthly blood examination revealed high C-reactive protein levels, blood cultures were collected, although he had no symptom and was afebrile. After 2 days, a Gram-positive rod was detected in one set of the blood culture. Furthermore, transthoracic echocardiography revealed new aortic regurgitation (AR) and vegetations, and, therefore, infective endocarditis was suspected. Transesophageal echocardiography showed vegetations with a maxi

Streptococcus agalactiae infective endocarditis is a rare condition with high mortality owing to complications of large vegetations and systemic emboli. A 49-year-old man was found dead in his house. He had a history of hepatic cirrhosis and had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 2years previously. He had presented with a high fever 10days before his death. An autopsy revealed 50mL of purulent pericardial effusion, and S. agalactiae was detected from the culture of this pericardial effusion. Two slender rope-like vegetations were present at the right aortic valve cusp and noncoronary aortic v

Between 2008 and 2009, three pet ferrets from different sources presented with acute episode of dyspnoea. Cytological examination of pleural exudates revealed severe purulent inflammation with abundant clusters of rod-shaped microorganisms with a clear surrounding halo. Treatment was ineffective and the ferrets died 2-5 days later. Two ferrets were subjected to necropsy examination, which revealed pyothorax, mediastinal lymphadenopathy and multiple white nodules (1-2mm) in the lungs. Microscopical examination showed multifocal necrotizing-pyogranulomatous pleuropneumonia and lymphadenitis with

From the mandibular lymph nodes of wild red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) hunted in the region of Gmünd, Lower Austria, two gram-negative, oxidase- and urease-positive, coccoid rod-shaped bacteria (strains 257 and 284) were isolated. Cells were fast growing, nonmotile, and agglutinated with monospecific anti-Brucella (M) serum. Both strains were biochemically identified as Ochrobactrum anthropi by using the API 20NE test. However, sequencing of the 16S rRNA and recA genes clearly identified strains 257 and 284 as Brucella spp. Further molecular analysis by omp2a/b gene sequencing, multilocus sequence

Clostridium haemolyticum causes bacillary hemoglobinuria (BH), an infectious and usually fatal disease that occurs mostly in cattle, which is clinically characterized by jaundice, hemoglobinuria, and anemia. The trematode Fasciola hepatica has been commonly reported as the main predisposing factor that triggers this condition. The authors evaluated 20 naturally occurring cases of bovine BH to characterize the pathology and pathogenesis of the disease. Grossly, the most consistent finding was a large, frequently single focus of necrosis surrounded by a red to purple halo, observed most frequent

Purpose. Low-virulence anaerobic bacteria, especially the Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes), have been thought to be a new pathogeny for a series of disc diseases. However, until now, there has been no histological evidence to confirm this link. The purpose of this study was to confirm the presence of P. acnes in nonpyogenic intervertebral discs via histological observation. Method. Degenerated intervertebral discs were harvested from 76 patients with low back pain and/or sciatica but without any symptoms of discitis or spondylodiscitis. The samples were cultured under anaerobic conditions an

A gram-positive, endospore-forming bacterial strain CQH2019T was isolated from pit mud samples used in the production of Chinese strong flavor Baijiu. Cells of strain CQH2019T are anaerobic, Gram-positive, rod-shaped, with 0.5-0.8 µm in width and 3-5 µm in length. The optimal growth was observed at 37 °C, pH 5.5 and 0.5% (w/v) NaCl. This obligate chemoorganoheterotrophic strain utilizes complex organic compounds, carbohydrates (L-arabinose, D-xylose, D-galactose, D-fructose, D-mannose, L-rhamnose, and D-tagatose), organic salts (potassium gluconate), glycosides (amygdalin, arbutin, salicin). OBJECT: Antibiotic-impregnated shunts have yet to find widespread use in the developing world, largely due to cost. Given potential differences in the microbial spectrum, their effectiveness in preventing shunt infection for populations in low-income countries may differ and has not been demonstrated. This study is the first to compare the efficacy of a Bactiseal shunt system with a non-antibiotic-impregnated system in a developing country.
METHODS: The Bactiseal Universal Shunt (BUS) was placed in 80 consecutive Ugandan children who required a shunt. In this retrospective cohort study, the o
