Three days for weeping: dreams, emotions, and death in the Peruvian Amazon.

Funeral customs and beliefs about the dead among the Matsigenka of Peru reflect great anxiety over the contagion of death and the power of the dead over the living. In this article, these beliefs and practices are interpreted in light of a native theory about emotion. For the Matsigenka, excessive displays of emotion, especially grief, anger, and aggressive sexuality, cause a vicious cycle of unhappiness, social disruption, illness, and death. Moving beyond a culturally particular, symbolic-interpretive perspective, the author also draws on personal experiences both in the field and at home to…

Counselling gay men with multiple loss and survival problems: the bereavement group as a transitional object.

When AIDS is becoming a chronic disease, gay men with multiple loss experiences can easily turn into a forgotten group of widowers. Due to new medical treatment HIV-infected gay men are living longer and also have to deal with loss and surviving. This paper argues in favour of group grief therapy for multiple loss and survival problems, within the scope of peer support in the gay community during the AIDS era. In this group psychotherapy special attention is given to the influence of a low gay self-esteem on the grief process and surviving strategies.

Homicide bereavement counseling: a survey of providers.

The opinions of 116 homicide bereavement caregivers of interventions recommended for survivors were solicited. Presenting problems, optimum treatment framework, and reasons for treatment failure were also surveyed. Respondents preferred methods associated with crisis intervention and grief counseling. Other clinical techniques were rated as moderately helpful, except family therapy, which was highly rated. Suppression of trauma imagery was deemed harmful to survivors, though diversion was recommended often in cases of complicated grief. Caregivers who are themselves survivors appeared more sen…

Comparison of Therapist-Guided Versus Self-Guided Internet-Based Stress Inoculation Therapy (ISIT) on Psychological Distress Symptoms in Women After Miscarriage in Iran: A Study Protocol of a Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Miscarriage can lead to various psychological consequences such as grief, anxiety, depression, and psychological distress. Although women who experience a miscarriage may not have formed a bond with their unborn child, the intensity of grief following an abortion does not significantly differ from the loss of other first-degree relatives. The present study will be conducted to compare therapist-guided versus self-guided internet-based stress inoculation therapy (ISIT) on psychological distress symptoms in women after miscarriage. METHODS: This study will be a randomized c…

Death notification in clinical practice: protocols, clinician impact and family outcomes.

Death notification (DN) is a critical clinical task that initiates and influences the bereavement trajectory and carries profound implications for clinician well-being. Evidence links DN quality to cognitive-emotional processing of loss, attachment reorganisation and mobilisation of social support. A diverse ecosystem of DN protocols offers stepwise guidance, but outcome data, cultural adaptation and notifier support remain limited. Drawing on DN protocol methodology, DN and prolonged grief disorder mechanisms and contemporary grief theory, this State of the Science article argues that DN shou…

Parental Financial Support Needs After the Death of a Child From Cancer.

Pediatric cancer treatment and child death impose significant financial strain on families-yet we do not know which financial supports are needed. We sought to assess this through a survey conducted 4-5 years following a child's death. Parents rated the usefulness of six financial supports and identified additional required supports. Financial needs included paid time off work (54%), funeral/burial costs (46%), rent/mortgage assistance (37%), support for medical bills (30%), and food (28%). Additional financial needs included travel expenses, paid housing, and grief therapy. Parents emphasized…

Content Analysis of Select YouTube Postings: Comparisons of Reactions to the Sandy Hook and Aurora Shootings and Hurricane Sandy.

This study details an innovative and methodical content analysis of 2,207 YouTube comments from four different YouTube videos (e.g., breaking news or memorials) related to the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School and Aurora theater mass shootings and the catastrophic Hurricane Sandy. As expected, YouTube comments associated with the Sandy Hook shootings (particularly those from a memorial video) were especially likely to feature compassion and grief with lessened hostility. This study highlights differing online contexts by which individuals show grief and related emotions following man-made and …

Death and bereavement in the First World War: the Australian experience.

The First World War was a turning point in the cultural history of death and bereavement in Australia. The mass deaths of some 60,000 soldiers overseas led to communal rituals of mourning for the war dead and minimal public expressions of private grief. The mass slaughter of so many young men and the interminable grief of so many families devalued the deaths of civilians at home and helped to create a new cultural model of suppressed and privatised grieving which deeply constrained the next two generations. Emotional and expressive grieving became less common, mourning ritual was minimised and…

The risk assessment of bereavement in a palliative care setting.

An effective bereavement risk assessment document used in a palliative care setting was identified which could ensure bereavement support for those in need, be it a family or carer group. The nursing team were used as assessors with a system to indicate carers' and relatives' immediate need following the death of a patient. The aim of this bereavement risk assessment system was to lessen the possible long-term effects of unresolved grief for family and carers of patients who died within a hospice setting. The assessment document is a useful education tool for nurses, allied support professiona…

Meeting the needs of parents after a stillbirth or neonatal death.

The death of a child around the time of birth is one of the most profoundly distressing events any parent will experience. These deaths are not uncommon, but are often hidden, along with the grief of mothers, fathers and families. Social stigma and negative attitudes are inextricably linked to underreporting of babies’ deaths in low- and middle-income countries. A failure to recognise the value of these lost lives leads to disenfranchised grief and diminished preventive efforts to reduce stillbirth and neonatal deaths. Acknowledging these deaths to bring them ‘out of the shadows’17 and compass…

A preventive program for bereaved families.

The bereaved are a population at high risk for the development of subsequent emotional and physical illness. This paper describes a preventive program for families of cardiovascular surgery and oncology patients facing possible or inevitable death. The purpose of the program is prevention or redlction of the negative consequences of unresolved grief. The social worker's prior relationship with the family is used to provide advance preparation for possible or anticipated death, immediate intervention at the time a death occurs, preparation for the course of the normal grief reaction, and outpat…

The brain oxytocin and corticotropin-releasing factor systems in grieving mothers: What we know and what we need to learn.

The bond between a mother and her child is the strongest bond in nature. Consequently, the loss of a child is one of the most stressful and traumatic life events that causes Prolonged Grief Disorder in up to 94 % of bereaved parents. While both parents are affected, mothers are of higher risk to develop mental health complications; yet, very little research has been done to understand the impact of the loss of a child, stillbirth and pregnancy loss on key neurobiological systems. The emotional impact of losing a child, e.g., Prolonged Grief Disorder, is likely accompanied by dysregulations in …

Narrative review of cancer bereavement care before loss.

Contrary to sudden death, cancer death allows families to have a certain period to be ready for death and receive some support from health care providers. This review aims to picture a family's experience of cancer trajectory that is associated with bereavement outcomes and health care provider's care provided before loss. We reviewed pre-loss factors associated with grief and indicated that preparedness for death may contribute to alleviating grief. Simultaneously, families are afraid of confronting bereavement and under pressure to prepare for death by making decisions about death-related tr…

The impact of relationship type and closeness on mental health following suicide loss.

BACKGROUND: Most research investigating the effect of suicide on loss survivors has been limited to first-degree family members. Few studies examine the impact of suicide on others outside the immediate family and the influence of relationship type and closeness on mental health. METHODS: This study used data from a sample obtained through random digit dialing (n = 805) to assess exposure to suicide loss, relationship types, perceived closeness, and mental health symptoms (prolonged grief, depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder). RESULTS: Familial status, friend status, and h…

Bereavement outcomes among spousal hospice caregivers: Relief, rumination, and perceived patient suffering.

Witnessing end-of-life suffering of loved ones is an underappreciated stressor that may affect caregiver bereavement. We interviewed 61 spousal caregivers of hospice patients who died within the past 6-18 months. Higher rumination about suffering and lower feelings of relief was related to poorer well-being. Rumination by caregivers about end-of-life suffering was an important predictor of depression and complicated grief. Most caregivers viewed the death as at least in part a relief. One important focus of grief support may be to help caregivers find productive ways to avoid rumination and us…

Personal reminiscence styles and adaptation to bereavement: how meaning mediates their relationship.

OBJECTIVES: Personal reminiscence styles are known to influence a person's well-being, but research regarding their impact on bereavement outcomes is limited. Based on previous findings, we assumed ruminative and reflective reminiscence styles to be associated with feelings of grief and personal growth, and that meaning-making efforts and the degree of having meaning-made of losing a loved one potentially mediate these relationships. METHODS: The final study sample consisted of 198 participants aged between18 and 75 years (Mage = 40.58, SD = 39.0), 83.3% were female. In a first step, we ran s…

Supporting the family after the death of a child.

The death of a child can have a devastating effect on the family. The pediatrician has an important role to play in supporting the parents and any siblings still in his or her practice after such a death. Pediatricians may be poorly prepared to provide this support. Also, because of the pain of confronting the grief of family members, they may be reluctant to become involved. This statement gives guidelines to help the pediatrician provide such support. It describes the grief reactions that can be expected in family members after the death of a child. Ways of supporting family members are sugg…

A Fire and Altadena: Biographical Diffraction and Climate Disaster Loss.

This paper develops a conceptualization of biographical diffraction via a creative autoethnography of climate disaster grief. In January 2025, the Eaton Fire devastated Altadena, California killing 19 people and destroying over 9,000 structures. Among them was my family home. Having lived abroad in Aotearoa New Zealand for 5 years, I return to Altadena after the fire, navigating loss from sites of distance and proximity. Drawing upon Barad's concept of diffraction and the void, I grapple with the asymmetries of grief, privilege, belonging, and self that emerge with the loss of "home." To do so…
