Pepsinogen C gene product is a possible growth factor during gastric mucosal healing.

We isolated, by the subtraction cloning method, a pepsinogen C (PGC) gene fragment (the sequence between the 968th and 1179th base pairs) from a rat gastric mucosal cDNA library as a cDNA clone encoding a substance that promotes growth of the normal rat gastric mucosal cell line RGM1. Northern blot analysis revealed that PGC gene expression was enhanced not only in acetic acid-induced chronic gastric ulcers but also in indomethacin-induced gastric mucosal lesions. PGC gene expression was also increased in the Helicobacter felis-infected stomachs. Thus, the PGC gene may play a role in gastric e

Longitudinal Analysis of Substance Use as a Predictor PrEP Use and Adherence Among Young Transgender Women and Nonbinary Individuals.

Previous research on the influence of substance use on PrEP uptake and adherence among transgender women has either relied on cross-sectional analyses or on combined samples of cisgender men who have sex with men and a much smaller subsample of transgender women. To the best of our knowledge, no longitudinal study has examined the relationship of substance use and PrEP use/adherence among young transgender women and nonbinary people assigned male at birth (TNBY). We sought to understand whether substance use (i.e., binge drinking, marijuana use, and illicit drug use) predicts PrEP uptake and a

Intrauterine cannabis exposure affects fetal growth trajectories: the Generation R Study.

OBJECTIVE: Cannabis is the most commonly consumed illicit drug among pregnant women. Intrauterine exposure to cannabis may result in risks for the developing fetus. The importance of intrauterine growth on subsequent psychological and behavioral child development has been demonstrated. This study examined the relation between maternal cannabis use and fetal growth until birth in a population-based sample. METHOD: Approximately 7,452 mothers enrolled during pregnancy and provided information on substance use and fetal growth. Fetal growth was determined using ultrasound measures in early, mid-

The effects of exogenous growth factors on matrix metalloproteinase secretion by human brain tumour cells.

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a growing family of zinc-dependent endopeptidases that are capable of degrading various components of the extracellular matrix. These enzymes have been implicated in a variety of physiological and pathological conditions including embryogenesis and tumour invasion. The synthesis of many MMPs is thought to be regulated by growth factors, cytokines and hormones. In this study, we investigated the effects of five exogenous growth factors known to be expressed by gliomas [epidermal growth factor (EGF), basic growth factor (bFGF), transforming growth factor beta

Racial and ethnic differences in behavioral health, criminal legal system involvement, and service needs among mental health court participants: Implications for service delivery.

Mental Health Courts (MHCs), an alternative to incarceration, aim to address behavioral health, social needs, and criminal recidivism and serve many adults with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorder (COD). Despite the growth in MHCs, little research has examined ethnic/racial differences in behavioral health and service needs of individuals with COD. This study used data from behavioral health and social assessments administered to 146 adults with COD entering a Massachusetts MHC. Multivariate linear and logistic regression controlling for key demographics tested differences be

The effects of prenatal alcohol use on the growth of children at three years of age.

In this prospective study of substance use during pregnancy, women were interviewed in their 4th and 7th prenatal months, and women and children were assessed at 24 hr, 8, 18, and 36 months postpartum. Data are presented on the outcome of 519 children at age 3. At 3 years, children who were exposed prenatally to alcohol were smaller in weight, length, and head circumference. They also had an increased number of minor physical anomalies. These effects were found even after controlling for nutritional and environmental factors. The persistence of growth effects at age 3 suggests that children ex

Excretion profile of corticosteroids in bovine urine compared with tissue residues after therapeutic and growth-promoting administration of dexamethasone.

The illicit use of dexamethasone as growth-promoting agent in animal breeding is still practiced within the EU constituting a health risk for meat consumers. An experimental study was developed to assess dexamethasone urinary excretion and tissue distribution (liver, kidney, and muscle) in male calves after therapeutic and growth-promoting administration. Urine and tissue samples collected from treated and untreated bovines were also investigated for the presence of other natural and synthetic corticosteroids (prednisolone, prednisone, hydrocortisone, and cortisone), in order to study a possib

Yin and Yang of PDGF-mediated signaling pathway in the context of HIV infection and drug abuse.

The control and eradication of neurological complications associated with AIDS continues to be an important goal in efforts toward improving the well being of HIV-infected patients. Although combined antiretroviral therapies have contributed significantly to increasing the longevity of patients by suppressing the virus burden in the systemic compartments, the prevalence of HIV-associated neurological disorders continues to be on the rise. This in turn, leads to an impaired quality of life of the infected individuals who continue to suffer from mild to moderate cognitive decline and memory loss

Pathogenesis of progressive adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Platelet activation and vascular biology in immature vertebrae: an alternative molecular hypothesis.

Altered paraspinal muscle activity was suggested by Lowe et al (2002) to explain a relationship between Cobb angle changes and platelet calmodulin level changes in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). We formulate an alternative platelet-skeletal hypothesis which involves: (1) a small scoliosis curve; (2) axial loads transmitted directly from the intervertebral discs to vertebral body growth plates (endplate physes) as axial inward bulges that create mechanical micro-insults; (3) the latter cause dilatation of juxta-physeal vessels and, in deforming vertebrae, vascular damage with exposure o

Postnatal growth of the carotid body.

The size of the carotid body (CB) is increased significantly during the postnatal period. Type I cells in the CB are the chemoreceptive element and possess many neuron-like characteristics. In contrast to previous opinions that the number of type I cells is determined before birth, we have found that type I cells continue to proliferate over a period of at least 1 month after birth in rats. The proliferation of type I cells is influenced by oxygen concentration in ambient air. Specifically, hyperoxia inhibits the type I cell proliferation, resulting in small CBs throughout life and the permane

The role of growth factors and ammonia in the genesis of hypokalemic nephropathy.

Hypokalemia is a common electrolyte abnormality encountered in clinical practice. It can be identified in an asymptomatic patient undergoing routine electrolyte screening or can manifest itself as part of a number of functional abnormalities in a variety of organs and systems. Among the most commonly recognized complications are profound effects on the cardiovascular and neuromuscular systems, together with abnormalities in acid-base regulation. In humans, hypokalemia contributes to the development of hypertension and predisposes patients to a variety of ventricular arrhythmias, including vent

Immortalized human corneal epithelial cells for ocular toxicity and inflammation studies.

PURPOSE: To develop a metabolically competent, human immortalized corneal epithelial cell line for use in toxicity and inflammation studies. METHODS: Primary corneal epithelial cells (P-CEPI) were immortalized by a recombinant simian virus (SV)40 T antigen retroviral vector defective for viral replication. The cells were grown in serum-free medium with the addition of bovine pituitary extract, cloned at passage 15 and one of the best-growing clones, CEPI-17-CL4, was extensively characterized for differentiation and metabolic characteristics of the human corneal epithelium. Methods used were i

Embryonic implantation.

Embryo implantation is a progressive process which requires a communication between two different organisms, and consists of three consecutive phases: apposition, adhesion and invasion. It must be realized throughout the period called "window of implantation", which is characterized by morphological and biochemical changes in the endometrium, as the plasma membrane transformation and the presence of some specific adhesion molecules, chemokines, cytokines, growth factors, and invasive proteinases. All of then acting in a paracrine/autocrine manner, and drive by endocrine hormones.

Tumor progression, early diagnosis and prognosis of melanoma.

Primary melanomas evolve from melanocytes or from precursor lesions through two stages: the radial and vertical growth phases. The radial growth phase may be in situ or microinvasive, but is a non-tumorigenic neoplastic process, while the vertical growth phase is tumorigenic. The prognosis in radial growth phase is excellent irrespective of thickness or other variables. Curable radial growth phase melanomas can be recognized by surveillance of patients identified by screening for risk markers which include dysplastic nevi, common nevi, freckles, and other indicators of chronic or acute sun exp

[Vitreoretinal proliferation. II. Pathogenic hypotheses].

The pathogenesis of proliferative vitreoretinopathy remains poorly understood and a large variety of hypotheses have been developed in an attempt to investigate cellular proliferations that follow rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Several growth promoting factors have been identified within the vitreous body and proliferative membranes from patients with PVR. Their enzymatic, chemotactic, mitogenic or proinflammatory properties make them good candidates, either alone or more probably in a synergistic manner. They may be involved at different levels in the successive stages of PVR, cell migrat

Cell growth regulation in epithelial ovarian cancer.

BACKGROUND: As in the case of other epithelial neoplasms, most ovarian cancers arise from single clones of cells that have undergone multiple genetic alterations. A comparison of normal and malignant ovarian epithelium has identified several differences in growth regulation by peptide growth factors, protooncogenes, and tumor suppressor genes. METHODS: Recent articles and abstracts have been reviewed. RESULTS: The malignant ovarian epithelial phenotype has been associated with (1) autocrine growth stimulation by transforming growth factor-alpha, (2) loss of autocrine growth inhibition by tra
