BACKGROUND: Gynecomastia is a benign enlargement of the male breast. Yet enlarged breasts cause anxiety, embarrassment, psychosocial discomfort, and fear of breast cancer. The aim of this study was to assess the experience of gynecomastia patients undergoing mastectomy and liposuction surgery.
METHODS: Seven hundred thirty-three patients were analyzed for age, chief complaint, position, grade, operation approach, biopsy, and complication between mastectomy group and liposuction group, from 1990 to 2010.

Most cases of male prepubertal gynecomastia are classified as idiopathic. We investigated possible causes of gynecomastia in three prepubertal boys who were otherwise healthy and had normal serum concentrations of endogenous steroids. In all three boys, gynecomastia coincided with the topical application of products that contained lavender and tea tree oils. Gynecomastia is defined as excessive development of the breast in boys. It is common in neonates and adolescents. Although in most cases this is a transient phenomenon, it might lead to significant social impediments such as decreased participation in physical education because of embarrassment. Eighty-one patients with advanced testicular cancer were evaluated for gynecomastia or severe breast tenderness at diagnosis and after platinum-based chemotherapy. The prognostic significance of gynecomastia in these two settings was explored. At presentation, 10% (8 patients) had gynecomastia or breast tenderness and elevated HCG levels. Report on the successful treatment of pubertal gynecomastia with the synthetic steroid preparation Danazol. In 15 male adolescents, 11 to 18 years old, Danazol in an average dose of 8 to 10 mg/kg/day, administered orally over 2 to 3 months, achieved a very good or good reduction of breast tissue. 4 patients showed a palpable but insufficient regression. Side-effects of the treatment were rare and clinically negligible. The mechanism of the hormonal action of the gonadotropin inhibiting steroid Danazol in gynecomastia cannot be explained by the hormone findings available so far.
