On the relevance of cocaine detection in a fingerprint.

The finding that drugs and metabolites can be detected from fingerprints is of potential relevance to forensic science and as well as toxicology and clinical testing. However, discriminating between dermal contact and ingestion of drugs has never been verified experimentally. The inability to interpret the result of finding a drug or metabolite in a fingerprint has prevented widespread adoption of fingerprints in drug testing and limits the probative value of detecting drugs in fingermarks. A commonly held belief is that the detection of metabolites of drugs of abuse in fingerprints can be use

Prevalence and Risk Factors for Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) Infections in Custodial Populations: A Systematic Review.

UNLABELLED: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in prisons can result in serious morbidity and death. We reviewed rates and risk factors for MRSA infection in custody, searching Medline, EMBASE, and CINAHL databases. Between 1997 and 2015, 17 studies reported MRSA skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs), with four case reports of MRSA non-SSTI (necrotizing pneumonias, brain abscess, and epiduritis). Significant associations with MRSA SSTI were found: MRSA colonization, previous skin infection, sharing soap or personal items, SSTI presenting as an abscess or furuncle, younger age

Prevalence and predictors of intestinal parasites among food handlers in Yebu Town, southwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: As a result of urbanization, eating and drinking from food service establishments is becoming a common practice in developing countries like Ethiopia, which increases the chances of food borne diseases. The health status and hygiene practices of food handlers are the major determinants of food contamination. In developing countries where there are poor regulatory systems for food hygiene, food handlers are often appointed without screening for possible infections associated with poor hygiene like intestinal parasites. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed at determining the prevalence and p

A probabilistic risk assessment of Cryptosporidium exposure among Baltimore urban anglers.

In some urban settings, recreational fishing in industrialized waterways may pose a substantial health risk due to the presence of pathogenic microbes such as Cryptosporidium, a pathogen that produces a moderate to fatal gastrointestinal illness in humans. This pilot study examined the risk of exposure to Cryptosporidium based on fish samples and hand wash samples taken from urban anglers. Information regarding fishing frequency and consumption were also collected through an interview questionnaire to further characterize this risk. There were a total of 56 anglers interviewed and 46 fish and

Procedures for preventing the transmission of foot-and-mouth disease virus to pigs and sheep by personnel in contact with infected pigs.

The most effective method of containing an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is by the culling of livestock. However, qualified people must diagnose the disease before the culling can begin, and they must avoid susceptible animals after having been in contact with infected premises, to prevent them from transmitting the virus. To test the effectiveness of biosecurity procedures in preventing the transmission of FMD virus (O/UK/35/2001) investigators contacted and sampled pigs inoculated with FMD virus for approximately 45 minutes and then contacted and sampled sentinel pigs and sheep af

House dust levels of selected insecticides and a herbicide measured by the EL and LWW samplers and comparisons to hand rinses and urine metabolites.

During the Minnesota Children's Pesticide Exposure Study (MNCPES), comparisons were made between the insecticide/herbicide loadings obtained with two household dust/insecticide or herbicide samplers: the Edwards and Lioy (EL) press sampler (used for dust collection from carpets or other surfaces) and the Lioy, Waimnan and Weisel (LWW) surface wipe sampler. The results were compared with hand rinse levels, and urine metabolite levels obtained from 102 children (ages 3-13). All measurements were made during a 1-week sampling period, and information was obtained on household pesticide use and eac

Reactivity and repeatability of hygiene behaviour: structured observations from Burkina Faso.

If interventions promoting improved hygiene behaviour to prevent childhood diarrhoea are to be implemented and evaluated, valid methods for measuring this behaviour will be required. This paper presents findings from a study to investigate the use of structured observations to measure hygiene behaviour in Burkina Faso. Two hundred mothers with young children (2-36 months) were observed on several occasions, with particular attention focused on events/behaviour surrounding defaecation. Child defaecation occurred most often in a potty (67% of occasions). Stools were most often disposed of into a

Rituals in infection control: what works in the newborn nursery?

Two infection control practices common in the newborn nursery, handwashing and gowning, are compared with regards to historic origins, effectiveness, and extent of practice. The practice of handwashing is the direct result of efforts to prevent puerperal sepsis and has been shown to be effective in reducing neonatal risk of infection. Gowning has evolved from operating room practices and has been shown to be generally ineffective in reducing risk of infant infection. Nevertheless, gowning is practiced extensively and handwashing is often omitted. Such rituals need occasional reexamination so t

Outbreak of Shigella sonnei in a clinical microbiology laboratory.

Laboratory technologists (22%) developed infections with Shigella sonnei. The isolates had the same antibiogram and pulse-field gel electrophoresis pattern as an unknown isolate handled by a laboratory student. Covering faucet handles with paper towels during hand washing in the laboratory was protective. No further cases occurred after the laboratory was cleaned with a phenolic agent and a handle-free faucet was installed.

Increased occurrence of hand eczema in young children following the Danish hand hygiene recommendations during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: During the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic of Spring 2020, Denmark was one of the first countries to introduce lockdown measures, including closing of all daycare centers. Following the reopening of daycare centers, Danish Health Authorities implemented a mandatory intensive hand hygiene regimen. OBJECTIVES: To examine the occurrence and point prevalence of hand eczema as a consequence of more intensive hand hygiene among Danish children attending daycare. METHODS: The heads of 1667 daycare centers in Denmark were contacted and asked to forward a link to a questionnaire to pa

Trend of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteremia in an institution with a high rate of MRSA after the reinforcement of antibiotic stewardship and hand hygiene.

BACKGROUND: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections are a concern across the worldwide. METHODS: Antibiotic stewardship and hand hygiene programs were reinforced in a 2,000-bed tertiary hospital in South Korea where the methicillin resistance rate of Staphylococcus aureus is about 65%. The computerized prescription restriction was implemented in August 2008. "Hand hygiene program," consistent with World Health Organization guideline, was reinforced in December 2008. We assessed the effect of the infection control programs on the incidence of MRSA bloodstream infection (B

Molecular epidemiology of gram-negative bacilli from infected neonates and health care workers' hands in neonatal intensive care units.

We sought to characterize the molecular epidemiology of gram-negative bacilli (GNB) causing infections in infants and associated with carriage on nurses' hands after hand hygiene was performed. From March 2001 to January 2003, GNB caused 192 (34%) of 562 hospital-acquired infections in the 2 participating neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) and were isolated from the hands of 45 (38%) of 119 nurses. Five species--Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia marcescens and Enterobacter cloacae, all of which were typed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis--caused 16

Failure of bland soap handwash to prevent hand transfer of patient bacteria to urethral catheters.

OBJECTIVE: The study was designed to compare the efficacies of bland soap handwash and isopropyl alcohol hand rinse in preventing transfer of aerobic gram-negative bacilli to urinary catheters via transient hand colonization acquired from direct patient contact. Glove juice recovery of gram-negative bacteria was considered transient colonization; catheter recovery was considered transfer colonization. DESIGN: The contact source for gram-negative bacteria was a single "high burden" groin skin carrier (greater than or equal to 10(4)/ml cup scrub fluid). Using a two-period cross-over design, 6 h

Dr. Ignaz Phillip Semmelweis: The Unrecognized Pioneer of Aseptic Practices.

Modern medicine is well-versed in aseptic and infection control practices, such as hand hygiene, proper use of disinfectants, and personal protective equipment. The early 1800s lacked any concept of effective antisepsis because they predominantly believed in the miasma theory (now abandoned), which believed that disease was caused by bad air coming out of rotting organic matter. In the era of "miasma theory," Ignaz Semmelweis dared to pave the way for germ theory disease. Vienna General Hospital supported his work, but his hypothesis remained unpublished and unheard by the rest of the world. I
