The aim of this study was to investigate the fasciculation potentials (FPs) in the small-peripheral muscles of the foot and hand and the possible associated factors, in a healthy population. One hundred-twenty-two normal individuals (65 men and 57 women), aged 17-67 years (mean 39.96, SD=12.76) participated in the study. A special questionnaire consisting of 47 questions was devised as the basic instrument of the interview, which included the Hamilton anxiety rating scale. The extensor digitorum brevis (EDB), the flexor hallucis brevis (FHB) and the first dorsal interosseous (FDI) muscles were

We report on three children with de novo terminal deletions of the long arm of chromosome 11 (11q-) and breakpoints in 11q23-q24. Eighty-nine other patients with partial monosomy 11q have been reported and were reviewed by us. Salient features of 11q- syndrome are psychomotor retardation, trigonocephaly, telecanthus/hypertelorism, broad depressed nasal bridge, micrognathia, low set abnormal ears, cardiac anomalies and hand/foot anomalies. Renal agenesis and anal atresia are reported first here. Supratentorial white matter abnormality on CT and MRI present in our second patient was reported in

BACKGROUND: Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is endemic in Malaysia. In 1997, a large outbreak of enterovirus 71 (EV-71) associated HFMD resulted in 41 deaths due to severe left ventricular dysfunction and central nervous system infection with extensive damage to the medulla and pons. The clinical presentation in all these patients were rapid cardio-respiratory decompensation leading to cardiac arrest. Another large outbreak of HFMD with 55 fatal cases and a similar clinical picture was reported in Taiwan in 1998. In 2000, an outbreak of HFMD resulted in the deaths of three children who ha

INTRODUCTION: Larsen syndrome is characterised by untreatable congenital dislocation of multiple body joints, along with marked foot deformities. These patients have a flattened face with a short nose, a broad depressed nasal bridge and a prominent forehead. In this clinical note our aim is to report two cases that coursed with spinal cord compromise.
CASE REPORTS: Case 1: an 18-month-old female with congenital dislocation of knees and hips. The patient had a flat face, sunken root of nose, and carp mouth. Magnetic resonance imaging of the spine showed severe cervical kyphosis secondary to ma

In this work the authors describe two cases of Coffin-Lowry syndrome, diagnosed in two brothers of different age and with a different degree of evolution of the illness. The brothers present the mitral prolapse association. The clinic and instrumental examination have been executed. The various pathogenetic hypothesis have been discussed and the authors propose the most recent that considers the fibroblast incapable to produce the substances of connective matrix. This hypothesis explain also the evolution and the progression of the lesion at the interested organs (skin, joints, bones, heart).

A 54-year-old woman began to notice numbness and motor weakness in the lower extremities in July 1999. These symptoms rapidly progressed and she could not walk any more. When she admitted to our hospital, she showed peripherally dominant, moderate motor weakness, drop foot and loss of superficial and deep sensation in the lower extremities, but only slight weakness in the hands. Cranial nerves were intact. Deep tendon reflexes were all absent. Nerve conduction velocities were reduced and cerebrospinal fluid protein was elevated. VEGF was greatly increased in serum (1,850 pg/ml), which has been

Primary care providers frequently care for complaints of the hands and feet. Here, the author describes the typical presentations of hand osteoarthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, ganglion cysts, plantar fasciitis, onychomycosis, and Morton neuroma. Useful physical examination techniques are described. The history and physical examination are usually sufficient to diagnose these conditions without the need for more advanced testing. All of these conditions have evidence-based therapy that can be initiated by the primary care provider. These treatments as well as reasons to refer to a specialist

In the present study whole-exome sequencing using the Complete Genomics platform was employed to scan a proband from a split‑hand/split‑foot malformation (SHFM) 4 family. The missense mutation c.728G>A (p.Arg243Gln) in the TP63 gene was revealed to be associated with SHFM. Sanger sequencing confirmed the sequences of the proband and his father. The father was diagnosed with SHFM and harbored a CGG‑to‑CAG mutation in exon 5, which produced a R243Q substitution in the zinc binding site and dimerization site of TP63. The R243Q mutation was predicted to be pathogenic by PolyPhen‑2. The proband, wh

PURPOSE: Sorafenib-induced Hand-Foot Skin Reaction (HFSR) significantly impairs patient quality of life, yet its underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study investigates the pivotal role of Epiregulin (EREG), an Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) ligand, in driving keratinocyte hyperproliferation and the pathogenesis of HFSR.
METHODS: The authors established a murine HFSR model using oral sorafenib (100 mg/kg) and analyzed paw tissues for histopathological changes (H&E staining) and EREG expression (immunohistochemistry). In vitro, HaCaT keratinocytes were treated with sor

Hand-foot skin reaction (HFSR) is a specific but uncommon cutaneous side effect mainly following chemotherapeutic drugs such as multitargeted kinase inhibitors. HFSR is reversible and non-life-threatening. HFSR, also known as palmoplantar erythrodysesthesia, presents with various degrees of erythema, edema, hyperkeratosis, blister, and sometimes with a fine white scale. Dolutegravir, a first next-generation integrase inhibitor, is used with other antiretroviral therapy (ART) to treat mainly HIV infections. HFSR is diagnosed depending on the suggestive association of drug intake and characteris

BACKGROUND: Cold hypersensitivity in the hands and feet (CHHF) is a common symptom in Korea and patients with CHHF complain of coldness in the hands and feet in an environment that is not considered cold by unaffected people. In traditional East Asian medicine, CHHF is believed to be accompanied by various diseases and symptoms, and is considered a symptom that needs active treatment. CHHF is used for pattern identification in the cold pattern, yang deficiency, and constitution. This study aimed to examine the differences in frequencies of chronic diseases with respect to the presence of CHHF.

In 1998, Pierpont et al. reported on two unrelated boys with plantar lipomatosis, unusual facial phenotype, and developmental delay as a possible new MR/MCA syndrome. Here we report on a 2-year-old boy with similar manifestations: axial hypotonia in the first few months, prolonged feeding problems, moderate developmental delay, no speech development, deep palmar and plantar grooves, fat pads at the anteromedial aspect of the heels, and a distinct facial phenotype (high forehead, high anterior hairline, mild midfacial hypoplasia, remarkably narrow and upward slanted palpebral fissures, broad na

Proteus syndrome is a rare, sporadic genetic disorder characterized by overgrowth of multiple different tissues in a mosaic pattern. It is associated with connective tissue nevi, epidermal nevi, disproportionate overgrowth of multiple tissues, vascular malformations, characteristic tumors, and specific facial anomalies. Joseph Merrick, popularly known as the Elephant Man, is now believed to have suffered from Proteus syndrome. A case of Proteus syndrome and associated findings on bone scintigraphy are presented.
