The Caregiver Burden of Helmet Therapy following Endoscopic Strip Craniectomy: A Phenomenological Qualitative Study.

INTRODUCTION: This cohort study aimed to elucidate the caregiver burden of helmet therapy (HT), following endoscopic strip craniectomy (ESC) to treat craniosynostosis, in an effort to inform clinicians and future caregivers navigating this therapeutic option. METHODS: Fourteen caregivers of children with positional plagiocephaly (6) and craniosynostosis treated by ESC (8) undergoing HT at a single center were recruited via convenience sampling. Using a phenomenological qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted to understand the experience of HT for caregivers. Data colle

CNS and Thorax Injury and Associated Risks Factors in Equestrian Sports.

CONTEXT: Equestrian sports continue to gain popularity in the United States and are associated with a high injury rate, especially involving the central nervous system and thorax. Due to this high rate of injury and the potential for long-term consequences associated with participation, an understanding of the unique risks of this sport is needed. OBJECTIVE: To describe severe injury in equestrian sports and review the role that protective gear plays in injury mitigation. DATA SOURCES: The PubMed Database was searched using the search terms "equestrian" and "horse" combined with "spinal cord

Patterns of maxillofacial trauma in helmet vs. non helmet wearing two wheeler drivers in a tertiary care center.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The frequency and patterns of maxillofacial fractures vary by country, based on demographic, socioeconomic, cultural and environmental factors. Wearing a helmet is an efficient form of head protection for two-wheeler drivers and is now required in the vast majority of countries. The aim of this study was to compare the patterns of maxillofacial trauma in patients who wore helmets and those who did not. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The data were gathered from clinical records of patients presenting with maxillofacial trauma between January 2019 and February 2022. The inclusion crite

Prevalence and factors associated with effective helmet use among motorcyclists in Mysuru City of Southern India.

BACKGROUND: Helmet use reduces the risk and severity of head injury and death due to road traffic crash among motorcyclists. The protective efficacy of different types of helmets varies. Wearing firmly fastened full-face helmet termed as effective helmet use provides greatest protection. This study estimates the prevalence and factors associated with effective helmet use among motorcyclists in Mysuru, a tier II city in Southern India. METHODS: Cross-sectional road side observational study of 3499 motorcyclists (2134 motorcycle riders and 1365 pillion riders) at four traffic intersections was

Impact Performance Comparison of Advanced Bicycle Helmets with Dedicated Rotation-Damping Systems.

Bicycle helmets effectively mitigate skull fractures, but there is increasing concern on their effectiveness in mitigating traumatic brain injury (TBI) caused by rotational head acceleration. Bicycle falls typically involve oblique impacts that induce rotational head acceleration. Recently, bicycle helmet with dedicated rotation-damping systems have been introduced to mitigate rotational head acceleration. This study investigated the impact performance of four helmets with different rotation-damping systems in comparison to a standard bicycle helmet without a rotation-damping system. Impact pe

Federally mandating motorcycle helmets in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Motorcycle helmets reduce both motorcycle-related fatalities and head injuries. Motorcycle crashes are a major public health concern which place economic stress on the U.S. healthcare system. DISCUSSION: Although statewide universal motorcycle helmet laws effectively increase helmet use, most state helmet laws do not require every motorcycle rider to wear a helmet. Herein, we propose and outline the solution of implementing federal motorcycle helmet law, while addressing potential counterarguments. CONCLUSIONS: The decision to ride a motorcycle without a helmet has consequences t

Observational study of compliance with Queensland bicycle helmet laws.

Mandatory bicycle helmet laws have been found to increase helmet wearing rates in Australia and internationally. However, much of the research on factors influencing compliance with the Australian helmet laws is dated or focuses on commuters and city areas only. To address this gap, video recordings of bicycle riders were undertaken at 17 sites across Queensland, Australia, representing a mixture of on- and off-road locations, speed limits and regions. Helmet status was able to be determined for 98% of riders observed. The level of compliance with the laws was very high, with 98.3% of the more

Efficacy of passive helmet therapy for deformational plagiocephaly: report of 1050 cases.

OBJECT: There has been a tremendous increase in the incidence of deformational plagiocephaly in children throughout the world. Therapeutic options include observation, active counterpositioning, external orthotics, and surgery. The current treatment in the US is highly debated, but it typically includes external orthotic helmets in patients with moderate to severe plagiocephaly presenting between 4 and 10 months of age or in children with significant comorbidities limiting passive (no-pressure) therapy. The present study was designed to evaluate 3 key issues: 1) the accuracy of the Argenta cla

An unusual autopsy case of incomplete decapitation of a motorcyclist with herniation of thoracic organs through a helmet-related neck wound.

The authors report an unusual autopsy case of a motorcyclist who wore a full-face type helmet and had incomplete decapitation and herniation of the heart and a portion of the right lung through an extensive lacerate wound on the front of the neck after his motorcycle crashed. The authors identified 2 main offensive dynamics that occurred simultaneously: First, partial decapitation with a extensive gaping wound on the neck caused by the chin strap after a violent angular movement of the head; second, the translocation of the abdominal organs into the thorax and the herniation of the thoracic or

Effect of molding helmet on head shape in nonsurgically treated sagittal craniosynostosis.

OBJECT: Sagittal craniosynostosis is traditionally considered to be a surgical condition. Poor results of simple suturectomy follow from early reclosure of the suture. A wider craniectomy or use of interposing materials has not improved the outcome. However, endoscopic suturectomy supplemented with postoperative use of a molding helmet has shown good results. Because suturectomy reunites within 8-12 weeks of surgery, the authors questioned if the improved outcome was primarily related to use of the helmet. METHODS: In 4 patients whose families opted for calvarial reconstruction when the infan

Motorcycle helmet laws in the United States from 1990 to 2005: politics and public health.

The passage of universal helmet legislation requiring motorcycle riders of all ages to wear helmets is a timely and controversial issue with far-reaching public health implications, especially as the number of motorcycle fatalities continues to rise. In 2008, only 20 states had a universal helmet policy, an effective safety measure for reducing motorcycle fatalities and serious injuries. We used state-specific longitudinal data for the continental United States from 1990 through 2005 to determine which industry, political, economic, and demographic factors had a significant influence on the en

Analysis of fatal injuries to motorcyclists by helmet type.

To clarify the characteristics of injuries of motorcyclists dying in accidents in relation to helmet type, we retrospectively analyzed forensic autopsies of 36 helmeted motorcycle riders. The presence of major injuries and injury severity were evaluated with the injury severity score and the 1990 revision of the Abbreviated Injury Scale. Persons with open-face helmets (19 cases) were significantly more likely to have sustained severe head and neck injuries, especially brain contusions, than were persons with full-face helmets (17 cases). Furthermore, major injuries of the chest or abdomen, rib

Clinical classification of positional plagiocephaly.

Positional plagiocephaly deformities have increased dramatically in all craniofacial clinics in the United States. There are multiple methods for evaluating the degree of deformity, all of which are expensive, time consuming, and have poor reproducibility. We present a clinical classification of plagiocephaly deformities that we have employed since 1998. The classification allows us to quantitate the degree of deformity in these children at any given time, to reliably determine quantitative changes from evaluation to evaluation. The technique is highly reproducible, cost effective and readily
