Normative trajectories of R 1 , R 2 *, and magnetic susceptibility in basal ganglia on healthy ageing.

Quantitative MRI (qMRI) techniques, including R1, R2*, and magnetic susceptibility mapping, have emerged as promising tools for generating surrogate imaging markers of brain tissue microstructure, enabling non-invasive in vivo measurements associated with myelination and iron deposition. Gaining insights into how these quantitative measurements evolve throughout a normal lifespan can enhance our understanding of brain maturation processes and facilitate studies of disease-related microstructural changes by distinguishing pathological alterations from normal brain development. In this study, we

"Urological age" as a proxy of healthy longevity: analysis of prospective population-based cohorts in U.S. and China.

BACKGROUND: Assessing urinary symptoms poses a complex challenge for primary care practitioners. In evaluating urological function, authors' approach involves constructing an urological age through the analysis of laboratory parameters and indicators of the urinary system. METHODS: Based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), urological laboratory tests and age-related symptoms were included in the development of urological age (UA) and urological age acceleration (UAA) through the Klemera Doubal method. In relation to mortality associated with UAA, the metric was c

Fundus autofluorescence lifetimes in age-related macular degeneration versus healthy controls in a pseudophakic population.

PURPOSE: To check whether prolonged fundus autofluorescence (FAF) lifetimes in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) could be an artefact resulting from lens fluorescence. METHODS: Fluorescence lifetime imaging ophthalmoscopy (FLIO) was performed in pseudophakic intermediate AMD as well as healthy controls. The median values of FAF lifetimes in the centre, the inner and the outer ring of the ETDRS grid, obtained as amplitude-weighted mean of the lifetimes from a three-exponential fit of the fluorescence decay over time in two spectral channels, as well as peak emission wavelengths (PEW) were

Functional and Nutritional Properties of Lion's Mane Mushrooms in Oat-Based Desserts for Dysphagia and Healthy Ageing.

Hericium erinaceus (Lion's Mane mushroom) is a medicinal species recognised for its neuroprotective and antioxidant properties. This study investigated its potential as a functional ingredient in oat milk-based desserts formulated for individuals with dysphagia. Freeze-dried Lion's Mane powder (LMP), containing high-quality protein (~16%, amino acid score 88%), dietary fibre (~31%), and phenolic compounds (72.15 mg GAE/g), was incorporated at varying levels using gelatin or iota-carrageenan (IC) as gelling agents. Incorporation of up to 5% LMP significantly improved the nutritional composition

Age related grid-wise spatial analysis of choroidal parameters in well characterised healthy population.

Choroidal vascularity index (CVI) is an image-based metric applied to assess the choroid in disease but poorly explored in natural aging. In this retrospective cohort study, we assessed a single eye of 309 healthy individuals from 20 to 70 + years, and quantified spatial topography of total choroidal area (TCA), luminal area (LA), stromal area (SA) and CVI (LA: TCA) in cluster and standard retinal templates using a semi-automated approach. CVI was found to be greatest in the central vs. periphery (CVIcentral 67.08% [66.85-67.73] vs. CVIperiphery65.68% [65.32-66.01], p < 0.01). In this study, C

Healthy lifestyle interventions within the curriculum in school-age children: systematic review and meta-analysis.

Childhood obesity is a major public health challenge. Previous research has identified the impact of school-based interventions for preventing and treating obesity; we hypothesized that when curricular changes are integrated, results could be exponentiated. This study aimed to systematically review and conduct a meta-analysis of the published literature analyzing information about school-based interventions inserted in the curriculum. The Cochrane Handbook methodology was followed. An electronic search was conducted in five databases, with a specific design strategy per database. Randomized co

Cannabinoids and healthy ageing: the potential for extending healthspan and lifespan in preclinical models with an emphasis on Caenorhabditis elegans.

There is a significant global upsurge in the number and proportion of older persons in the population. With this comes an increasing prevalence of age-related conditions which pose a major challenge to healthcare systems. The development of anti-ageing treatments may help meet this challenge by targeting the ageing process which is a common denominator to many health problems. Cannabis-like compounds (cannabinoids) are reported to improve quality of life and general well-being in human trials, and there is increasing preclinical research highlighting that they have anti-ageing activity. Transcriptomic analysis of mRNAs in human whole blood identified age-specific changes in healthy individuals.

Older age is one of the most important shared risk factors for multiple chronic diseases, increasing the medical burden to contemporary societies. Current research focuses on identifying aging biomarkers to predict aging trajectories and developing interventions aimed at preventing and delaying the progression of multimorbidity with aging. Here, a transcriptomic changes analysis of whole blood genes with age was conducted. The age-related whole blood gene-expression profiling datasets were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. We screened the differentially expressed gene

Standard values of the upper body posture in healthy adults with special regard to age, sex and BMI.

In order to classify and analyze the parameters of upper body posture in clinical or physiotherapeutic settings, a baseline in the form of standard values with special regard to age, sex and BMI is required. Thus, subjectively healthy men and women aged 21-60 years were measured in this project. The postural parameters of 800 symptom-free male (n = 397) and female (n = 407) volunteers aged 21-60 years (Ø♀: 39.7 ± 11.6, Ø ♂: 40.7 ± 11.5 y) were studied. The mean height of the men was 1.8 ± 0.07 m, with a mean body weight of 84.8 ± 13.1 kg and an average BMI of 26.0 ± 3.534 kg/m2. In contrast, t

Multiplexed Phosphoproteomic Study of Brain in Patients with Alzheimer's Disease and Age-Matched Cognitively Healthy Controls.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disorder caused by neuronal loss that results in cognitive and functional impairment. Formation of neurofibrillary tangles composed of abnormal hyperphosphorylation of tau protein is one of the major pathological hallmarks of AD. Importantly, several neurodegenerative disorders, including AD, are associated with abnormal protein phosphorylation events. However, little is known thus far on global protein phosphorylation changes in AD. We report a phosphoproteomics study examining the frontal gyrus of people with AD and age-matched co

Hypothetical interventions to prevent stroke: an application of the parametric g-formula to a healthy middle-aged population.

The effects of interventions on multiple lifestyle and metabolic risk factors, initiated in midlife or later in a healthy population, on the long-term risk of first-ever stroke is not known. A particular methodological challenge in observational studies is to estimate the unbiased effect of a time-varying exposure in presence of time-varying confounders, if those confounders are affected by prior exposure. In such cases, the parametric g-formula can be applied to estimate an unbiased effect. We applied the parametric g-formula to estimate the 18-years (1994-2012) cumulative stroke risk under d
