Mortality due to cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, and cancer in adults with cerebral palsy.

AIM: To compare mortality rates for cardiovascular disease, cancer, and respiratory disease between adults with cerebral palsy (CP) and the general population. METHOD: A cohort study was conducted using data from adults with CP in England, identified through a primary care data set (the Clinical Practice Research Datalink), with linked data on death registrations from the Office for National Statistics. Cause of death was categorized according to International Classification of Diseases codes. Standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) were calculated to compare mortality rates between adults with

Shared and Reciprocal Mechanisms Between Heart Failure and Cancer - An Emerging Concept of Heart-Cancer Axis.

Epidemiological evidence of increased risks of cancer in heart failure (HF) patients and HF in cancer patients has suggested close relationships between the pathogenesis of both diseases. Indeed, HF and cancer share common risk factors, including aging and unhealthy lifestyles, and underlying mechanisms, including activation of the sympathetic nervous system and renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, chronic inflammation, and clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential. Mechanistically, HF accelerates cancer development and progression via secreted factors, so-called cardiokines, and epigen

Right ventricle toxicity in cancer treatment: a focused review on cardiac imaging.

Background: The right ventricle (RV) remains the 'forgotten chamber' in the clinical assessment of cancer therapy-related cardiac dysfunction (CTRCD). Aim: We aimed to review the role that various cardiac imaging modalities play in RV assessment as part of the integrative management of patients undergoing cancer therapy. Discussion: RV assessment remains challenging by traditional 2D echocardiography. In this review we discuss other parameters such as right atrial strain, and other echocardiographic modalities such as 3D and stress echocardiography. We also elaborate on the specific role that

A rare left ventricular cardiac myxoma mimicking fibroma.

BACKGROUND: In most cases, it is not difficult to differentiate common left ventricular (LV) cardiac myxomas from fibromas because they are different disease entities and have different imaging findings. Herein, we present a case of a tumor with histological characteristics of a LV cardiac myxoma even though its imaging and macroscopical views were similar to that of fibroma. CASE PRESENTATION: A 65-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital with chest tightness and palpitations which persisted for 2 years. Transthoracic echocardiogram and transesophageal echocardiography revealed a 23 mm ×

New Onset Cardiac Murmur and Exertional Dyspnea in an Apparently Healthy Child: A Rare Localization of Obstructive Myxoma in the Right Ventricle Outflow Tract without Pulmonary Embolization-A Case Report and Literature Review.

Myxomas are slowly growing benign neoplasms which are rare in children. Up to 80% can be located in the left atrium and generate symptoms such as embolism, cardiac failure, fever and weight loss. Rarely, myxomas can be detected in the right ventricle outflow tract, causing arrhythmias, pulmonary emboli and sudden death. We report the case of a 13-year-old healthy child brought to the Emergency Department (ED) of the Children's Hospital Bambino Gesù, Rome, for recent dyspnea, chest pain on exertion and new onset cardiac murmur. Patient underwent medical examination and echocardiogram with the f

Donor-recipient age interaction and the impact on clinical results after heart transplantation.

To evaluate the impact of donor-recipient age matching on clinical outcomes after heart transplantation, a total of 509 patients (January 1990-December 2018, mean follow-up 111 ± 80 months) were stratified into 4 groups (young-R/young-D, young-R/old-D, old-R/young-D, old-R/old-D) according to the recipient (young-R < 60, old-R ≥ 60 years) and the donor (young-D < 50, old-D ≥ 50 years) age. No difference was found among 30-day mortality (P = .11) and postoperative complications between groups. Both unadjusted and adjusted survival was significantly higher for group young-R/young-D than that of

Massive pelvic recurrence of uterine leiomyomatosis with intracaval-intracardiac extension: video case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Uterine leiomyomas represent the gynecological neoplasm with the highest prevalence worldwide. This apparently benign pathological entity may permeate into the venous system causing the so-called intravenous leiomyomatosis of the uterus (IVL). IVL may seldom extend to large caliber veins and reach the right cardiac chambers or pulmonary arteries and cause signs of right sided congestive heart failure and sudden death. Due to its low incidence, however, IVL with intracardiac extension is often misdiagnosed resulting in deferred treatment. No consensus has been obtained regarding the

[Invasive thymoma extending into the superior vena cava and the right atrium: a case report and review of the literature].

If the neoplastic extension with the higher vena cava can be observed during the evolution of the invasive thymomes, the tumoral extension in the right auricle, remains on the other hand an exception. We report an invasive case of thymome to higher intracellar extension, right intraatrial and pleuropulmonary revealed by a syndrome undermines higher and a left pleurisy. The transthoracic echocardiography supplemented by the echocardiography transoesophageal pose the cardiac diagnosis of tumor, and it is the thoracic tomodensitometry which highlights a tumoral process mediastinal of malignant pa

Real-world prevalence and outcome of elevated right ventricular systolic pressure in myelofibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Myelofibrosis (MF) is a subgroup of Philadelphia chromosome-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms that are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, including pulmonary hypertension. Here we report the real-world prevalence, risk factors, and clinical outcomes of eRVSP in MF patients. METHODS: A retrospective, single-center cohort study was conducted on 208 patients with MF that were diagnosed between 2013 and 2023. Elevated right ventricular systolic pressure (eRVSP) was defined as RVSP > 35 mmHg. Major adverse cardiac events (MACE) were defined as new-onset co

New Systemic Inflammatory Indices as Predictors of Fulminant Myocarditis in Children.

Background/Objectives: Myocarditis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in children and can lead to long-term heart failure, dilated cardiomyopathy, the need for heart transplantation, or death. New systemic inflammatory indices that combine lymphocyte, neutrophil, and platelet counts have been recently used as strong prognostic markers of some inflammatory diseases and adverse outcomes of neoplasms. This study aimed to investigate the use of new systemic indices as early predictive markers for adverse outcomes in patients with pediatric myocarditis. Methods: This study retrospectively

Coronary artery bypass grafting in patients with concomitant solid tumours: early and long-term results.

OBJECTIVES: Our goal was to analyse a consecutive series of patients with solid organ tumours undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) by defining the risk factors for early and long-term outcomes. METHODS: Between 2005 and 2016, a consecutive series of 4079 patients underwent isolated CABG at our institution. Of 103 patients (2.5%) with active malignancy, we enrolled 82 patients (mean age 71 ± 7 years) with solid organ tumours, divided into 4 subgroups: lung (9 patients-11%), gastroenteric (16 patients-20%), urinary (48 patients-58%) and other solid tumours (9 patients-11%). Mortality and cancer incidence among secondary lead smelter workers.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the mortality pattern and the cancer incidence in a cohort of long term smelter workers exposed to lead. METHODS: The cohort consists of 664 male lead battery workers, employed for at least three months in 1942-87. From 1969 the values of all blood lead samples repeatedly obtained from these workers every two to three months, have been collected in a database. The expected mortality and morbidity 1969-89 was estimated from the county rates, specified for cause, sex, five-year age groups, and calendar year. Individual exposure matrices have been calculated and used for d

[Advantages of transesophageal color Doppler echocardiography in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of cardiac masses].

To determine the clinical advantages of transesophageal color Doppler echocardiography (TEE) for imaging cardiac tumors and left atrial thrombi, 24 cases with intra- or extracardiac masses were examined by transthoracic color Doppler echocardiography (TTE) and TEE before and after cardiac surgery. Five with left atrial myxomas, two with lung tumors, five with mediastinal tumors and 12 with mitral stenosis coexisting left atrial thrombi were included in this study. The echocardiographic findings of the cardiac masses were compared with the surgical findings in all cases. In all of the five case

Giant primary cardiac alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma of the right atrium.

Primary cardiac alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma (ARMS) is an extremely rare malignant tumor with dismal prognosis. We herein report a case of right atrial ARMS in a 63-year-old female with intermittent dizziness. Complete surgical resection of the mass was performed and the postoperative histopathologic examination confirmed ARMS. The patient received adjuvant therapy after surgery and was doing well at 1-year follow-up.

[Simultaneous occurrence and treatment of right atrial myxoma and extensive colonic polyposis causing recurrent intestinal hemorrhages].

The authors describe the case history of 68 year old man. Right atrial myxoma had been diagnosed two years prior to this present observation, however surgical intervention has been contraindicated due to high operative risk. Later the patient was referred to a cardiological evaluation because of chronic atrial fibrillation before a cataract surgery in a symptom free condition. The right atrial myxoma caused inflow obstruction and tricuspid regurgitation was removed before the eye surgery. In addition, tricuspid valve replacement and revascularization of three coronary arteries has been perform

[Successful resection and repair of the superior vena cava and right atrium in a patient with invasive thymoma].

A 45-year-old female, who suffered from Superior Vena Cava (SVC) syndrome, was diagnosed as invasive thymoma by means of trans-sternal aspiration cytology (TSAC). After preoperative radiotherapy and two courses of neoadjuvant chemotherapy, she underwent radical tumor resection combined with partial resection of both SVC and the right atrium followed by pericardial patch repair under the cardiopulmonary bypass. Complete resection is the most important procedure for the therapy of invasive thymoma, even if the tumor is in advanced stage invading to large vessels such as SVC. As far as our knowle
