Pulse Rate Variability Is Not the Same as Heart Rate Variability: Implications for Sports Performance and Injury Prevention.

BACKGROUND: A key metric utilized by coaches and athletes to track athlete performance is heart rate variability (HRV). HRV calculated via electrocardiogram (ECG) has been shown to track autonomic function. However, many wearable devices utilize photoplethysmography (PPG) to calculate pulse rate variability (PRV). Our study investigated the agreement between PRV and HRV in a beat-to-beat analysis in a sample of American football players. Data from 103 male, Division I collegiate American football athletes, collected over three seasons, were analyzed. Heart rate (HR), pulse rate (PR), and two t…

Rethinking rate-related myocardial injury in sepsis: atrial fibrillation, heart rate, cardiac troponin T and long-term mortality.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF), elevated heart rate and elevated high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) are common in sepsis, but their independent and combined prognostic significance remains uncertain. METHODS: This secondary analysis of the retrospective Sepsis and Elevated Troponin cohort study included adults with sepsis requiring vasopressor support admitted to critical care units at Danderyd University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden, between March 2012 and September 2021. Eligible patients fulfilled Sepsis-3 criteria and had hs-cTnT measured within 48 hours of sepsis onset. P…

An FPGA-based design for power efficient low delay rate adaptive pacemaker using accelerometer and heart rate sensor.

This paper presents a power efficient, low delay and rate adaptive dual chamber pacemaker (PLRDPM) using heart rate and accelerometer sensor. In recent years, number of modifications have been done in the pacemaker design. However, design of an implantable device on an open source is still challenging. Through this paper, we are proposing a "proof of concept" for the design of PLRDPM on FPGA for improving the vital parameters: delay and power consumption. The proposed PLRDPM comprises of accelerometer and heart rate sensors to measure physical activity's effect on heart rate of the bradycardia…

Quantification of autonomic nervous activity by heart rate variability and approximate entropy in high ultrafiltration rate during hemodialysis.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have focused on the imbalance of the autonomic nervous system in ultrafiltration rate (UFR) subjects without blood pressure variation during maintenance hemodialysis (HD), although the role of autonomic nervous system activation during HD has been proposed to be an important factor for the maintenance of blood pressure. METHODS: Variations over time in autonomic nervous activity due to differences in UFR were evaluated by measuring heart rate variability (HRV) and approximate entropy (ApEn) in 35 HD patients without blood pressure variations during HD session. The subj…

cAMP sensitivity of HCN pacemaker channels determines basal heart rate but is not critical for autonomic rate control.

BACKGROUND: HCN channels activate the pacemaker current I(f), which is thought to contribute significantly to generation and regulation of heart rhythm. HCN4 represents the dominant isotype in the sinoatrial node and binding of cAMP was suggested to be necessary for autonomic heart rate regulation. METHODS AND RESULTS: In a candidate gene approach, a heterozygous insertion of 13 nucleotides in exon 6 of the HCN4 gene leading to a truncated cyclic nucleotide-binding domain was identified in a 45-year-old woman with sinus bradycardia. Biophysical properties determined by whole-cell patch-clamp …

Changes in heart rate and respiration rate in patients with vestibular dysfunction following head movements which provoke dizziness.

Patients with vestibular dysfunction often complain of additional symptoms typical of panic disorder and/or hyperventilation. This study investigated whether autonomic and respiratory symptoms reported by patients with vestibular disorders were associated with objective changes in heart and respiration rate following head movements provoking dizziness. Subjective ratings of symptoms and anxiety and objective measures of heart and respiration rate were obtained from 29 patients and 16 healthy controls immediately before and after the subjects performed three standardised sets of vigorous head m

Interrater reliability of craniosacral rate measurements and their relationship with subjects' and examiners' heart and respiratory rate measurements.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The evaluation of craniosacral motion is an approach used by physical therapists and other health professionals to assess the causes of pain and dysfunction, but evidence for the existence of this motion is lacking and the reproducibility of the results of this palpatory technique has not been studied. This study examined the interexaminer reliability of craniosacral rate and the relationships among craniosacral rate and subjects' and examiners' heart and respiratory rates. SUBJECTS: Participants were 12 children and adults with histories of physical trauma, surgery, o

Effects of prone and supine position on heart rate, respiratory rate and motor activity in fullterm newborn infants.

Polygraphic recordings were obtained for 24 normal full-term neonates on their 4th or 5th day of life. Thirteen of the infants were first fed, laid supine for 3 hours, fed again around noon and laid prone for 3 more hours. The other 11 were first laid prone and then supine. The awake state was observed more in the supine than the prone position (P less than 0.001). Wakefulness occurred at the expense of state 1 and/or state 2. The heart rate (HR) was higher in babies lying prone. It was also higher in the afternoon than in the morning. No such relationship was found for the respiratory rate (R…

Relationship between heart rate and minute ventilation, tidal volume and respiratory rate during brief and low level exercise.

The correlation between heart rate (HR) and three respiratory parameters, minute ventilation (VE), tidal volume (Vt), and respiratory rate (RR), were studied. Four healthy subjects performed four exercise tests (duration 30 seconds at 50, 100, 150, or 200 W), in random order. Cardio-respiratory parameters were recorded respiratory cycle by respiratory cycle. The results of these low level exercise tests showed that oxygen consumption (VO2) was strongly correlated with VE (r = 0.91 +/- 0.10; P less than 0.01) (except in one test) and Vt (r = 0.91 +/- 0.07; P less than 0.001) (except in one test…

Detecting sleep apnea using non-linear measures of heart rate variability.

BACKGROUND: Sleep apnea is highly prevalent yet frequently underdiagnosed due to the cost and complexity of polysomnography. Heart rate variability (HRV) offers a scalable alternative for early screening, but conventional HRV metrics often overlook the multi-scale autonomic disturbances characteristic of apnea. METHODS: We evaluated scale-dependent detrended fluctuation analysis (sDFA), which quantifies how heartbeat-interval correlations evolve across temporal scales, using RR-interval data from Sleep Heart Health Study ([Formula: see text]). The discriminative performance of sDFA was compare…

Longitudinal Resting State Heart Rate Variability in Young Children With Autism.

As a potential indicator of social competence, the present study longitudinally examined resting state heart rate variability, measured as respiratory sinus arrythmia (RSA), at two time points in young children with autism (AU), children with intellectual disability without AU (ID), and typically developing children (TD). Participants were 29- to 81-month-old children. We replicated previous findings of lower resting state RSA in children with AU as compared to TD children. We further advanced the current knowledge by demonstrating that children with AU also exhibited lower resting state RSA c…

Prenatal maternal distress and fetal heart rate: Examining sex-specific sensitivity.

Fetal heart rate is linked to fetal well-being and later neurodevelopmental outcomes. Prenatal maternal psychological distress may influence fetal heart rate through physiological changes in utero. However, few studies have examined how maternal distress relates to fetal heart rate, or whether these associations differ by fetal sex. We hypothesized that prenatal maternal depressive and anxiety symptoms and emotion dysregulation would associate with higher fetal heart rate and lower variability, with stronger effects among males. Participants were 159 third-trimester mothers, with a range of sc…

A reporting checklist for human and animal heart rate variability research.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is widely used as a non-invasive marker of cardiac autonomic regulation in human and experimental animal research. Its accessibility, repeatability, and applicability across clinical, psychophysiological, wearable, and preclinical settings make HRV a valuable translational tool. However, HRV indices are highly sensitive to physiological and methodological context, including recording duration, signal quality, respiratory pattern, posture, behavioral state, circadian timing, medication use, anesthesia, temperature, species, strain, artefact correction, frequency-ban…

Smartwatch-Based Heart Rate Detection in Atrial, Ventricular and Pulseless Arrhythmias.

BACKGROUND & AIM: Smartwatches can provide a non-invasive heart rate (HR) monitoring to aid screening for atrial fibrillation, however, the accuracy of HR detections in the context of other arrhythmias requires further investigation. We aimed to assess the accuracy of HR measurements of two commonly used wearables at onset, during and termination of various induced and paced arrhythmias. METHOD: Patients undergoing an electrophysiology study were fitted intraprocedurally with both the Apple Watch Series 4 (AW) and Fitbit Versa (FB). Detected HRs on the devices were recorded at initiation, dur…

Interference resistant contactless heart rate variability monitoring via millimeter wave radar.

Heart rate variability (HRV) plays a critical role in the prediction of diseases related to cardiovascular and autonomic nervous system. HRV monitoring using millimeter-wave radar has been exploited as a promising research direction for daily health monitoring and supervision of patients with skin diseases. A critical issue with these solutions includes that good monitoring performance could only be achieved with unmixed heartbeat signal, while random body movements (RBM) and interference from respiration harmonics severely hinder the separation of heartbeat signal. In this paper, we propose a…

Posttraining Dry Cupping Treatment Elevates Heart Rate Variability in Taekwondo Athletes.

Elite taekwondo (TKD) athletes require physical strength and mastery of complex techniques to excel in a highly competitive environment. This study aimed to investigate the effects of dry cupping posttraining on heart rate variability (HRV) and recovery in TKD athletes. Fourteen male TKD athletes participated in a crossover study and were randomly assigned to either a dry cupping (Group CUP) or a placebo group without cupping (Group PLA) after completing a standardized TKD-specific training program. A 28-day washout period was implemented between the two treatments to minimize potential carryo…

The Impact of Heart Rate on Biomechanical Characteristics of Aortic Aneurysm.

Reducing heart rate has been advocated as a pivotal therapeutic approach for patients with aortic aneurysm (AA), aiming to mitigate the risk of rupture. This study aims to investigate the effect of heart rate on the biomechanical characteristics of aneurysms. A patient-specific thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) model has been built, and the biomechanical characteristics of the aortic wall under different heart rate conditions, including atrial fibrillation (AF) condition, have been simulated by applying the blood pressure on the inner wall. The viscoelasticity of the aorta has been considered to …

Heart rate variability in unstably housed Veterans with mental health conditions.

OBJECTIVE: Almost 10% of Veterans have experienced homelessness, which is associated with complex healthcare needs and high levels of physical and mental health comorbidities. Measures of autonomic nervous system dysregulation, including higher resting heart rate (HR) and lower time domain and higher frequency domain measures of heart rate variability (HRV), are associated with worse physical and mental health in Veteran and civilian populations. However, these associations have not been explored in unstably housed Veterans with mental health conditions. METHOD: 43 male Veterans who were home…
