BACKGROUND: Recently a high prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection has been reported in adult patients with chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (cITP). Furthermore, after H. pylori eradication therapy in such patients, their platelet counts have been observed to increase, suggesting that H. pylori may be a causative agent of adult cITP. However, there have been only a few reports of children with cITP. The purpose of the present paper was to examine the association between H. pylori infection and cITP in Japanese children.
METHODS: Helicobacter pylori stool antigens (HpSA) were m

Helicobacter pylori, one of the most commonly encountered human pathogens, has been recognized in more than half of adults and children with chronic nonspecific gastritis, and nearly all children with peptic ulcer disease demonstrate antral infection with H. pylori. A high prevalence and early colonization of H. pylori infection in childhood was described in developing countries in contrast to developed countries. The current diagnostic methods include histology, microbiological culture, urease activity detection, polymerase chain reaction, and stool antigen detection. The infection often pres

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Data from previous studies on gastric acid secretion and the prevalence of H. pylori in liver cirrhosis patients remain poorly defined. H. pylori is a potential source of NH3, but the possible role of H. pylori in hepatic encephalopathy is not clear. The purpose of this study was to compare gastric acid secretion, the impact of H. pylori infection, and the production of NH3 between cirrhotic patients and healthy, matched controls.
METHODS: Twenty-nine patients with liver cirrhosis (HBV, n=12; Alcohol, n=12; HCV, n=5) were matched with 33 healthy persons for age and sex. None

The objective of this study was to determine the sensitivity, specificity, positive (PPV), and negative predictive values (NPV) of Diff-Quik-stained gastric imprint cytology smears in the detection of H. pylori compared with histology. Air-dried imprint smears of gastric biopsies from 150 patients were stained by the Diff-Quik method in the endoscopy suite and examined for H. pylori, providing results within minutes. The presence of inflammation and intestinal metaplasia were documented. The same biopsy was processed and stained with H&E and Warthin-Starry stains, and reviewed by a different p

It has been documented that sucralfate, a basic aluminum salt, enhances the efficacies of antibiotics against Helicobacter pylori, resulting in eradication rates comparable to those associated with the use of proton pump inhibitors. However, its mechanism of action remains unclear. The aim of the present study was to investigate sucralfate's ability to complement antibiotic treatment of H. pylori infection in vivo. Four weeks following induced H. pylori infection, clarithromycin (CAM) and amoxicillin (AMPC) were administered orally to C57BL/6 mice for 5 days, both with and without sucralfate o

During the period 1989-1996, we retrospectively investigated 104 children and adolescents with Helicobacter pylori infection diagnosed by gastroscopy. The median age was 12.11 +/- 3.31 years, 55% were female and 45% male. The chief complaint of 92% of the children was abdominal pain, mainly epigastric. The typical macroscopic finding was nodular gastritis. The most common microscopic picture was chronic superficial gastritis with lymphatic follicles and the presence of Helicobacter pylori. We demonstrated correlation between these gastroscopic and histological findings. Children who suffered f

Patients who have undergone distal gastrectomy for peptic ulcer are at higher risk of developing gastric remnant cancer, and chronic bile reflux is believed to increase the risk of cancer in remnant stomach. In remnant stomach, carcinogenesis may be prevented by selecting the anastomosis method with a few reflux of intestinal juice including a bile acid. How Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) infection participate in stomal gastritis and gastric remnant cancer, same as early gastric cancer in the intact stomach, is attended. Our purpose was to evaluate the role of Helicobacter pylori in complications arising from Meckel's diverticulum in the Jewish and Arab populations of Jerusalem. Diverticular tissues were studied by hematoxylin-eosin, Giemsa, and two immunohistochemical stainings. Three groups of patients were identified: (1) 20 patients in whom Meckel's diverticulum was an incidental finding during laparotomy for other causes; (2) 7 patients with heterotopic gastric mucosa who underwent laparotomy because of bleeding from Meckel's diverticulum--3 were infected with Helicobacter pylori; and (3) 15 patients who

BACKGROUND: Chromochloris zofingiensis, a freshwater alga capable of synthesizing both triacylglycerol (TAG) and astaxanthin, has been receiving increasing attention as a leading candidate producer. While the mechanism of oleaginousness and/or carotenogenesis has been studied under such induction conditions as nitrogen deprivation, high light and glucose feeding, it remains to be elucidated in response to salt stress, a condition critical for reducing freshwater footprint during algal production processes.
RESULTS: Firstly, the effect of salt concentrations on growth, lipids and carotenoids w

Helicobacter pylori adherence in the human gastric mucosa involves specific bacterial adhesins and cognate host receptors. Here, we identify sialyl-dimeric-Lewis x glycosphingolipid as a receptor for H. pylori and show that H. pylori infection induced formation of sialyl-Lewis x antigens in gastric epithelium in humans and in a Rhesus monkey. The corresponding sialic acid-binding adhesin (SabA) was isolated with the "retagging" method, and the underlying sabA gene (JHP662/HP0725) was identified. The ability of many H. pylori strains to adhere to sialylated glycoconjugates expressed during chro

Helicobacter pylori plays a major role in chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer. In addition, it has been shown to be associated with gastric carcinoma. In this study, the authors compared the detection of IgG antibodies specific to H. pylori by enzyme-immunoassay with culture, histology and a CLO test as tools for diagnosis of H. pylori infection. If the criteria that patients will be considered as H. pylori infected only when their samples are positive by culture or CLO test and histology were used, the sensitivity and specificity of detecting IgG in sera were 96.84 and 72.04 per cent respectiv

H. pylori infection is associated with major gastroduodenal diseases, i.e. peptic ulcer, cancer and MALT lymphoma in the stomach. The pathogenesis of H. pylori in these diseases has been elucidated. Non-atrophic diffuse antral gastritis is correlated with duodenal ulcer and multifocal atrophic gastritis is correlated with both gastric ulcer and cancer. It is well known that Japanese tend to have multifocal atrophic gastritis. H. pylori eradication therapy dramatically reduces the recurrence rates of gastroduodenal ulcers in humans and bacterial eradication for peptic ulcer patients has been re

Helicobacter pylori is an organism that is thought to be important in the pathophysiology of peptic ulcer disease and gastritis. Eradication of the organism is useful in clinical cure of infected patients. Efficacious regimens generally include an antisecretory agent combined with two to three antimicrobials. The main determinant of overall cost of treatment is the rate of eradication of the organism. Impediments to patient compliance include intensive dosage schedules and drug side effects. Resistance can occur to the commonly used antibiotics but can usually be overcome with an altered regim

BACKGROUND/AIM: Acid output is related to the gastritis pattern in Helicobacter pylori infection. The hypothesis to be tested is that gastritis in patients with Barrett's esophagus, defined as columnar epithelia lined lower esophagus (CELLO) with intestinal metaplasia (IM), is antrum predominant.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients undergoing esophagogastroduodenoscopy were investigated for CELLO. The gastritis parameters H. pylori density, activity, and chronicity were graded in biopsy specimens of antrum and corpus. IM was assessed in biopsies from CELLO patients. In a prospective part, 19 patie

BACKGROUND: Nitrite (NO2-) in swallowed saliva is reduced to nitric oxide (NO) and other nitrogen oxides by the intragastric acidity. This mechanism is probably important for the intragastric clearance of ingested micro-organisms and nitrosating compounds. The study examines the balance between intragastric NO and NO2- in relation to endogenous acid production and infection with Helicobacter pylori.
METHODS: Six healthy H. pylori-negative and six H. pylori-positive volunteers with no known gastroduodenal pathology were examined after an overnight fast. Gastric NO was measured using a chemilum
