Characterization of Staphylococcus epidermidis clinical isolates from hospitalized patients with bloodstream infection obtained in two time periods.

BACKGROUND: In recent years Staphylococcus epidermidis has been considered an important and frequent causative agent of health care-associated infections (HAIs), increasing the costs of hospitalization, morbidity, and mortality. Antibiotic resistance and biofilm formation are the most important obstacles in the treatment of infections caused by this microorganism. The aim of this work was to determine the most prevalent STs, as well as the antibiotic resistance profile and biofilm formation of S. epidermidis clinical isolates obtained from hospitalized patients in two hospitals in Acapulco, Gu

Phenotypic and molecular characterization of Staphylococcus aureus isolates conducted in nares of psoriatic patients attending a public hospital in Argentina.

Although Staphylococcus aureus increases its relative abundance in psoriasis when compared with the microbiome of healthy subjects, it is not the most important microorganism underlying this disease. However, there is scant data on the role and molecular features of S. aureus strains in psoriasis; therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate nasal carriage of this microorganism, its phenotypic and molecular characteristics as well as the impact of host factors on its carriage in psoriatic patients. The presence of S. aureus was analyzed in nasal swabs from 46 healthy volunteers and 50 psor

Frequency, Local Dynamics, and Genomic Characteristics of ESBL-Producing Escherichia coli Isolated From Specimens of Hospitalized Horses.

Previous research identified veterinary clinics as hotspots with respect to accumulation and spread of multidrug resistant extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli (EC). Therefore, promoting the prudent use of antibiotics to decrease selective pressure in that particular clinical environment is preferable to enhance biosecurity for animal patients and hospital staff. Accordingly, this study comparatively investigated the impact of two distinct perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis (PAP) regimens (short-term versus prolonged) on ESBL-EC carriage of horses subjected to coli

The Spread of Plasmidic AmpC in a General Lebanese Hospital Over Nine Consecutive Years and the Relationship With Restricted Isolation Protocols.

Background: The dreaded bacterial infection by extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL)-producers has always troubled the medical field whether on the public, scientific, or clinical levels. One of the lesser known β-lactamases, which is capable of hydrolyzing broad and extended-spectrum cephalosporins-i.e., cephamycins plus oxyimino-β-lactams-are the AmpC β-lactamases. This group, which has also been termed occasionally-and incorrectly-as ESBL Class C, confers resistance to β-lactamase inhibitors. The prevalence of plasmidic AmpC (pAmpC) strains is possibly still a matter of debate considering t

Genomic Investigation of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus ST113 Strains Isolated from Tertiary Care Hospitals in Pakistan.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a multi-drug resistant and opportunistic pathogen. The emergence of new clones of MRSA in both healthcare settings and the community warrants serious attention and epidemiological surveillance. However, epidemiological data of MRSA isolates from Pakistan are limited. We performed a whole-genome-based comparative analysis of two (P10 and R46) MRSA strains isolated from two provinces of Pakistan to understand the genetic diversity, sequence type (ST), and distribution of virulence and antibiotic-resistance genes. The strains belong to ST113 a

Prevalence and Clonal Distribution of Azole-Resistant Candida parapsilosis Isolates Causing Bloodstream Infections in a Large Italian Hospital.

The most prevalent cause of nosocomial bloodstream infection (BSI) among non-C. albicans Candida species, Candida parapsilosis, may not only be resistant to azole antifungal agents but also disseminate to vulnerable patients. In this survey of BSIs occurring at a large Italian hospital between May 2014 and May 2019, C. parapsilosis accounted for 28.5% (241/844) of all Candida isolates causing BSI episodes. The majority of episodes (151/844) occurred in medical wards. Across the 5 yearly periods, the rates of azole non-susceptibility were 11.8% (4/34), 17.8% (8/45), 28.6% (12/42), 32.8% (19/58)

In Vitro Activity of Fosfomycin and Nitrofurantoin Against Contemporary Enterobacterales Pathogens Isolated from Indian Tertiary Care Hospitals.

Background: In India, multidrug resistance in community and hospital associated Gram-negative pathogens has increased sharply over the past few years. In the absence of novel oral multidrug resistant-pathogen active therapies, the therapeutic situation with regard to community infections is even more challenging. Hence, the focus is now shifting toward potentially expanding the utility of older antibiotics such as fosfomycin and nitrofurantoin beyond their approved pathogen coverage. The current study was undertaken to assess the activity of fosfomycin and nitrofurantoin against Enterobacteral

Clonal dissemination of high-level gentamicin-resistant isolates of Enterococcus faecalis within a university hospital in southeastern Iran.

BACKGROUND: Combination of a cell wall-active antibiotic with an aminoglycoside confers a synergistic effect in the treatment of some severe enterococcal infections. Unfortunately, with the emergence of enterococci with high-level resistance to aminoglycosides, particularly to gentamicin, the efficacy of the synergistic combinations has decreased. In this study, high-level gentamicin-resistant (HLGR) isolates of enterococci and the diversity of the genes encoding aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes (AMEs) as well as putative clonal dissemination of HLGR isolates were investigated in a university
