Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) remains a common serious neurological emergency especially in the developing world. Elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) is often a feature of severe TBM and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. We report a patient who, within a day of receiving 20 ml of hypertonic (7.5%) saline intrathecally, developed flaccid paraplegia and complete sensory loss below the umbilicus. The results of a survey conducted in a group of 60 women, three years after they underwent induction of mid-trimester abortion by extra-amniotic infusion of isotonic saline solution, are presented.
