Crowding refers to the inability to recognize objects in clutter, setting a fundamental limit on various perceptual tasks such as reading and facial recognition. While prevailing models suggest that crowding is a unitary phenomenon occurring at an early level of processing, recent studies have shown that crowding might also occur at higher levels of representation. Here we investigated whether local and global crowding interference co-occurs within the same display. To do so, we tested the distinctive contribution of local flanker features and global configurations of the flankers on the patte

The perceived position of a flash aligned with a moving object usually lags behind that object. This illusion is well known as the flash-lag effect. Interestingly, head rotation alone can also induce a flash-lag effect. To date, the underlying mechanism for the head-rotation-induced flash-lag effect remains unclear. Using a virtual reality approach, we examined the contribution of vestibular signal processing in producing the effect. We found that vestibular, rather than kinesthetic, signal processing is critical for this type of flash-lag effect to occur. When head rotation induced a stationa

Research has shown that consistent stereoscopic information improves the vection (i.e. illusions of self-motion) induced in stationary observers. This study investigates the effects of placing stereoscopic information into direct conflict with monocular motion signals by swapping the observer's left and right eye views to reverse disparity. Experiments compared the vection induced by stereo-consistent, stereo-reversed and flat-stereo patterns of: (1) same-size optic flow, which contained monocular motion perspective information about self-motion, and (2) changing-size optic flow, which provide…

When a figure moves behind a stationary narrow slit, observers often report seeing the figure as a whole, a phenomenon called slit viewing or anorthoscopic perception. Interestingly, in slit viewing, the figure is perceived compressed along the axis of motion. As with other perceptual distortions, it is unclear whether the perceptual space in the vicinity of the slit or the representation of the figure itself undergoes compression. In a psychophysical experiment, we tested these two hypotheses. We found that the percept of a stationary bar, presented within the slit, was not distorted even whe

Reports on patients who lack ownership over their entire body are extremely rare. Here, we present patient SA who suffered from complete body disownership after a tumour resection in the right temporoparietal cortex. Neuropsychological assessment disclosed selective bilateral ownership problems, despite intact primary visual and somatosensory senses. SA's disownership seems to stem from a suboptimal multimodal integration, as shown by the rubber hand illusion and the beneficial effect during and after simple exercises aiming at multisensory recalibration.

The field of tissue engineering is advancing steadily, partly due to advancements in rapid prototyping technology. Even with increasing focus, successful complex tissue regeneration of vascularized bone, cartilage and the osteochondral interface remains largely illusive. This review examines current three-dimensional printing techniques and their application towards bone, cartilage and osteochondral regeneration. The importance of, and benefit to, nanomaterial integration is also highlighted with recent published examples. Early-stage successes and challenges of recent studies are discussed, w

Surgery for a narrow palpebral fissure caused by enophthalmos after a blow-out orbital fracture was performed in three patients from seven months to three years after injury. The surgery was directed not to the cause of the enophthalmos, but to the narrowed palpebral fissure which was the noticeable cosmetic defect. The surgical procedure used to widen the palpebral fissure was the Müller's muscle-conjunctival resection blepharoptosis operation, and a phenylephrine test was used preoperatively to select candidates for this operation. After widening of the palpebral fissure, which created the i

Individual differences in headset fit, visual illusions of self-motion (vection) and postural sway are all thought to contribute to cybersickness. This head-mounted display (HMD) study examined their effects during a virtual reality flight simulation game. Participants piloted a flying car for up to 10 min with the key HMD fit parameter of interpupillary distance (IPD) set to 58, 63 or 68 mm. After measuring their physical IPD, we calculated the IPD mismatch during each trial. We found that their physical IPD, the nature of their IPD mismatch, the type and strength of their vection, and the ch…

A large literature has described illusions of tactile distance perception. Across many body parts, there is an anisotropic bias for tactile distances to be perceived as larger when oriented across body part width than when oriented along body part length. This study investigated whether there is a similar bias on the tongue. A forced-choice judgment task was used in which participants judged which of two tactile distances felt larger either on the tongue or on the hand dorsum, a region for which anisotropy is well established. Anisotropy was measured using the method of constant stimuli. Clear…

Encephalitis is a brain inflammation, which could involve also the meninges. The etiology of encephalitis could be: viral, bacterial, fungal or autoimmune. Anti-NMDAR encephalitis is an immune disorder, easy to diagnose and is a treatable condition. Most patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis develop a multistage illness that progresses from psychosis, memory deficits, seizures, to catatonic state and breathing instability. We present a case report of a 20-year old woman, who presented: amnesia, visual hallucination, illusions, seizures after that occurred following autoimmune encephalitis. The…

To define clinical presentations of visual auras and to reveal their clinical, encephalographic and neuroimaging correlates, we examined 23 patients, aged from 5 to 25 years (mean 14±6 years), with focal forms of epilepsy. Patients had visual auras regardless of the etiology of epilepsy which developed immediately before epileptic seizures or were isolated. Patients had simple or complex visual hallucinations, the former occurring more frequently, visual illusions and ictal amaurosis. Positive visual phenomena were noted more frequently than negative ones. In most of the patients, visual hallu…

To measure the ocular fixation and sequential scanning dysfunction assumed responsible for the visual reading symptoms which characterize dyslexia or learning disabilities, an optokinetically based tracking method was devised. This method quantitatively demonstrated significantly reduced fixation, tracking, and perceptual or visual-span scores as well as "movement illusions" for 70 cerebellar-vestibular dysfunctioning persons with learning disabilities vs 70 controls. Such data tended to validate the hypothesis that cerebellar-vestibular-determined fixation and tracking mechanisms predispose d…

Three disorders of facial recognition and perception in acute schizophrenia and mescaline-induced psychosis are described and illustrated using original clinical and experimental material: "affective prosopagnosia" or stress-related dysfunctional face recognition; "physiognomization" of the environment or persistent illusions and hallucinations of nonspecific faces; and the "mirror phenomenon" or the experience of inner alienation from one's reflected face, which is perceived as independently alive, sinister, and generally physically distorted. It is proposed that neuropsychology suggests rela…

Conflicting multisensory signals may alter embodiment to produce self-identification with a foreign body, but the role of olfaction in this process has been overlooked. We studied in healthy participants how sex (male and female sweat odors) and gender (male and female cosmetic scents) olfactory stimuli contribute to embodiment. Participants saw, on a head mounted display, the first-person perspective of a sex mismatching person. Synchronous visuotactile stimulation was applied to enhance illusory embodiment. Simultaneously, they smelled either sex- or gender- congruent or incongruent stimuli.

In this review we focus on maladaptive brain reorganization after spinal cord injury (SCI), including the development of neuropathic pain, and its relationship with impairments in body representation and multisensory integration. We will discuss the implications of altered sensorimotor interactions after SCI with and without neuropathic pain and possible deficits in multisensory integration and body representation. Within this framework we will examine published research findings focused on the use of bodily illusions to manipulate multisensory body representation to induce analgesic effects i…

OBJECTIVES: The present study focuses on a review of scientific literature upon structural and functional abnormalities of the insular cortex found in schizophrenic patients in order to emphasize links between the pathophysiology of this brain region and the symptomatology of schizophrenia.
METHODS: From a review based upon journal articles published since 2002 and indexed into the Pubmed data base, we first studied the main findings on the function of the insular cortex and its involvement in the perception and representation of the body states, as it is one of the main neural substrates for

After being told that my work was "not independent enough" and that I was "not doing real science," I began to question how academic medicine defines success. Through teamwork in translational HIV-1 research and community-engaged programs like The Last Gift, I have come to see that independence is an illusion, and that collaboration, empathy, and connection are the true engines of discovery and impactful research. This reflection challenges the traditional, hegemonic, metrics of scientific achievement and calls for a broader definition that values mentorship, equity, and collective progress as
