Chickenpox is caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), a DNA virus of the herpes virus family. While typically mild and self-limiting, it poses a high risk of contagion. A generalized pruritic rash is the common initial symptom among pediatric populations. Complications often include bacterial infections of skin lesions, predominantly staphylococcal or streptococcal, which may progress to cellulitis or bullous impetigo. Additionally, it may lead to more severe complications such as cerebellar ataxia, encephalitis, viral pneumonia, hemorrhagic conditions, and joint involvement. We present a …

Since the beginning of December 2022, an unusually high number of cases and deaths of Group A Streptococcus (GAS) infections has been reported in many European countries. GAS infection frequently causes mild diseases such as pharyngitis, tonsillitis, impetigo, cellulitis, and scarlet fever. However, in rare instances, GAS infection can lead to invasive, life-threatening conditions like necrotizing fasciitis and toxic shock syndrome, which are associated with high mortality. The aim of the study was to present the clinical course of invasive Streptococcus pyogenes infections and to highlight th…

Epidemiological studies link Sarcoptes scabiei infection and impetigo. Scabies mites can promote Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Streptococcus) and Staphylococcus aureus infections by breaching the skin barrier and excreting molecules that inhibit host innate immune responses. However, little is known about the composition and the function of the scabies-associated microbiota. Here, high-throughput whole-metagenome sequencing was used to explore the scabies-associated microbiome. Scabies mites including their immediate microenvironments were isolated from two patients with severe scabies in No…

Pustular psoriasis of pregnancy (PPP), also known as impetigo herpetiformis, is a rare gestational dermatosis that may induce life-threatening complications for both the mother and fetus. Treatment of recalcitrant generalized PPP may be challenging as available therapeutic options are limited. We herein present a 24-year-old pregnant woman with generalized PPP accompanied by high fever, fatigue, leukocytosis, and elevated levels of serum acute phase reactants. The patient was resistant to a combination treatment of high-dose cyclosporine (7.5 mg/kg/d, peroral), systemic methylprednisolone (1 m…

OBJECTIVES: We report a cluster of acute rheumatic fever (ARF) cases and the public health response in a high-burden Australian setting.
METHODS: The public health unit was notified of an increase in ARF cases in a remote Australian Aboriginal community. A multi-disciplinary group coordinated the response. Household contacts were screened for ARF or group A Streptococcus (GAS) infection by questionnaire and swab collection, offered an echocardiogram if aged 5-20 years, and intramuscular benzathine benzylpenicillin if aged over one year or if less than one year with impetigo.
RESULTS: Fifteen…

Staphylococcus aureus is a pathogen that causes skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) in dermatology patients. There is an increasing rate … mpared. Of the 66 samples, 57% were males and 43% were females. S aureus was more commonly found in impetigo, folliculitis, furuncles and secondarily infected psoriasis and more commonly located on the extremities. MSSA accounted for 73% (48) of the cases and MRSA accounted for 27% (18) of the cases. The antibiotics most effective against all S aureus cult …

The efficacy and safety of amoxicillin plus clavulanic acid, a combination of antibiotics potentially effective against beta-lactamase producing bacteria, was compared with that of amoxicillin, erythromycin and co-trimoxazole in an open label, randomized trial in 200 children with mild to severe skin and soft tissue infections. The majority (47%) had impetigo. Fifty (25%) children had mild pyodermas, 56 (28%) had moderate and 94 (47%) children had severe pyodermas. A pure growth of Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from 130 (65%) children. S. pyogenes was isolated from 42 (21%), children and …

BACKGROUND: Tuberculids are rarely associated with male genital tract tuberculosis (TB). Tuberculous epididymo-orchitis (TBEO) has been associated rarely with papulonecrotic tuberculid (PNT) but not with erythema induratum (EI) or the simultaneous occurrence of different tuberculids.
METHODS: A retrospective assessment of tuberculids that occurred with underlying TBEO was carried out.
RESULTS: Five patients, four with one and one with two skin biopsies, with clinical diagnoses of PNT (two), EI (one), impetigo (two) and calf ulcer (one), formed the study cohort. Histopathological evaluation c…

Among these 50 had impetigo and 15 each ahd furunculosis and fouiculitis. The remaining included various other clinical entities. Children under 10 years were observed to have high incidence of pyoderma. A total of 88 strains of staphylococci (77 coagulase positive and 11 coagulase negative strains) 25 strains of beta haemolytic streptococci and 3 strains of Klebsiella were …

Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Streptococcus, GAS) is a major human pathogen capable of causing infections ranging from mild pharyngitis and impetigo to severe invasive diseases such as bacteremia, necrotizing fasciitis, and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS). Historically, the incidence of GAS infections declined during the early antibiotic era but began rising again from the early 2000s, driven partly by the emergence of hyper-virulent strains such as emm1 and emm12. From 2005 onward, significant increases in GAS infections were reported globally, accompanied by rising antibiotic res…

BACKGROUND: Genetic diseases leading to skin fragility are clinically and genetically heterogeneous. Dermatologists and pediatricians should be familiar with the variability of manifestations and manifestation age, in order to differentiate these rare diseases from more common causes of blistering, such as infectious (impetigo contagiosa, herpes infection) or traumatic causes (burns, scalds). This is essential to initiate appropriate diagnostic measures, provide information on treatment and prevention and to refer to specialized centers.
OBJECTIVES: The classification of the diseases discusse…
