While studies have explored the prevalence and correlates for hepatitis C (HCV) infection in substance-using and incarcerated populations these studies have not examined the attributes of criminal histories for those with HCV infection. This study examines the HCV infection rate as it relates to criminal risk factors using baseline data from a randomized trial of re-entering offenders and examines how these risk factors vary by gender. Spigelian hernia is a ventral abdominal hernia that only rarely causes incarceration or strangulation of the bowel. There are few reports in the surgical literature of colonic obstruction secondary to incarcerated Spigelian hernia. In this paper, we present a patient with an incarcerated sigmoid colon in a Spigelian hernia sac, mimicking on contrast enema an obstructing carcinoma. Accurate diagnosis was made pre-operatively by computed tomography (CT), and the hernia was repaired by polypropylene mesh in a tension-free manner.

We present a 33-year-old woman with a history of radical hysterectomy and pelvic radiation who developed a nonreducible high anterior vaginal wall bulge, postoperative pelvic pain, and dyspareunia. Dynamic MRI revealed herniation of the omentum into the vesico-vaginal space. The incarcerated hernia was repaired transvaginally, and the patient's symptoms improved.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic treatment of acutely incarcerated inguinal hernia is uncommon and still controversial. Those being performed almost all use the transabdominal (TAPP) approach. The authors here present their experience with totally extraperitoneal (TEP) repair of acutely incarcerated hernia.

GOAL: The goal of this study was to determine these parameters among incarcerated youths.
STUDY DESIGN: Both on admission and during incarceration, consecutive adolescents entering the Harris County, Texas, Juvenile Detention Center were evaluated for symptoms of PID. The authors describe the case-history of a 65-year-old patient with an incarcerated scrotal hernia on the left side. An unexpected finding in the sac of the scrotal hernia was the sigmoid colon with an obturating tumour. The patient was subjected to two-stage surgery with a favourable final effect.

Bochdalek hernias presenting in adulthood are rare occurrences. They present commonly as acute surgical emergencies. A case of sudden death due to perforation of gastric ulcer in an incarcerated Bochdalek hernia is reported. This has not been previously documented. Recent literature on the subject is also reviewed.

An elderly woman presented with postprandial cramps in the right lower abdomen and recurrent episodes of low back pain radiating down to the dorsal aspect of her right thigh. Computed tomography (CT) of the pelvis and barium enema with small bowel reflux demonstrated the herniation of an ileal loop through the greater sciatic foramen on the right side. The diagnosis and management of this case are herein described and previous publications on sciatic hernias are reviewed.

From July 1983 to June 1984, 2521 adolescents were medically screened at entry into a detention facility in New York City. A medical history, physical examination, serology for syphilis, and culture for gonorrhea were obtained from each entrant.
