The concept of spectral analysis of urinary reactions (a range of simple chemical tests combined with pattern analysis) is described. A preliminary study in which we used 10 nonspecific tested on untimed urine specimens from 20 controls and 20 diabetics, matched for age and sex, suggested that a combination of these tests could be used to separate diabetics from healthy subjects. About 30 protein-selective chemical reagents have been tested for their ability to inhibit the mRNA binding activity of the 30-S ribosome. A number of reagents were investigated which have been shown by other workers to be capable of modifying free epsilon-amino groups of lysine and all were found to inactivate 30-S ribosomes completely for natural mRNA binding activity. Several reagents selective for histidine, tyrosine, and tryptophan were also found to inactivate. We suggest that the epsilon-amino groups of lysine play an important role in mRNA binding to the 30-S ribosome.

The Boehringer-Mannheim Corporation (BMC) strip test is extremely reliable in indicating an albumin content above 20 mg/gm of dried meconium. All infants born during one year in 14 Milwaukee area hospitals were tested. Of 16,224 newborns, two were diagnosed correctly as suffering from cystic fibrosis and two were missed. False-positive tests were obtained in 0.9% of infants (prematurity, melena, gastroschisis, and intrauterine infection). The strip test is, at present, the best available but not the perfect screening method for cystic fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Haemoglobin E is a variant haemoglobin that can lead to considerable morbidity in compound heterozygous states with beta thalassaemia. Therefore, its detection is important because it permits antenatal counselling. The parts of the world where haemoglobin E is prevalent are resource poor and detection can therefore be problematical. Several recent reports have indicated the potential of the reagent strip test for haematuria in the diagnosis of Schistosoma haematobium infection. A rapid method for the production of freeze-dried kit containing 20 mg HIDA and 0.4 mg SnCl2 X 2H2O at pH 5.5-6.0 was developed using the stannite procedure. The Sn-HIDA ligand has been prepared successfully by dissolving HIDA in stannite solution without further pH adjustment.
