Accuracy of estimated fetal weight below 1,000 g.

The Warsof formula is 1 of 3 currently recommended by the Australian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine for the routine estimation of fetal weight. However, this formula was derived using mostly large fetuses, and its accuracy in extremely low birth-weight fetuses is not known. Using this formula, we studied 184 infants delivering within 14 days of an estimated fetal weight (EFW) < 1,000 g. The mean percent error in EFW was 11.7% underestimation, with 80% of infants underestimated and 61% of estimates within 15% error. The percent error was consistent at 9.6% throughout the first 9 days, but i

In-hospital formula supplementation of healthy breastfeeding newborns.

The UNICEF/WHO Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative suggests that breastfeeding activities in hospital are important to later breastfeeding. Understanding reasons for in-hospital supplementation may help to optimize the successful implementation of this initiative. The objective was to identify predictors of in-hospital initial formula supplementation of healthy, breastfeeding newborns. The authors analyzed 564 Canadian mother-infant pairs and interviewed nurses. Half of the study infants (47.9%) received formula in hospital; the median age at first supplementation was 8.4 hours. Risk for supplem

[Mineral balance during nutritional recuperation of infants with protein deficiency].

Mineral requirements of normal infants change according to growth velocity. They are directly associated to needs for obtaining an adequate composition of new tissue, assure an optimal bone mineralization and for maintaining normal plasma mineral levels. Nutritional rehabilitation of malnourished infants determines increased mineral requirements, which may be not satisfied with usual infant formulas. We studied mineral retention (Ca, P, Mg, Zn and Cu) during nutritional recovery of 9 malnourished male infants (age: 2-7 mo; weight/age < 70%), fed two formulas, both with 85 Kcal/dL (356 KJoule/d…

Engaging South Asian Communities in the United Kingdom to Explore Infant Feeding Practices and Inform Intervention Development: Application of the REPLACE Approach.

Breastfeeding in UK Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities is positively and negatively influenced by cultural beliefs and practices. The LIFT (Learning about Infant Feeding Together) project aimed to understand the determinants of infant feeding in these target communities and to engage them in the development of a culturally specific and acceptable infant feeding intervention to support breastfeeding. Reported here is phase one of the LIFT project guided by the REPLACE approach (a framework for the development of community-based interventions). The project involved an initial lengthy period o

Breastfeeding Experience Among Women Living With HIV: A Global Qualitative Evidence Synthesis.

Infant feeding decisions among women living with HIV (WLHIV) represent a complex intersection of public health guidance, personal values, and lived experiences. Although antiretroviral therapy has reduced vertical transmission risks, these decisions remain fraught with challenges. This qualitative evidence synthesis reviewed 41 studies published up to February 2025, exploring WLHIV's breastfeeding experiences through thematic analysis. Four overarching themes emerged: (a) the contradiction of stigma in breastfeeding and formula feeding, (b) breastfeeding for health benefits versus formula feed

Amino acid-based formula feeding is associated with increased risk of Clostridioides difficile-associated disease in children younger than two years.

Infants and toddlers were previously considered to be exempt from Clostridioides difficile-associated disease (CDAD). However, recent studies reported that Clostridioides difficile (C. difficile) infection can cause severe gastrointestinal symptoms within this age group, yet the influential risk factors related to CDAD in infants remain unknown. Here, we investigated 27 CDAD cases in infants and toddlers under two and found that the amino acid-based formula (AAF) feeding is a notable risk factor closely associated with the development of CDAD in infants. Infants fed with AAF exhibit reduced le

Allergic colitis presenting within the first hours of premature life.

UNLABELLED: A prematurely born infant developed rectal blood loss several hours after birth, after his first formula feeding. Discontinuing the feeding resolved symptoms, but after resuming feeding rectal blood loss reappeared. There were no signs of necrotizing enterocolitis. Suspecting cow's milk allergy, the feeding was changed to a casein-based protein hydrolysate, without effect. Meanwhile, laboratory tests indicated cow's milk allergy. Symptoms only resolved after introducing an amino acid-based formula supporting a definite diagnosis of cow's milk-induced allergic colitis. This is the f

Neonatal nutrition and later outcomes of very low birth weight infants at Kenyatta National Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Extensive research in developed countries has established that very low birth weight (VLBW) infants are particularly vulnerable to the effects of early nutritional deficiencies. There is, however, little information from poor countries on the long-term effects of these deficiencies in such infants. OBJECTIVE: Determine the association between neonatal feeding regimens and post-discharge morbidity/ mortality and neurological abnormalities at the age of two years for a cohort of VLBW infants. DESIGN: Prospective Cohort. METHODS: One hundred and seventy five VLBW infants were recru

[Prevention and treatment of acute diarrhea in infants].

The prognosis of acute diarrhoea in infants is most often satisfactory in industrialized countries. However, it has been estimated that 10 to 15 children die every year in France from acute dehydration due to acute diarrhoea. In spite of an increasing use over the least few years, oral rehydration solutions (ORS) are used in only 70% of infants presenting with acute diarrhoea. The use of homemade ORS, plain water or fizzy drink should be strictly avoided. In case of acute diarrhoea there is no indication to stop breastfeeding or the use of infant formula for more than 4 hours. Lactose intolera…

beta-Glucuronidase and hyperbilirubinaemia in breast-fed and formula-fed babies.

Breast milk or formula milk and serum samples from 34 breast-fed babies, 15 formula-fed babies, and their mothers were examined at 3 and 21 days of neonatal age. Infant faecal samples were obtained on day 21 only. At both ages serum total bilirubin concentrations were significantly higher in breast-fed than in formula-fed infants. Beta-glucuronidase activity in formula milk was negligible while that in human milk was considerable. Day 21 faecal beta-glucuronidase was higher in the breast-fed babies. In the breast-fed babies, serum bilirubin levels were related to concentrations of beta-glucuro

A Survey to Identify the Current Management of Cow's Milk Disorders and the Role of Goat Milk-Based Formulas in the Middle East and North Africa Region.

BACKGROUND: Cow's milk allergy (CMA) and cow's milk intolerance (CMI) are the major cow's milk disorders observed in infants and young children. This study investigates, for the first time, physician knowledge regarding CMA and CMI prevalence, diagnosis, and management in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. In addition, we explore the role of goat milk-based formula as an alternative in infants suffering from CMI. METHOD: This cross-sectional survey was conducted from December 2020 to February 2021. A convenience sample of 2500 MENA-based physicians received the questionnaire, dev

Dietary interventions for primary allergy prevention--what is the evidence?

Allergen exposure in the early postnatal life of an infant with a genetic predisposition for allergy is regarded as at least one essential risk factor for later development of allergic diseases. The most important allergen exposure in early life derives from the early nutrition of the baby. Thus, intervention based on the concept of reducing the allergen load in the diet is one approach for primary allergy prevention in children at risk. This includes breastfeeding, allergen-reduced diet of the pregnant and lactating mother, cow milk protein hydrolysate infant formulas (= hypoallergenic infant…

Effectiveness of casein hydrolysate feedings in infants with colic.

This study found that two casein hydrolysate formulas varying in composition were equally effective in managing colicky symptoms associated with protein sensitivity. Both hydrolysate formulas were associated with a significant, comparable reduction in crying duration and intensity from baseline in 15 of 22 infants with complete data. Subsequent challenge data suggest that the population studied were infants experiencing colicky symptoms due to protein sensitivity. A greater proportion of infants showed a positive reaction (> or = 1.5 h of crying/d) to the protein challenges than the placebo ch

Impact of Gestational Hypothyroidism on Exclusive Breastfeeding in the Early Postnatal Period.

BACKGROUND: Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) provides health benefits, yet its continuation remains limited. Maternal endocrine disorders, including gestational hypothyroidism, may impair lactogenesis through hormonal dysregulation; however, evidence regarding the association between gestational hypothyroidism and breastfeeding outcomes remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between maternal gestational hypothyroidism and breastfeeding outcomes in term infants, with a focus on EBF at the end of the first month and formula-free breast milk feeding at 6 months. METHODS: This r

Prevalence and outcome of allergic colitis in healthy infants with rectal bleeding: a prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: Allergic colitis is often diagnosed clinically in healthy infants with rectal bleeding and often treated with costly hypoallergenic formula. The true prevalence of allergic colitis is unknown. We tested the hypothesis that allergic colitis is overdiagnosed in healthy infants with rectal bleeding. The authors also determined whether rectal bleeding in infants without allergic colitis would resolve without diet change. METHODS: For the purposes of this study, allergic colitis was defined histologically as colonic mucosa with >or= 6 eosinophils per high power field and/or eosinophils

Postnatal weight loss in substitute methadone-exposed infants: implications for the management of breast feeding.

It is widely accepted that maternal drug-exposed infants demonstrate excessive early weight loss, but this has not previously been quantified. Among 354 term, substitute methadone-exposed infants, median maximal weight losses were 10.2% and 8.5% for breast- and formula-fed infants, respectively (p=0.003). Weight loss was less in small for gestational age compared to appropriately grown infants (p<0.001). There was no association between maximal weight loss and plasma sodium concentration (p=0.807). Relative to non-drug exposed infants, weight loss was more marked in formula-fed infants, 48% of

Response of severe infantile diarrhoea to soya-based feeds.

Ongoing acute diarrhoea in infancy may respond to a change from a cows' milk to a soya-based formula. This is usually ascribed to the change in carbohydrate content of the feed but the ideal carbohydrate composition of the soya feed is uncertain. Twenty infants with severe watery diarrhoea persisting 2 days after initial rehydration and refeeding with a cows' milk formula were randomly allocated to one of two soya-based formulas. In one the carbohydrate was a mixture of sucrose and glucose polymers and in the other all the carbohydrate glucose polymers. No advantage was noted for either formul
