Infections in AIDS patients.

In the absence of a specific diagnostic test for AIDS, a case can be recognized only when complications of the immune deficiency such as opportunistic infections or Kaposi's sarcoma occur. Defective T-cell function is the principal immunological defect; however, there are defects in B-cell function which may have some clinical significance. It has not been possible to reverse the immunological deficiency in AIDS patients. These patients remain susceptible to a succession of infections to which they ultimately succumb. Effective treatment is available for many of the infectious complications of…

Transfusion-associated cytomegalovirus infections.

The role of blood and blood products in the acquisition of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections following transfusion is reviewed. Considerable circumstantial data strongly suggest that primary infection and reactivation or reinfection with CMV occur frequently after transfusion. The incidence of these infections appears related both to the number of donors and to the volume of blood received by a patient. CMV infection following transfusion is most likely secondary to reactivation of latent virus either in donor white blood cells or host tissues. Recent studies of neonatal CMV infections acquired…

Rifampin in chlamydial infections.

On a weight basis, rifampin is the antibiotic most active against Chlamydia trachomatis. Because of concerns about the ease with which resistance to rifampin emerges in vitro, few clinical trials of rifampin for the treatment of human chlamydial infections have been done. In those few studies, however, rifampin has been found to be as effective as tetracyclines for the treatment of C. trachomatis infection of the male urethra or for the topical treatment of trachoma.

Legionella infections in Scotland.

Four thousand two hundred and thirty-five sera from 2794 patients and 740 sera from 735 tourists domiciled in Scotland recently returned from abroad were examined between 1977 and 1981 for antibodies to Legionella pneumophila and related organisms. In addition, specimens were examined from some patients for cultural or serological demonstration of these organisms in lung or sputum. One hundred and ten cases were diagnosed, 104 serologically, five by immunofluorescence demonstration of legionellas in lung biopsy or autopsy specimens and L. pneumophila serogroup 1 was isolated from a further cas

Mycobacterial infections in animals.

Mycobacteria other than mammalian tubercle bacilli are capable of producing disease in a wide range of animal hosts. Serotypes of Mycobacterium avium complex cause the most important mycobacterial diseases in domestic animals. Although disease is most common in lymph nodes, a wide variety of tissues may be involved, including tissue from spleen, liver, lungs, kidney, central nervous system, gall bladder, intestinal mucosa, skeletal system, ovaries, and the skin.
