Development and psychometric validation of the perinatal depression help-seeking intention (PNDHSI) scale.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal depression affects maternal and infant well-being, yet many women do not seek help. Existing measures focus on attitudes towards professional help or were developed for general populations, leaving perinatal-specific help-seeking intention insufficiently assessed. OBJECTIVE: To develop and psychometrically validate a scale based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) for assessing help-seeking intention (HSI) related to perinatal depressive symptoms. METHODS: A literature review and the TPB informed the initial item pool. Two Delphi rounds with 19 experts assessed cont

[The naked king in the pandemic: about the production and communication of scientific knowledge at the time of SARS-CoV-2.].

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has lifted the veil about how medical knowledge is produced and disseminated. Action Bias, together with economic, academic and media-related interests, has concurred to generate and spread low-value and even unreliable information about some hypothetical therapeutic interventions for CoViD-19. Not only this "infodemic" has weakened people's ability to make informed health choices, but it also has influenced the process of new evidence generation through the violation of the equipoise principle. The CoViD-19 infodemic has further highlighted the need for reliable health

Self-reported help-seeking behaviors and treatment choices of adolescents regarding acne.

Acne vulgaris is a common condition affecting adolescents that they often choose to treat on their own rather than seek out and follow medical advice. Using data from an anonymous survey administered to 1,214 students in public middle and high schools in New Jersey, we compared the self-reported acne frequency, severity, and beliefs of students based on their help-seeking behaviors, treatment choices, and treatment adherence. Chi-square analyses were performed for data comparison. A large proportion of students in this sample (57%) treated their own acne, and a much smaller proportion (17%) ha

Understanding malaria resurgence in the Amhara Region, northwestern Ethiopia: a qualitative study of perceived drivers from stakeholder and community perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia has experienced a marked resurgence of malaria, with confirmed cases rising from 1.0 million in 2018 to more than 7.3 million by October 2024. This resurgence is particularly pronounced in the Amhara Region and threatens national elimination goals. This study explored perceived drivers and contextual determinants of malaria resurgence from the perspectives of frontline health workers and community members in the Amhara Region. METHODS: Between 1 and 28 February 2025, we conducted 28 semi-structured key informant interviews, two focus group discussions (n = 20), and 12 in-d

Amygdala inputs to prefrontal cortex guide behavior amid conflicting cues of reward and punishment.

Orchestrating appropriate behavioral responses in the face of competing signals that predict either rewards or threats in the environment is crucial for survival. The basolateral nucleus of the amygdala (BLA) and prelimbic (PL) medial prefrontal cortex have been implicated in reward-seeking and fear-related responses, but how information flows between these reciprocally connected structures to coordinate behavior is unknown. We recorded neuronal activity from the BLA and PL while rats performed a task wherein competing shock- and sucrose-predictive cues were simultaneously presented. The corre

Treatment histories, barriers, and preferences for individuals with symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a prevalent and chronic mental health condition, associated with considerable individual and economic burden. Despite the availability of effective treatments, many individuals do not access support. The current study explores treatment histories, barriers to help-seeking, and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) treatment preferences for individuals with clinically significant GAD symptoms. The utility of Health Belief Model (HBM) in predicting help-seeking is also examined. A cross-sectional design with 127 participants (Mage = 29.17; SD = 11.86; 80.3% fem

Engagement in a Novel Internet Intervention for Alcohol Reduction: A Qualitative Study of User Motivations and Experiences.

Internet interventions are effective in reducing alcohol consumption, but little is known regarding their acceptability. We aimed to inform recruitment and retention strategies by exploring users' motivations and experiences in using a novel, Internet intervention, the Hello Sunday Morning (HSM) program. We conducted one-to-one, telephone-enabled qualitative interviews with 24 adult users of HSM (50 percent female; Mage = 42.42 years), purposively selected to ensure diversity in demographics and drinking levels. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Two themes, each with two subthemes we

Seeking insights about cycling mood disorders via anonymized search logs.

BACKGROUND: Mood disorders affect a significant portion of the general population. Cycling mood disorders are characterized by intermittent episodes (or events) of the disease. OBJECTIVE: Using anonymized Web search logs, we identify a population of people with significant interest in mood stabilizing drugs (MSD) and seek evidence of mood swings in this population. METHODS: We extracted queries to the Microsoft Bing search engine made by 20,046 Web searchers over six months, separately explored searcher demographics using data from a large external panel of users, and sought supporting infor

The Relationships Between Social Media and Human Papillomavirus Awareness and Knowledge: Cross-sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection. HPV can infect both females and males, and it can cause many cancers, including anal, cervical, vaginal, vulvar, and penile cancers. HPV vaccination rates are lower than vaccination rates within other national vaccination programs, despite its importance. Research literature indicates that people obtain health-related information from internet sources and social media; however, the association between such health-seeking behavior on social media and HPV-related behaviors has not been consistently demonstr

Influence of Physician Behaviors on How Patients Interpret Normal Test Results.

PURPOSE: Reassuring patients that nothing serious is wrong is one of the most common interventions in family medicine. However, medical reassurance can sometimes fail, and it is not yet clear what role the doctor's behavior plays in this regard. We tested the preregistered hypothesis that a doctor's warmth and competence significantly and independently influence patients' responses to normal results from diagnostic testing. METHODS: We used an online convenience sample reporting medium somatic symptom burden (N = 349, mean age 29.9 years, 79% female) and completed an experimental analog study

Mental Health Beyond Conflict: Cultural and Structural Barriers to Psychiatric Care in Somalia.

Mental health challenges in Somalia are shaped by a complex interaction between fragile healthcare infrastructure and sociocultural factors influencing psychiatric care utilization. This commentary critically examines how stigma, spiritual and supernatural interpretations of mental illness, informal healing systems, limited mental health literacy, and severe shortages of psychiatric services shape help-seeking behaviors and access to formal mental healthcare in Somalia. In many Somali communities, mental illness may be interpreted through frameworks involving jinn possession, the evil eye, and

What do suicide survivors tell us they need? Results of a pilot study.

Few studies have examined the natural coping efforts used by suicide survivors, or have identified specific problems and needs survivors experience following the death of a significant other by suicide. In the present study, we used a newly developed needs assessment survey to examine four areas of natural coping efforts: practical, psychological, and social difficulties; formal and informal sources of support; resources utilized in healing; and barriers to finding support since the loss. Sixty-three adult survivors of suicide were recruited from suicide survivor conferences and support groups
