Are Maternal and Neonatal Death Reviews a Feasible Approach to Study Gaps in Care: Findings from a Case Study.

Reducing maternal and neonatal mortality is a global priority, yet the processes for retrieving and using death review data remain unclear. This study examined the practicality of collecting and applying maternal and neonatal death review information to assess care quality and identify gaps. We conducted a mixed-methods study in two districts in India (District A in Telangana and District B in Gujarat), reviewing records of 10 maternal and 10 neonatal deaths that occurred between April 2020 and March 2021. Data were extracted to assess completeness, and field notes documented operational chall

The influence of adrenergic receptor antagonists on the amnestic and antiamnestic actions of adrenaline and tyramine.

The posttraining IP administration of adrenaline (epinephrine) HCl (5.0 micrograms/kg) or tyramine HCl (1.0 mg/kg) causes retrograde amnesia for a one-way step-down inhibitory avoidance task in rats. The effect is cancelled by the simultaneous injection of the alpha 2-adrenergic receptor antagonist yohimbine HCl (2.0 mg/kg) or of the beta 1 - beta 2 blocker propranolol HCl (2.0 mg/kg). The amnestic effect of posttraining adrenaline or tyramine is counteracted by the administration of adrenaline or tyramine prior to testing: each drug has a greater antiamnestic effect against itself than agains

One-Step Stochastically-Assembled Copper(I) Iodide Cluster for Multimodal Physically Unclonable Functions.

The rapid development of the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence has sharply increased the demand for secure, low-cost, and scalable anticounterfeiting technologies. Physical unclonable functions (PUFs) offer intrinsic protection by converting stochastic material variations into unique identifiers, but their practical implementation is often limited by complex fabrication, toxic luminophores, and low information complexity arising from single-channel readout. Here, we develop a copper(I) iodide cluster-poly(methyl methacrylate) fluorescent PUF through a single ambient coating step.

Posthumous sperm retrieval in the context of armed conflict.

STUDY QUESTION: What are the clinical and logistical predictors of sperm viability in posthumous sperm retrieval (PHSR), and how do post-mortem interval (PMI), body refrigeration, and mechanism of death affect outcomes? SUMMARY ANSWER: Shorter PMI and body refrigeration significantly enhance post-mortem sperm viability, with the mechanism of death modulating viability patterns in a time-dependent manner. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: PHSR has gained increasing prominence in reproductive medicine, yet technical aspects remain under-researched. Key questions regarding optimal timing, storage conditio

Release of zirconia nanoparticles at the metal stem-bone cement interface in implant loosening of total hip replacements.

UNLABELLED: In a previous failure analysis performed on femoral components of cemented total hip replacements, we determined high volumes of abraded bone cement. Here, we describe the topography of the polished surface of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) bone cement containing zirconia radiopacifier, analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and vertical scanning interferometry. Zirconia spikes protruded about 300nm from the PMMA matrix, with pits of former crystal deposition measuring about 400nm in depth. We deduced that the characteristically mulberry-shaped agglomerates of zirconia crystals a

Factors that influence the quality of metabolomics data in in vitro cell toxicity studies: a systematic survey.

REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) is a global strategy and regulation policy of the EU that aims to improve the protection of human health and the environment through the better and earlier identification of the intrinsic properties of chemical substances. It entered into force on 1st June 2007 (EC 1907/2006). REACH and EU policies plead for the use of robust high-throughput "omic" techniques for the in vitro investigation of the toxicity of chemicals that can provide an estimation of their hazards as well as information regarding the underlying mecha

The balance between Bayesian inference and default mode determines the generation of tinnitus from decreased auditory input: A volume entropy-based study.

Along with phantom pain, tinnitus, a phantom auditory perception occurring in the absence of an external acoustic stimulus, is one of the most representative phantom perceptions that develops in subjects with decreased peripheral sensory input. Although tinnitus is closely associated with peripheral hearing loss (HL), it remains unclear why only some individuals with HL develop tinnitus. In this study, we investigated the differences between 65 HL with tinnitus (HL-T) and 104 HL with no tinnitus (HL-NT) using a resting-state electroencephalography data-based volume entropy model of the brain n

[Neuropsychological impairment in the early Alzheimer's disease].

This analysis is centered on the study of cognitive disorders in Alzheimer's disease (AD), mainly for major neuro-psychological functions. We insist on the heterogeneity of the clinical picture peculiarly in the early stages of the illness, even if the deficits of episodic memory and of attentional/executive capacities are the first to deteriorate, preceding impairment in perceptual and language function and potentially having a substantial impact on the patient's capacity to cope independently. An episodic memory deficit is the hallmark of AD, but it must be stressed that this deficit may tak

Recurrent episodes of oral mite anaphylaxis in a dog.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical presentation and response to management of a dog with presumed oral mite anaphylaxis. CASE SUMMARY: A 2-year-old male intact Golden Retriever was evaluated for a history of recurrent anaphylactic episodes. Over a period of 19 months, the dog had a total of 8 anaphylactic episodes that occurred in 2 different residences within the same state. The episodes most commonly resulted in vomiting and labored breathing, but the dog developed ascites, hypotension, and gall bladder wall edema during the most severe episodes. Serological testing demonstrated high immun

Vaccine adverse events in a safety net healthcare system and a managed care organization.

BACKGROUND: The Institute of Medicine, in a 2013 report, recommended that the Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD) expand collaborations to include more diversity in the study population. Kaiser Permanente Colorado (KPCO), an established VSD site, partnered with Denver Health (DH), an integrated safety net healthcare system, to demonstrate the feasibility of integrating DH data within the VSD. Prior to incorporating the data, we examined the identification of specific vaccine associated adverse events (VAEs) in these two distinct healthcare systems. METHODS: We conducted retrospective cohort analyse

Methodologic Considerations for Quantitative 18F-FDG PET/CT Studies of Hepatic Glucose Metabolism in Healthy Subjects.

UNLABELLED: PET with the glucose analog (18)F-FDG is used to measure regional tissue metabolism of glucose. However, (18)F-FDG may have affinities different from those of glucose for plasma membrane transporters and intracellular enzymes; the lumped constant (LC) can be used to correct these differences kinetically. The aims of this study were to investigate the feasibility of measuring human hepatic glucose metabolism with dynamic (18)F-FDG PET/CT and to determine an operational LC for (18)F-FDG by comparison with (3)H-glucose measurements. METHODS: Eight healthy human subjects were included

Sex Differences in the Association Between Birth Weight and Adult Type 2 Diabetes.

Low birth weight is a well-established risk factor for type 2 diabetes, but the risk at high birth weight levels remains uncertain. Potential sex differences in the associations are unexplored. We investigated whether sex influences the association of birth weight and adult type 2 diabetes, using a cohort of 113,801 men and 109,298 women, born 1936-1983, from the Copenhagen School Health Records Register, Denmark. During 5.6 million person-years of follow-up, 7,750 men and 4,736 women had a diagnosis of adult type 2 diabetes (30 years of age or older) obtained from national registers. When bir

Utilisation of alcohol-related treatment after a first alcohol use disorder diagnosis in Hamburg, Germany.

BACKGROUND: A variety of treatment options for people with alcohol use disorder (AUD) exist. Surveys estimate that 1 in 10 people with AUD utilise treatment, but real-world treatment pathways remain covert. This data-linkage study seeks to characterise treatment utilisation patterns to identify gaps in treatment access and delivery in Germany. METHODS: Linking individual-level data from three sources (statutory health insurance, pension funds, outpatient addiction care services) identified seven alcohol-related treatment types delivered in outpatient (brief psychiatric consultation; formal ps

Cohort profile: a data linkage cohort to examine health service profiles of people with intellectual disability in New South Wales, Australia.

PURPOSE: People with intellectual disability are a minority group who experience poorer physical and mental health than the general population and have difficulty accessing healthcare services. There is lack of knowledge about healthcare service needs and gaps experienced by people with intellectual disability. This study aims to interrogate a large linked administrative data set containing hospital admissions, presentations to emergency departments (ED) and mortality data to provide evidence to inform the development of improved health and mental health services for this population. A method to improve visual similarity of breast masses for an interactive computer-aided diagnosis environment.

The purpose of this study was to develop and test a method for selecting "visually similar" regions of interest depicting breast masses from a reference library to be used in an interactive computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) environment. A reference library including 1000 malignant mass regions and 2000 benign and CAD-generated false-positive regions was established. When a suspicious mass region is identified, the scheme segments the region and searches for similar regions from the reference library using a multifeature based k-nearest neighbor (KNN) algorithm. To improve selection of reference i

Atlas-based segmentation of pathological MR brain images using a model of lesion growth.

We propose a method for brain atlas deformation in the presence of large space-occupying tumors, based on an a priori model of lesion growth that assumes radial expansion of the lesion from its starting point. Our approach involves three steps. First, an affine registration brings the atlas and the patient into global correspondence. Then, the seeding of a synthetic tumor into the brain atlas provides a template for the lesion. The last step is the deformation of the seeded atlas, combining a method derived from optical flow principles and a model of lesion growth. Results show that a good reg
