In recent decades, the increasingly widespread application of chemical pesticides has exacerbated the emergence of insecticide resistance among insect pests. In this study, we examined the rapid response of bacteria in the midgut of the fruit fly Bactrocera tau (Walker) (Diptera: Tephritidae) to stress induced by the insecticides lambda-cyhalothrin and spinosad by analyzing the bacterial community structure and diversity in the midguts of 4-day-old B. tau. The results revealed that 4-day-old B. tau females were more resistant to lambda-cyhalothrin and spinosad than their 4-day-old male counter…

Bovines are suitable hosts and can be affected by fly infestations. Flies pose a significant threat to cattle livestock in Latin America (LA), causing substantial economic repercussions to animal production (reduced productivity, veterinary expenses, and decreased animal welfare) and damage to human health. The most important flies affecting cattle in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, and Uruguay are Haematobia irritans, Dermatobia hominis, and Cochliomyia hominivorax. Due to production losses and the consequent economic costs associated with these flies, control measures must be implemente

Vector-borne diseases account for 17% of all infectious diseases. The most effective strategies for controlling these diseases have focused on decreasing the vector population, primarily through the use of insecticides. Many insecticides have no specific targets, harming pollinators and beneficial insects. Additionally, the vector populations are developing resistance, reducing the effectiveness of these strategies and increasing ecological damage. Double-strand RNA (dsRNA) is widely used in insects to study gene function by knocking down their expression. Recently, this technology has been ap

The cotton leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is an economically important pest in Egypt. This study examines the inheritance patterns, potential for resistance development, and fitness costs associated with chlorantraniliprole (CHL) resistance in S. littoralis. Laboratory selection over 15 generations resulted in a substantial resistance level, with a resistance ratio of 402.85-fold. Genetic analysis, including reciprocal crosses and backcrosses, revealed that CHL resistance is autosomal, polygenic, and exhibits incomplete dominance. The estimated realized heri

Regular evaluations of larvicide resistance and operational control effectiveness are two basic components of the Integrated Mosquito Management approach. It is therefore important for mosquito control programs to assess both the efficacy and the effectiveness of larvicide treatments. Recent observations in 2023 and 2024 within areas served by the Northwest Mosquito Abatement District (NWMAD) indicated that methoprene resistance categorized as high and extreme exist in populations of Culex pipiens (L). Despite more than 20 years of exclusive use of Altosid® XR (2.1% methoprene) larvicide in NW

Chilo suppressalis Walker (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) is one of the most destructive pests occurring in the rice-growing regions of Asia. Parasitoids, mainly egg parasitoids, have been of interest for several years even with practical used cases. Therefore, the potential impact of insecticides on natural enemies needs great attention. In this study, chlorantraniliprole was evaluated for its impact on C. suppressalis and two dominant parasitic wasps. Bioassays showed that chlorantraniliprole had negligible toxicity to Eriborus terebrans but was significantly toxic to Chelonus munakatae; the mortal

We previously extracted and purified a chromene amide from Amyris texana and found this scaffold is moderately insecticidal and thus, this study aimed to test the insecticidal properties of 13 synthetically derived chromene analogs to the fall armyworm (FAW, Spodoptera frugiperda). Microinjection of chromenes with alcohol or aldehydes substitutions at the meta position on the benzopyran moiety led to moderate toxicity that was approximately 2- to 3-fold less toxic when compared to permethrin, yet microinjection of differently substituted chromenes exhibited little to no toxicity. Similarly, ch

BACKGROUND: The sustainable control of the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), is compromised by the development of resistance to malathion and lambda-cyhalothrin in Spanish field populations. At present, field populations remain susceptible to spinosad. However, the resistant strain JW-100s has been obtained under laboratory selection with spinosad, and resistance has been associated with the presence of different mutations causing truncated transcripts of the α6 subunit of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChRα6).
RESULTS: An F1 screen assay followed by the molecu

The objective of the present study was to determine simultaneously the status of resistance against ivermectin (IVM) in gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) and Rhipicephalus microplus (Canestrini, 1888) ticks in 12 cattle farms where IVM was used for the control of GIN in the Mexican tropics. Six farms had frequent use of IVM (≥ 4 times per year) and six farms had low frequency of IVM use (1-2 times per year). The fecal egg count reduction test and the larval immersion test were used to determine the resistant status of GIN and R. microplus against IVM, respectively. The results indicated that 10

A field-collected strain (HF) of Plutella xylostella (L.) showed 420-fold resistance to fipronil compared with a susceptible laboratory strain (Roth). The HF-R strain, derived from the HF strain by 25 generations of successive selection with fipronil in the laboratory, developed 2,200-fold resistance to fipronil relative to the Roth strain. The F(1) progeny of the reciprocal crosses between HF-R and Roth showed 640-fold (R♀ × S♂) and 1,380-fold (R♂ × S♀) resistance to fipronil, indicating resistance is inherited as an incompletely dominant trait. Analysis of progeny from a backcross (F1♂ × S♀)

BACKGROUND: The TH-Abm strain of Plutella xylostella, exhibiting 23 670-fold resistance to abamectin, was selected from a field-evolved multiresistant population. By repeated backcrossing to a susceptible strain (Roth) and selection with abamectin, the resistance trait of TH-Abm was introgressed into Roth to generate a near-isogenic strain (Roth-Abm). Fitness costs associated with abamectin resistance were examined in Roth-Abm.
RESULTS: Compared with Roth, Roth-Abm obtained 11 500-fold resistance to abamectin and 364 000-, 12- and 12-fold cross-resistance to emamectin benzoate, spinosad and f

The New World Screwworm (NWS) fly Cochliomyia hominivorax is one of most important myiasis-causing flies in the Neotropics. It is responsible for severe losses to the livestock industry through both mortality and the loss of productivity of infested animals. In Uruguay, NWS represents a significant problem. To date this pest has been controlled by the application of chemical insecticides, mainly the pyrethroid and organophosphate (OP) classes. However, the intensive use of these compounds over many years has led to the evolution of resistance which has the potential to compromise the effective

Populations of the yellow-fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, have developed resistance to cholorinated hydrocarbons in many parts of the world, but not to organophosphorus insecticides. Seven Indian strains of Ae. aegypti were found to be tolerant to DDT and highly susceptible to certain organophosphorus compounds such as Abate, Dursban, fenthion and fenitrothion. Hence selection studies were started with these organophosphorus compounds. Laboratory selections on these strains for 20 generations with Abate, Dursban, malathion, fenthion and fenitrothion increased the tolerance of the F(20) larvae t

Insecticide misuse has caused pest resistance, stressing the need for novel pesticides. The isoxazoline structure offers broad-spectrum effectiveness, mammalian safety, and no cross-resistance. Developing efficient insecticides with this scaffold remains challenging. Based on the lead compound L17, 31 novel isoxazoline compounds with benzamide were made and evaluated for insecticidal efficacy and mechanisms, all showing efficacy against Plutella xylostella. Especially, M31, designed based on the three-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship (3D-QSAR), displayed activity with L

The diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.), is one of the most destructive pests of cruciferous crops worldwide. This pest has gained notoriety due to its high dispersal ability, substantial number of generations per year, and high potential to develop resistance to various classes of insecticides. Current management practices for diamondback moth in cabbage rely heavily on chemical control. However, increasing resistance to insecticides and concerns about nontarget effects underscore the need for alternative pest management tools. The attractiveness of product code ISR: PLT-008A1, a semio
