A methodologic approach to crisis therapy.

Resistance to using limited goal, brief psychotherapy often rests upon the mythology that a patient's problems must require a great deal of time for resolution. This paper offers a suitable rationale and methodology for psychotherapists to exercise their enormous capacity to assist patients effecting meaningful change in a brief time period.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in war: a comprehensive review of subtypes, risk and protective factors, and therapeutic approaches.

BACKGROUND: War-related trauma is associated with substantial mental health burden, particularly post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD (cPTSD). These presentations often co-occur with depression, anxiety, traumatic brain injury, sleep disturbance, functional impairment, and moral injury, complicating assessment and treatment. Despite growing research on trauma in conflict-affected populations, recent evidence remains uneven across active-duty personnel, veterans, civilians, refugees, internally displaced persons, and children. METHODS: Studies published in English between 202

Embodied neuroaesthetics and the psychotherapeutic relational field.

Aesthetic experiences are bodily-anchored, posited to evoke profound emotional responses and advance development, mental health and well-being. This paper reviews and conceptually analyzes the embodied aesthetic experience and its imperative contribution to the psychotherapeutic relational field, by integratively and interdisciplinarity interweaving neuroscientific and psychodynamic approaches and concepts. Contemporary neuroaesthetics and predictive processing frameworks describe aesthetic experiences as a fertile interplay between anticipation and surprise, in which fluctuations in uncertain

Change in psychosocial target processes during prenatal depression intervention: A randomized clinical trial.

Prenatal depression is one of the most common obstetric complications. Psychotherapies alleviate depression during pregnancy, yet less is known about which psychosocial processes are changed during treatment and which psychotherapeutic targets associate with depression symptom improvement. This study addressed these questions using data from a prospective randomized clinical trial (RCT). Adult pregnant individuals, randomized to brief Interpersonal Therapy (IPT; n = 115; age M=29.7 [5.9] years) or active comparison condition of Enhanced Usual Care (EUC; n = 119; M=30.1 [5.9] years) which inclu

Psychedelics for the Treatment of Substance Use Disorders: A Narrative Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: There is an increasing interest in the use of psychedelics for the treatment of substance use disorders (SUDs) and to improve overall health and wellbeing. We aimed to update and complement research syntheses that have focused only on results from clinical trials by synthesizing the research across diverse methods to discuss implications from a broad and multi-faceted literature. METHODS: We conducted a narrative review of research focused on substance use and SUDs and both classic and non-classic/atypical psychedelics published between 1990 and 2025, synthesizing the evi

Efficacy of high-intensity versus low-intensity psychoanalytically oriented long-term treatments and determinants of outcome: individual participant data Meta-analysis of Long-term Analytic treatment Studies (MeLAS).

INTRODUCTION: Long-term psychodynamic/psychoanalytic psychotherapy (LTPP) is a prevalent treatment option for complex mental disorders. Yet, little is known about the role of treatment intensity in LTPP. We present a study protocol for a systematic review and individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis aggregating and analysing individual data from randomised and quasi-experimental trials by meta-analysis. The purpose is to (1) determine the treatment effectiveness of LTPP with low versus high intensity (up to 2 weekly sessions vs three or more), (2) compare their joint effectiveness to sh

MOSAIC (MOthers' AdvocateS In the Community) for pregnant women and mothers of children under 5 with experience of intimate partner violence: A pilot randomized trial study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy and motherhood increase the risk for long-term exposure to physical, psychological and sexual intimate partner violence (IPV; sexual or physical violence by current or former partners). Pregnant women and mothers with children under 5 who have experienced IPV exhibit poor physical and mental health and obstetric outcomes. Depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are the two most common mental health consequences of IPV. There is good evidence that women with good social support have better mental health and IPV outcomes. METHODS: This study will develop MOther

The "common" experience of voice-hearing and its relationship with shame and guilt: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Despite Auditory Verbal Hallucinations (AVHs) having been long associated with mental illness, they represent a common experience also in the non-clinical population, yet do not exhibit distress or need for care. Shame and guilt are emotions related to one's perception of oneself and one's responsibility. As such, they direct our attention to aspects of AVHs that are under-researched and elusive, particularly about the status of voices as others, their social implications and the constitution and conceptualisation of the self. OBJECTIVES: This paper aims to provide a systematic re

Specialized post-inpatient psychotherapy for sustained recovery in anorexia nervosa via videoconference - study protocol of the randomized controlled SUSTAIN trial.

BACKGROUND: A major barrier to long-term recovery from anorexia nervosa (AN) are early and frequent relapses after inpatient treatment. There is an urgent need for enhanced continuity of specialized care involving effective aftercare interventions and relapse prevention strategies in order to improve the long-term outcome for patients with AN. METHODS: SUSTAIN is a multi-center, prospective, randomized-controlled trial investigating the efficacy of a novel post-inpatient aftercare intervention for patients with AN as compared to optimized treatment-as-usual (TAU-O). The SUSTAIN aftercare inte

[Emotional hyper-reactivity and sleep disturbances in remitted patients with bipolar disorders].

INTRODUCTION: Emotional reactivity and sleep constitute key dimensions of bipolar disorder. Emotional reactivity referred to emotion response intensity and emotion response threshold. Higher emotion reactivity is described during both mood episodes and periods of remission in bipolar disorder. As well, sleep disturbances are described during both acute episodes and euthymic periods in bipolar disorder. Links between sleep and emotion regulation start to be studied in general population. Interactions between sleep and emotion systems can rely on shared neuronal structures, which involve limbic

Cognitive behavioural therapy plus Kiesler Circle Training (CBT+) versus CBT only for patients with interpersonal problems: study protocol for a randomised controlled feasibility trial.

INTRODUCTION: Interpersonal problems are a transdiagnostic risk factor for the development and maintenance of various psychiatric disorders, including anxiety and depression. Interventions that address these interpersonal challenges could therefore play a crucial role in enhancing mental health. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and feasibility of a transdiagnostic group intervention, the Kiesler Circle Training (KCT), in improving interpersonal skills. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: In a prospective randomised controlled trial (RCT), 156 outpatients with a primary diagnosis of either depressio

Toward a transactional conceptualization of oppositional defiant disorder: implications for assessment and treatment.

The conceptualization and treatment of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) has been characterized by surprising homogeneity. In this paper evidence is presented to underscore the heterogeneity within ODD, including research demonstrating (a) the distinction between reactive and proactive forms of aggression; (b) the importance of affective modulation and self-regulation, and associated cognitive skills, in the development of the skill of compliance; and (c) high levels of comorbidity between ODD and other disorders. The disparate pathways that give rise to oppositional behavior suggest that di

Role-relationship models for case formulation.

BACKGROUND: Personality disorders are important because they occur frequently and often complicate psychiatric symptom disorders. They are difficult to diagnose and formulate because unitary core traits and themes are hard to define for individual patients. A multiple-selves approach helps clinicians define core contradictions in belief that are frequently present. METHOD: A configurational system for case formulation was used with an approach of states and person schemas. Transactions and stories involving self and others were observed for recurrent elements of identity, attribution, and act
