A technique for the double contrast method was described which was used in our radiology institute on 2400 patients. It takes into account economic factors (amount of film used) as well as the lowest possible radiation exposure (mean screening time: 6.4 minutes). Typical lesions from malignant processes in the colon were illustrated. Today, radiographic examination of the colon should be conducted only with the double contrast method. Mucosal malignant melanomas are uncommon. It is rare for a primary mucosal melanoma to occur in the anorectal region. Anorectal polypoid mucosal prolapse however, is a relatively common condition. We report a case of malignant melanoma presenting as mucosal prolapse and inducing changes similar to inflammatory cloacogenic polyp.

The authors report a case of polypoid heterotopic gastric mucosa in the ileum presenting as intussusception with hypochromic anemia in a 6 year-old boy. Tumorous heterotopic gastric mucosa in the small bowel is very uncommon. So far 22 similar cases have been published in the literature. The presence of argyrophil cell was demonstrated in the adenomas of familial polyposis coli (FPC) with the Sevier-Munger method. Usually, argyrophil cells were distributed sparsely near the base of the crypts, rather close to the normal mucosa. But, adenomas with severe or moderate dysplasia did not contain argyrophil cells. A 64-year-old female presented with episodes of small bowel obstruction. Ultrasound and barium meal showed a polypoidal lesion in the proximal segment of small bowel. The patient underwent emergency surgery because of signs of impending acute intestinal obstruction. Pathology showed characteristics features of an inflammatory fibroid polyp (IFP) which is an important though rare benign cause of small bowel obstruction. We document clinical and pathological aspects of this case.

The authors present the case of a 60 year-old man known for a rectal polyp which was diagnosed in 1994 and since then followed-up by means of a colonoscopy associated with periodic biopsies. Recently, the results of a biopsy revealed positive markers for the diagnosis of Gastro-Intestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST). Despite the absence of malignant criteria, an anterior resection of the rectum was performed by laparoscopy and the patient rapidly recovered. Epidemiology, diagnosis and management of this rare location of GIST's are discussed.

The aim of the present report is to describe the overall mandibular and extramandibular lesions correlated to Gardner's syndrome which were found in the same family (mother and two daughters). In two cases (mother and one daughter) mandibular lesions consisted of osteoma. In the latter, these were associated with composite odontoma. In the other daughter the lesions consisted of desmoid fibroma. Among 1258 polyps from the lower gastro-intestinal tract removed by rectoscopy or coloscopy and examined histologically there were 744 adenomas, 72% tubular, 27% papillary and 1% villous. 96.5% of all adenomas were extracted from patients aged over 40 years. Four fifths of the tumours were found in the rectum and sigmoid colon. Only 6% of the tubular adenomas were more than 15 mm in diameter, compared with 32% of papillary and 57% of villous adenomas. The special significance of the adenomas lies in their potential malignancy (adenoma-to-cancer sequence).

A retrospective review of 637 consecutive colonoscopies with polypectomy in 526 patients was performed to determine the association of small polyps of the rectum and sigmoid colon with more proximal colonic neoplasms. All colonic polyps were proximal to the sigmoid colon in 117 procedures. Proximal neoplasms were found in 32 percent of patients with a single polyp in the rectum or sigmoid colon. The incidence increased to 83 percent for those with three or more polyps. The occurrence of proximal colonic neoplasms was not affected by the size or histologic type of the rectosigmoid polyps. Both colonoscopy and barium enema are important techniques for examining the colon for polyps and cancer. They are approximately equally sensitive in detecting polypoid lesions of 7 to 10 mm or larger. A major limitation of colonoscopy is that the cecum cannot be visualized in 10 to 36% of cases. The comparable accuracy for detecting significant lesions, greater safety, and greater cost-effectiveness of barium enema favor its use in most patients.

Generalized juvenile polyposis occurred in five patients (age range, 18 months to 16 years). Clinical findings included abdominal pain, weakness, rectal bleeding, diarrhea, rectal prolapse, intussusception, clubbing, and failure to thrive. Author's experience about 70 endoscopic polipectomy of high gastrointestinal tract, realized on 53 patients during 1978-1983 period was evaluated. Esophaguel polyps incidence was 0.06% among 7.900 endoscopic studies; gastric polyps was 0.8% and duodenal was 0.03%. Diagnosis was radiologically suspected in 58%. Gastric antrum was the predominant localization (45.7%) and macroscopic Yamada types IV (32.8%) and III (30.0%) were found more frequently. Early stages of adenomas and hyperplastic polyps are observed when the surface of mucous membrane from 76 surgically removed colons was examined under binocular microscope and when biopsies obtained by means of the endomicroscope were studied. A close link between adenomatous and hyperplastic polyps is established and this may indicate the involvement of the latter in carcinogenesis. Besides this, it is shown that epithelial dysplasia in the adenomas may spread to the goblet cells this being followed by the development of peculiar clear cell adenomas which are mainly formed of the goblet cells
