The lack of an accepted measure of awareness has made claims that accurate decisions can be made without awareness controversial. Here we introduce a new objective measure of awareness, post-decision wagering. From January 1970 to January 1979, 50 hips in 39 patients were operated on for congenital dislocation of the hip at the University of Iowa. Each hip was evaluated for acetabular development, aseptic necrosis and subluxation; arthrograms were correlated with intraoperative findings. Aseptic necrosis occurred in two patients (5%). Intraarticular obstacles to reduction are described. Acetabular development progressed rapidly once concentric reduction was obtained. We conducted two experiments with healthy subjects to investigate the possible relationships between Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) performance and executive functions as well as IGT performance and decision-making in a task with explicit rules, the Game of Dice Task (GDT). Results indicated that only the last trials of the IGT were correlated with executive functions and GDT performance. A 42-year follow-up of 76 women with Briquet's syndrome revealed no evidence of excess mortality. A carefully matched group of patients with primary unipolar depression had excess mortality in comparison both with the Briquet's syndrome group and with the Iowa population.
