BACKGROUND: The death of a baby is recognised as one of the most difficult bereavements with life-long impact for parents. How bereaved parents are cared for influences their grief journey. Optimal holistic care is provided when the physical, emotional, spiritual and social needs of parents are attended to. This prospective observational study reports on 126 women from 25 UK centres with image-proven antenatal venous thromboembolism (VTE), 62% deep vein thrombosis and 38% pulmonary embolism. Thrombophilia screening was of limited benefit except to identify antithrombin deficiency. The South-Eastern Health Board (SEHB) has the highest annual incidence of leptospirosis in the Republic of Ireland (12.3/million according to hospital inpatient enquiry data; 10.4/million by serology). Discharge diagnosis correlates strongly with numbers of cattle, but not of other livestock, which may indicate a true association with leptospirosis or may reflect an increased clinical suspicion in areas where livestock are prevalent.

A retrospective epidemiological study of Crohn's disease in Northern Ireland between 1966 and 1981 has been carried out. Using strict diagnostic criteria 440 cases were identified and aspects of the clinical presentation of the disease at initial diagnosis were examined. This paper describes the clinical pattern of the major symptoms of the disease and highlights the delay in diagnosis. Kidneys of cattle, mice and badgers were cultured for leptospires in an attempt to evaluate the relative importance of these species in the epidemiology of bovine leptospirosis caused by the Hebdomadis serogroup. Leptospires closely related to serotype hardjo were recovered from 57 (28.5 per cent) of 200 cattle examined but no evidence of infection was found in either badgers or mice, indicating that cattle act as the maintenance host for serotype hardjo.
