Evaluation of Reticulocyte Parameters in Iron Deficiency, Vitamin B12 Deficiency and Mixed Anemia.

BACKGROUND: Reticulocytes are the youngest erythrocytes released from the bone marrow into the blood and they circulate for 1-2 days before becoming mature erythrocytes. In literature, there were studies about reticulocyte parameters that could help in differentiation of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) from vitamin B12 deficiency anemia. However, in those studies there were no data about differentiation of mixed anemia (vitamin B12 deficiency and IDA). The purpose of this study is to explore a response to 'could reticulocyte parameters help in differential diagnosis of mixed anemia?' in 6-12 year

Nonanemic Iron Deficiency: Exercise Performance Recovery After Iron Repletion in Collegiate Athlete.

BACKGROUND: Exercise intolerance in athletes is often attributed to cardiopulmonary or autonomic causes; however, nonanemic iron deficiency is a common and under-recognized contributor that may hinder aerobic adaptation. Ferritin thresholds used in general populations do not reflect athletes' higher physiological iron requirements. CASE SUMMARY: A 21-year-old collegiate gymnast presented with exertional intolerance, positional lightheadedness, and tachycardia. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing showed reduced aerobic capacity (peak oxygen consumption: 25.5 mL/kg/min; 67% predicted). Iron studie

Hypophosphatemia in Patients Receiving Intravenous Iron Supplementation for Iron-Deficiency Anemia: A Narrative Review.

Intravenous (IV) iron is used to replenish iron stores in patients with iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) who do not benefit from oral iron supplementation. Hypophosphatemia is an increasingly recognized adverse event associated with certain IV iron formulations. Mild/moderate hypophosphatemia may be asymptomatic or present with symptoms similar to those seen in patients with IDA, including fatigue, malaise, and muscle weakness. Persistent hypophosphatemia can cause osteomalacia due to reduced bone mineralization, leading to bone pain and pseudofractures. Ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) can impact phos

Platelet levels before and after iron replacement therapy in patients with iron deficiency anemia.

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most common cause of anemia worldwide. Patients with IDA often present thrombocytosis, but little is known about its degree and prevalence, and its response to iron replacement. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of 76 consecutive patients with anemia secondary only to iron deficiency. Laboratory data were collected both at baseline and at 3 months after either oral or intravenous iron replacement therapy. We defined thrombocytosis as a platelet count >400 × 109/L. RESULTS: The median age of the patients was 54 years (range, 22-90 yea

Intravenous iron in chronic kidney disease without anaemia but iron deficiency: A scoping review.

Iron deficiency (ID) is a prevalent complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD), often managed reactively when associated with anaemia. This scoping review evaluates the evidence supporting intravenous (IV) iron therapy in non-anaemic individuals with CKD and ID, focusing on safety, efficacy, and emerging therapeutic implications. Current diagnostic markers, including serum ferritin, transferrin saturation, and reticulocyte haemoglobin content, are reviewed alongside their limitations in the context of inflammation and variability. The pathophysiology of ID in CKD is explored, highlighting th

Early Haematologic Response to Oral Iron Treatment in Adults With Moderate Iron-Deficiency Anaemia.

BACKGROUND: Identifying early response to oral iron supplementation in anaemic patients is key. This study aims to assess the onset-of-action of oral liquid solution of ferrous gluconate, copper and manganese gluconate in adults with moderate iron deficiency anaemia. METHODS: This prospective, open-label study was conducted in France, Bulgaria and Kenya. All patients received 150 mg of oral ferrous gluconate/day for 12 weeks. Eleven blood samples were taken at Day 7 and at Days 0, 3, 5, 7, 10, 14, 21, 28, 56 and 84. The primary endpoint was to assess treatment duration required to observe a +

Innovative Plant-Based Nutraceuticals: Enhancing Iron Bioavailability to Address Iron Deficiency Anaemia.

Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) affects 25% of the global population, with detrimental effects on the health of women and children. Treatments with iron supplements offer temporary relief but often yield adverse effects, hindering patient adherence. Additionally, IDA is associated with oxidative stress, which becomes significantly exacerbated during iron supplementation. Our study aimed to address this challenge by developing a plant-based nutritional formula rich in bioavailable iron and antioxidants devoid of adverse effects. Chemical analysis of edible plants, focused on the content of iron a
