During early 2017, we conducted a seroepidemiologic investigation for tickborne encephalitis virus among 291 Japan Self-Defense Forces members in Hokkaido. Two (0.7%) tested positive. Neither had clinically apparent symptoms after removing ticks.

This study examined the effects of birth characteristics, which reported on birth certificates, on sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) based on vital statistics between 1995 and 1998 in Japan. In Japan, Tsutsugamushi disease, which is caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi, is re-emerging with newly recognized strains and is now endemic in all prefectures except Hokkaido and Okinawa. In order to understand radiographers' views of teleradiology, we sent questionnaires to all radiographers in Hokkaido, Japan. Clinical features of tsutsugamushi disease (scrub typhus) were analyzed, based on 416 cases reported in Japan in 1998. Three major clinical symptoms: eschar, fever and rash were found in 87%, 98% and 92% of the cases, respectively. Elevated levels of CRP, GOT, GPT and LDH were observed in 96%, 85%, 78% and 91%, respectively. Since 1974, no Japanese encephalitis (JE) case had been reported on Okinawa island in either Okinawan people or US servicemen. In 1991, three US marines stationed on Okinawa island developed encephalitis symptoms. Neutralization (N) test and IgM-capture ELISA were carried out on the serial samples of serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) taken from the patients. Adult T-cell leukaemia (ATL) was first reported in Japan, where it has a high incidence in the southwest region. The retrovirus human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) is the cause of ATL; and in ATL-endemic areas, the rate of carriage of antibodies to HTLV-I is high.
