OBJECTIVE: To describe primary care management of early and prolonged jaundice in otherwise-healthy term infants to identify opportunities to increase early diagnosis of cholestasis.
METHODS: Community-based pediatricians in St Louis, Missouri completed a mailed, anonymous, 29-item survey to assess practice demographics, timing of routine newborn office visits, and the management of early and prolonged neonatal jaundice.
RESULTS: A total of 108 of 230 (47%) of eligible physicians responded (mean years in practice, 15.3, SD, 9.4). More respondents were very familiar with national guidelines f

Background Neonatal jaundice, characterized by the yellow discoloration of an infant's skin and eyes, is a common condition that affects newborns. It results from an elevated level of bilirubin in the blood and, when severe, if left untreated, can lead to complications such as acute bilirubin encephalopathy and kernicterus, which can cause permanent neurological damage or even death. In low-resource settings like Nigeria, delayed recognition and inadequate management of neonatal jaundice are significant contributors to neonatal morbidity and mortality. Parental knowledge and attitudes play a c…

The influence of hyperbilirubinaemia on the infants' cries and the feasibility of the use of cry analysis for the early identification of developing kernicterus were studied by analyzing the cries of 100 healthy one-day-old infants and 31 infants with Rh haemolytic disease of the newborn (Rh-HDN) by using sound spectrographic methods. The newborn infants with Rh-HDN were divided into three subgroups according to the findings in a neurological examination: an evident group (10 infants), a transient group (13 infants) and an asymptomatic group (8 infants) and followed up until one year of age. C…

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) commonly affects women of childbearing age, leading to concerns about the effects of the disease on fertili … ions including IBD, pose little risk to the human fetus. Similarly, despite the theoretical risk of kernicterus, sulfasalazine appears to be a safe drug even when used during the third trimester of pregnancy.U

Neurological status was studied in 50 jaundiced infants with a total serum bilirubin of > 400 mumol/l (23.4 mg/dl). Infants were assessed in the neonatal period with the Neonatal Neurological Examination and 4 months of age with the Infant Motor Screen. Twenty-six (52 per cent) infants were premature. Analysis of variance did not show a significant difference between gestational age, birth weight, and maximum total serum bilirubin or between gestational age, birth weight, and neurological optimality score. Based on the presence of abnormal neurological syndromes the infants were classified as

BACKGROUND: Haemolytic disease of the foetus and newborn (HDFN) is an immune disorder driven by maternal alloimmunisation against foetal/newborn red blood cell antigens. HDFN can cause significant morbidity and mortality, with symptoms in the foetus ranging from mild anaemia to hydrops fetalis. While in newborns, HDFN can lead to severe forms of neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia and kernicterus. This systematic review (SR) aimed to identify and summarise real-world evidence (RWE) related to the patient burden/experience and economic burden of HDFN.
METHODS: Electronic database searches supplemente…

AIM: Neonatal jaundice is an important and prevalent condition that can cause kernicterus and mortality. This study validated a smartphone-based screening application (Biliscan) in detecting neonatal jaundice.
METHODS: A cross-sectional prospective study was conducted at the neonatal unit in a tertiary teaching hospital between August 2020 and October 2021. All babies born at the gestation of 35 weeks and above with clinical jaundice or are recommended for screening of jaundice within 21 days of post-natal age were recruited. Using Biliscan, images of the babies' skin over the sternum were ta…

Insufficient milk intake in breastfed neonates is common, frequently missed, and causes preventable hospitalizations for jaundice/hyperbilir … disorder, autism, cerebral palsy, cognitive and developmental delay, epilepsy, hearing impairment, kernicterus, language disorder, mood disorders, lower IQ, and specific learning disorder.
