Hematologic evaluation of employees with leukopenia. Naval Weapons Center, China Lake, California.

Evaluation of 86 employees with a history of leukopenia at the Naval Weapons Center (NWC), China Lake, California, was done by exposure questionnaires, medical histories, physical examinations, peripheral blood smear, and bone marrow evaluations, including morphologic examination, stem cell culture, and cytogenetics. Forty-eight subjects were found to be leukopenic at the time of the study, and two subjects were found to have hairy cell leukemia. All subjects had positive exposure histories and were healthy at the time of the study. Review of peripheral smears identified the patients with marr

The epizootiology and pathogenesis of thyroid hyperplasia in coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) in Lake Ontario.

The thyroid glands of coho salmon collected at different stages of their anadromous migration exhibited progressive and extensive hyperplasia and hypertrophy. The incidence of overt nodule formation rose from 5% in fish collected in August to 24% in fish collected in October. The histological picture of the goiters was similar to that found in thiourea-treated teleosts and thiouracil-treated mammals. There was a concomitant, significant decrease in serum thyroxine and triiodothyronine values between September and October (thyroxine, 1.0+/-0.3 mug/100 ml and 0.4 mug/100 ml in September and Octo

Explainable and uncertainty-aware AI for national-scale ecological status assessment of Finnish lakes under the EU water framework directive.

Understanding lake ecological status (ES) and the environmental factors that influence it is critical for maintaining ecosystem stability. The European Union Water Framework Directive (WFD, 2000/60/EC) provides a standardised methodology for assessing ES, classifying lakes into five categories ranging from Bad to High. However, conventional assessment approaches are labour-intensive, time-consuming, and limited in temporal resolution, particularly in boreal and Arctic regions where ecosystems are increasingly affected by climate change and anthropogenic pressures. Using the official Finnish WF…

Stable Carbon and Nitrogen Isotope Signatures in Three Pondweed Species-A Case Study of Rivers and Lakes in Northern Poland.

Aquatic plants, as sedentary lifestyle organisms that accumulate chemical substances from their surroundings, can serve as valuable indicato … search conducted between 2008 and 2011 encompassed 38 sites along 15 rivers and 108 sites across 21 lakes in northern Poland. This study focused on the isotope signatures of three pondweed species: Stuckenia pectinata, Potamogeton perfoliatus, and Potamogeton crispus. The results revealed statistically significant differences in the δ13C and δ15N values …

Monitoring and assessment of population, reproductive, and health effects in colonial waterbirds breeding at contaminated Great Lakes sites in Michigan.

Immunological, reproductive, and population endpoints were assessed in fish-eating birds during 2010-2019 in the Saginaw River and Bay and River Raisin Areas of Concern (AOCs) and Grand Traverse Bay, which are ecosystems historically contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls, dibenzo-p-dioxins, and dibenzofurans. Reference sites were in the lower St. Marys River (herring gulls and Caspian terns), eastern Lake Superior (terns), and eastern Lake Huron (black-crowned night herons). Relative risk ratios for embryonic nonviability (from both infertility and mortality) in gull embryos were 2-3-fol

From disruption to adaptation: Response of phytoplankton communities in representative impounded lakes to China's South-to-North Water Diversion Project.

Impounded lakes are often interconnected in large-scale water diversion projects to form a coordinated system for water allocation and regulation. The alternating runoff and transferred water can significantly impact local ecosystems, which are initially reflected in the sensitive phytoplankton. Nonetheless, limited information is available on the temporal dynamics and assembly patterns of phytoplankton community in impounded lakes responding to continuous and periodic water diversion. Herein, a long-term monitoring from 2013 to 2020 were conducted to systematically investigate the response of…

Investigating the diet source influence on freshwater fish mercury bioaccumulation and fatty acids-Experiences from Swedish lakes and Chinese reservoirs.

Dietary uptake is key for transferring potentially toxic contaminants, such as mercury (Hg) and essential dietary nutrients, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), to consumers at higher trophic levels of aquatic food webs. We evaluated the role of diet sources for Hg bioaccumulation and PUFA retention in fish across lake food webs in seven Swedish lakes and two Chinese reservoirs. Fish total Hg (THg) and methyl-Hg (MeHg) differed greatly between the two countries: the Chinese fish contained less than 300 ng g-1 dry weight (d.w.) THg with less than 50% as MeHg, versus the Swedish fishes w…

Metagenomic analysis reveals the diversity and distribution of antibiotic resistance genes in thermokarst lakes of the Yellow River Source Area.

Thermokarst lakes form as the results of ice-rich permafrost thawing and act as important water resources in cold regions. However, the distributions of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in thermokarst lakes are far less studied. Using metagenomic sequencing approach, we provided the first study to document ARGs in thermokarst lakes of the Yellow River Source Area on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). The results revealed that both sediment and water of the thermokarst lakes harbor diverse ARGs. Multidrug resistance genes were the most diverse, while rifamycin resistance genes were the most abu…

High prevalence of urinary schistosomiasis in a desert population: results from an exploratory study around the Ounianga lakes in Chad.

BACKGROUND: Researching a water-borne disease in the middle of the Sahara desert might not seem the most relevant concern. However, nomadic Sahelian pastoralists health concerns regarding their livestock and anecdotal reports about trematode infections of Fasciola spp. and Schistosoma spp. in desert-raised animals justified an exploratory study focusing on the lakes of Ounianga in Northern Chad. The aim was to test whether trematode parasites such as Schistosoma spp. occur in human populations living around the Sahara desert lakes of Ounianga Kebir and Ounianga Serir in northern Chad. METHODS…

Associations between extreme precipitation, drinking water, and protozoan acute gastrointestinal illnesses in four North American Great Lakes cities (2009-2014).

Climate change is already impacting the North American Great Lakes ecosystem and understanding the relationship between climate events and public health, such as waterborne acute gastrointestinal illnesses (AGIs), can help inform needed adaptive capacity for drinking water systems (DWSs). In this study, we assessed a harmonized binational dataset for the effects of extreme precipitation events (≥90th percentile) and preceding dry periods, source water turbidity, total coliforms, and protozoan AGIs - cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis - in the populations served by four DWSs that source surface w…

Phosphorous partitioning in sediments by particle size distribution in shallow lakes: From its mechanisms and patterns to its ecological implications.

This study revealed a general pattern of P partitioning onto sediment particles that has ecological implications for shallow lakes. Six individual sediment samples from two large shallow lakes in eastern China were sieved into five sediment particle size classes ranging from 0.5 μm to 50 μm. These particle size groupings were subjected to P fractionation and P adsorption isotherm analyses as well as bioavailable P bioassays. A P-adding experiment was used to validate the initial P partitioning onto the sediment particles. Multiple lines of evidence revealed that P partitioning onto the particl…

Anthropogenically driven differences in n-alkane distributions of surface sediments from 19 lakes along the middle Yangtze River, Eastern China.

During the past few decades, the Yangtze River basin has undergone massive anthropogenic change. In order to evaluate the impacts of human interventions on sediment n-alkanes of lakes across this region, the aliphatic hydrocarbon fractions of 19 surface sediment samples collected from lakes along the middle reaches of the Yangtze River (MYR) were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The n-alkanes extracted from the sediments contained a homologous series from C15 to C34, with a notable predominance of odd carbon compounds except for sediments from the more intensively industria…

Ca2+ levels in Daphnia hemolymph may explain occurrences of daphniid species along recent Ca gradients in Canadian soft-water lakes.

Calcium levels are declining in eastern North American and western European lakes. This widespread issue is affecting the composition of crustacean zooplankton communities, as the presence and abundance of several calcium-rich daphniid species are declining, while two other daphniids, D. catawba and D. ambigua, that apparently tolerate low calcium environments, are prospering. The physiological basis for low calcium tolerance of these daphniids is unknown. In this study the presence of one Ca-rich (D. pulicaria) and one Ca-poor (D. ambigua) daphniid species in Canadian Shield lakes is assessed…

Emerging investigator series: geochemistry of trace elements associated with Fe and Mn nodules in the sediment of limed boreal lakes.

Thousands of boreal lakes were limed for decades in Scandinavia to counteract the effect of anthropogenic acidification. We measured the concentrations of alkali earth metals (Ca, Mg, Ba), metals (Mn, Fe, Al, Co, Cd, Pb, Zn), metalloids (As, Mo) and phosphorus (P) in 165 surface sediment samples from 17 limed lakes, as well as the sediment column and porewater of two lakes chosen from this set. We report that formation of ferromanganese nodules is widespread in limed lakes, and that those nodules are enriched in trace elements, reaching for example 11 500, 908 and 40 μg g-1 for Ba, Mo and As, …
