Polymicrogyria (PMG) is a malformation of cortical development characterized by an excessive number of small gyri and abnormal cortical lamination, giving the cortical surface an irregular and gross appearance. The severity of clinical manifestations correlates with the extent of cortical involvement. The objective of the present study was to describe three families with linguistic features of developmental language disorder and reading impairment, and to establish a neuroanatomic correlation through neuroimaging. Subjects have been submitted to a comprehensive protocol including psychological…

The authors review the neuropsychology, brain bases, and genetics of three related disorders of language development: reading disability, or developmental dyslexia (RD); language impairment (LI); and speech sound disorder (SSD). Over the past three decades, cognitive analysis has demonstrated that the reading difficulties of most children who have RD result from phonologic impairments (difficulties processing the sound structure of language). Although understanding of LI and SSD is somewhat less developed, both disorders are also associated with phonologic impairments, which may account for th…

Crossed aphasia in dextrals (CAD) constitutes an interesting model for understanding the lateralisation and interaction of language with other cognitive functions in the brain. The authors present a study of a right-handed patient with Wernicke's aphasia following a right hemisphere cerebrovascular accident, who also had impairment in visuospatial skills. Although the patient presented a remarkable improvement in language symptoms on longitudinal follow-up, the combination of linguistic, visuospatial, and attentional impairments ultimately resulted in a persisting inability to perform complex …

INTRODUCTION: Language is a keystone in the normal social and cognitive development of any group of children and early, fitting interventions can largely reduce the repercussions that the deficit has in this area. The article analyses the definition of language as 'the result of a complex nervous activity that allows individuals to communicate mental states by the production of multi-modal signs that symbolise these states in accordance with a linguistic community's own convention'. Other language-related terms are also dealt with.
DEVELOPMENT: Different classifications of language disorders …

The authors' objective in this article was to explore the accuracy of mothers' estimates concerning their children's developmental functioning, especially with respect to vocabulary and gross motor development, by comparing the results of diagnostic tests administered to both the children and their mothers. The authors studied 55 children with disorders of language development (LD) between the ages of 3 and 6 years using several diagnostic scales concerning child development. The authors assessed the mothers' estimates regarding vocabulary and gross motor development by the same scales as thos…

Receptive language disorder in schizophrenia is hypothesized to represent a learning disorder that involves a neurodevelopmental etiology. It is argued that a preexisting developmental language disorder may characterize a subset of schizophrenia patients. A primary deficit in the temporal dynamics of brain function is assumed to cause receptive language disorder in schizophrenia. This hypothesized core deficit includes both disturbance in the processing of rapid, sequential information and disruptions to patterns of brain activation and synchronization. These timing deficits may alter the way …

AIMS: In this paper we analyse the educational and therapeutic needs of children who present pragmatic disorders in language and communication.
DEVELOPMENT: Pragmatic disorders in language and communication stand apart from the other disorders affecting the remaining aspects of language development. Their less specific nature goes beyond the purely linguistic domain and involves wide areas of the patient's affective and social development.
CONCLUSIONS: Not only is it necessary to adapt the general model of speech therapy intervention, but also to include it within a set of pedagogical (based…

Japanese writing system consists of two different types of letters, kana (phonogram) and kanji (morphogram). Various types of alexia with or without agraphia in the Japanese language cause specific type of kanji/kanja dissociation. Upon the neuropsychological analysis of these dissociations, we have proposed a hypothesis of dual neuronal circuits of reading and writing process. Subsequent PET activation studies upon normal subjects confirmed the hypothesis; semantic reading pathway via area 37 on the inferior border of the left temporal lobe and phonological reading pathway via middle portion …

This study was designed to examine the dyslexic subtypes in a transparent orthography (i.e., Spanish language). The subtyping procedure used comparison with chronological-age-matched and reading-level controls on reaction times (RTs) to high frequency words and to pseudowords. Using regression-based procedures, the authors identified 20 phonological and 48 surface dyslexics from a sample of 89 dyslexic third-grade children by comparing them to chronological-age-matched controls on RTs to high frequency and pseudoword reading. However, when the dyslexic subtypes were defined by reference to rea…

What are the psychological, computational and neural underpinnings of language? Are these neurocognitive correlates dedicated to language? Do different parts of language depend on distinct neurocognitive systems? Here I address these and other issues that are crucial for our understanding of two fundamental language capacities: the memorization of words in the mental lexicon, and the rule-governed combination of words by the mental grammar. According to the declarative/procedural model, the mental lexicon depends on declarative memory and is rooted in the temporal lobe, whereas the mental gram…

Individuals with dyslexia can expect to have difficulties learning a second language since second language learning builds on native language learning. The factors that have a negative impact on learning one's native language have a similar impact on learning a foreign language (e.g., difficulties with phonemic awareness, retrieving and processing linguistic information, working memory, metalinguistic explanations, stabilizing sound-symbol relationships). This participant observer report provides (1) a brief review of research on how dyslexia complicates learning a second language; (2) a descr…

In this study, a reading-level-match design was used to test the hypothesis that children with reading disability (RD) are characterized by poor phonological skills, and that a developmental lag, as opposed to a specific deficit, will be found in transparent orthographies. Spanish has a transparent orthography and thus children with RD should not show severe difficulties in the use of the phonological route, as in the English language. A sample of 118 participants was selected and organized into three different groups: 40 with RD, 38 normal readers matched in age with the former, and 40 younge…

Bacterial meningitis is a life threatening infection of the central nervous system. This illness is most prevalent early in life when the healthy child is rapidly acquiring language. This study investigated whether children with a history of bacterial meningitis were at risk for language difficulties post illness. Thirty post-meningitic children, aged between 9 years 0 months and 11 years 0 months, participated in this study. Each subject was administered a measure of non-verbal cognitive ability and a range of language tasks. These children performed poorly on applied language tasks, which ta…

Information about letters and the physical structure of language printed in Roman characters was given to children beginning to read. Experimental investigations coupled three alternative graphic modes of printing upper- and lower-case letters with an instructional intervention termed "Alpha-Beta" which provides practice in letter sorting, matching of letters, associative matching, and memory matching. In respect to graphics, Mode A letters were in standard alphabet form. Mode B provided standard letters with each backed by a unique half-tone (Visually Stippled Alphabet); Mode C provided stand…

This study examined the effect of age at symptom onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD) on the pattern of language disturbance. We assessed 150 consecutive patients with a clinical diagnosis of mild-to-moderate AD using the Western Aphasia Battery and a 100-item picture-naming test. A multivariate linear regression analysis examined the effect of age at onset after controlling for gender, education, severity of dementia and duration of the disease. Patients with early onset performed significantly worse than did patients with late onset on the word comprehension and sequential commands subtests. On…

This study present an approach designed to calculate input provided by a speech and language therapy service. A case weighting system was developed in order to evaluate the cost of services, predict the need for intervention, balance and prioritise the caseload among therapists. It is suggested that this approach can be use widely in clinical practice.

Most controlled studies of facilitated communication (FC) have not validated it. One task, however, on which positive effects of FC have been demonstrated without facilitator influence is the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-R (PPVT-R). The present study investigated if the use of FC could be validated for either a group of subjects with autism or a group with severe to profound cognitive impairments, on the PPVT-R when facilitators were effectively screened from all visual and auditory stimuli. Additionally, the effect of mode of input-auditory or visual-on subjects' performance was investigat
