This paper reports a simple method for acquiring numerous newborn larvae of Trichinella spiralis in vitro. Adults of T. spiralis, collected from small intestine on rats which were infected with infective larvae separated from mice infected experimentally, were put into tissue culture bottle containing M199. Then the bottles were incubated in CO2 incubator (37 degrees C, 5% CO2) for 15-20h. The newborn larvae were collected by passing through filtration, centrifugation and repeated wash. The results showed that this method is effective in terms of the activity of the adults and newborn larvae a…

B. transfuga larvae migrated in livers, lungs and brains of experimentally infected mice. B. transfuga larvae have never been reported as etiologic agents of visceral larva migrans, but our results show that they have a migration in experimental paratenic hosts of a type that suggests their possible role in this syndrome.

During the infection caused by Trichinella pseudospiralis serious damage to muscles is partly compensated with regeneration process. Short, thin fibrillae with central position of the nuclei--regenerating myotubes originate 20--40th day post infection in endomysial tubes remaining after damaged muscle fibres, left by migrating larva. On the 10th day post infection in the vicinity of moving larva activation of nuclei and increased origin of satellite cells under basal membrane occur. With development of the infection endothelia in the vicinity of altered fibrillae are increasing in number but t…

Growing numbers of pet animals in households go along with increasing sensitisation hazards by various, partially highly aggressive allergens. Even running an aquarium can be risky for atopic humans, if the fishes are fed chironomid larvae. This is illustrated by a case of inhalation allergy in a patient who showed severe reactions to skin testing with native chironomidae.

Metacercariae of Fasciola hepatica were labeled with 75Se by exposure of infected Lymnaea columella to 75Se-M, 20 muCi/snail, in 5 ml of water. Seventy-two mice were inoculated with 50 75Se-labeled metacercariae. At intervals after infection, the distribution of metacercariae in gut, body cavities and liver was studied by compressed organ autoradiography, and a variant of this technique adapted to gut content and body cavity washes. Ag degree focus counts from autoradiograms expressed as percentage of actual exposure level were subjected to probit analysis. Estimates of the average departure t

The efficacy of ivermectin against the somatic larval stages of Strongyloides ransomi was evaluated in three trials involving 35 pregnant gilts harbouring induced infections. Treatment at a rate of 300 micrograms/kg bodyweight subcutaneously, four to 16 days before farrowing, was highly effective as judged by counts of larvae in milk and worm burdens of piglets.

Infective larvae of Wuchereria, Brugia, Breinlia, Dirofilaria and Setaria species from an experimental vector, Aedes togoi, are compared. The distinctive bubble-like caudal papillae of Wuchereria bancrofti are readily distinguishable from the protuberant ones of Brugia spp; the 'ear-like' papillae of Breinlia are distinct from the 'knob-like' ones of Dirofilaria or the 'thorn-like' terminal papilla of Setaria.

Observations on the course of Hymenolepis nana infection in immunosuppressed mice are presented. Treatment of the host with hydrocortisone acetate caused superinfection of the bowel with worms and the development of normal cysticercoids in the mesenteric lymph node and liver. Natural infection of mice deprived of their T-cells by pre-adult thymectomy and administration of antithymocyte serum resulted in superinfection and widespread metastasis of aberrant cysticercoids that were greatly enlarged and without scolices, causing death after about five months. The significance of these findings and

The authors are showing the characteristics of Fannia larvae ventral and dorsal sides. They specify on figures the morphological characters that permit to distinguish the species scalaris, manicata and canicularis.

Only seven cases of identifiable intraocular botfly larva infestation have been reported in North America--five since 1969. Two additional cases, both from the same institution, are documented here. The offending maggot or larva was visible in both instances. The findings in each case were diagnostically and morphologically striking. The characteristic funduscopic finding of subretinal tracks, along with the appearance of the larva--encysted in one patient and free-floating in the other-deserves emphasis, since this condition is not always benign and may not be as rare as previously assumed.

The prevalence of infection with Strongyloides fuelleborni and hookworms (Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus), and the possible transmammary passage of these parasites, was studied in the people of a village in Bulapé, Zaire, Africa. Stool examinations revealed that 34% of 76 infants under 200 days of age were infected with S. fuelleborni and 8% were infected with hookworms. Infection rates in the general population were 44% for S. fuelleborni and 90% for hookworms. The examination of milk from nursing mothers revealed the presence of Strongyloides larvae in one case. The finding sug…
