Antibody responses to Toxocara canis using sera from parasite-infected mice and protection from toxocariasis by immunisation with ES antigens.

Evidence for serological cross-reactions between Toxocara canis and related nematode parasites has been sought using sera from infected mice … en as has been used in a highly satisfactory immunodiagnostic test for human toxocariasis (visceral larva migrans). Sera from mice infected with either A. suum, T. cati or T. pteropodis showed definite cross-reactions with T. canis ES antigen in one or other of the two essays used. No reaction between anti-T. leonina sera and T. canis ES antigen was demonstrate …

Human strongyloidiasis in AIDS era: its zoonotic importance.

Human strongyloidiasis is caused by a nematode Strongyloides stercoralis. Many species cause strongyloidiasis in animals. The parasite has predilection to one host only but the host specificity is not strict. When animal species infects humans there is intense allergic reaction in the form of cutaneous larva currens and larva migrans. Therefore, strongyloidiasis in strict terms is a zoonotic disease. The strongyloides species have three stages. The parasitic form inside the host, the free form stage in the soil or water that moults to infective third stage. The later infects the host through s…

Successful capture of Toxocara canis larva antigens from human serum samples.

BACKGROUND: Toxocara canis is a nematode that parasitizes dogs, while humans are paratenic hosts. When humans are infected the migrating larvae damage the liver, lungs and even the nervous system. Larva migrans diagnosis is based on immunological techniques; however, the commercial immunodiagnostic kits detect anti-T. canis antibodies which may cross-react with other parasites, mainly nematodes with extra-intestinal migration. Moreover, antibodies do not necessarily reflect an active infection; so detection and quantification of circulating antigens may provide appropriate and timely informati…

Eosionophilic pseudotumor of the liver due to Ascaris suum infection.

A case of eosinophilic pseudotumor of the liver due to Ascaris (A) suum is described in a 34-year-old-man with a high serum level of immunog … ting parasitic infection, although neither larvae nor eggs were detected. The diagnosis of visceral larva migrans (VLM) due to A. suum was based on immunoserological tests. The patient was a habitual consumer of raw bovine liver, which may explain the A. suum infection. After drug therapy with albendazole, the hypoechoic nodules disappeared. Differential diagno …

This article describes the drugs used in helminthic infections and their therapeutic indications, mode of action, toxicity and other details … part of their life cycle in man--therapy tends to be largely non-specific. For example, in visceral larva migrans, caused by the dog roundworm Toxocara canis, only palliative therapy with systemic anti-inflammatory agents and corticosteroids may be helpful. Cutaneous larva migrans, caused by the dog hookworms Ancylostoma brasiliensis and Ancylostoma caninum, is …

Pathogenesis of cerebral toxocariasis and neurodegenerative diseases.

Toxocara canis belongs to one of zoonotic parasites that commonly infects canines worldwide, and its eggs in host faeces may contaminate the … various internal organs as leading to neurotoxocariasis (NT), ocular toxocariasis (OT), or visceral larva migrans (VLM). Although the systemic immune response to T. canis has been widely reported, the immune response in the brain has received little attention. Measurement of the IgG Avidity Index in the Diagnosis of Clinical Toxocariasis Patients.

Toxocara spp. are parasitic nematodes responsible for human toxocariasis, a common zoonotic helminth infection. The five main features of human toxocariasis are the classical ocular toxocariasis and visceral larva migrans syndrome, followed by covert toxocariasis, common toxocariasis and neurotoxocariasis. The diagnosis of toxocariasis is feasible by considering clinical symptoms, anamnestic history and serology laboratory results; however, serological criteria cannot be used to distinguish active Toxocara infection from past exposure, which is an area of much discussion in clinical practice. …

Epidermal parasitic skin diseases: a neglected category of poverty-associated plagues.

Epidermal parasitic skin diseases (EPSD) are a heterogeneous category of infectious diseases in which parasite-host interactions are confined to the upper layer of the skin. The six major EPSD are scabies, pediculosis (capitis, corporis and pubis), tungiasis and hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans. We summarize the current knowledge on EPSD and show that these diseases are widespread, polyparasitism is common, and significant primary and secondary morbidity occurs. We show that poverty favours the presence of animal reservoirs, ensures ongoing transmission, facilitates atypical methods of…

A practical approach to common skin problems in returning travellers.

Skin diseases are the third most common cause of morbidity in returning travellers and may affect 8% of travellers during travel. Classic tropical diseases account for one quarter and the remainder are cosmopolitan diseases. The majority are of infectious origin, and of these bacterial infections are the most common and lead to the most hospitalisations. The ten most frequently encountered diagnoses comprise four classical tropical infections (cutaneous larva migrans, myiasis, tungiasis and cutaneous leishmaniasis) and six nontropical diseases (bacterial skin infections, arthropod bites, aller…

Prevalence of antibodies against Ascaris suum and its association with allergic manifestations in 4-year-old children in The Netherlands: the PIAMA birth cohort study.

The association between helminth infections and childhood atopic diseases remains controversial. The majority of studies have been carried out in tropical areas, whereas less information is available from western countries with low intensity of helminth infections. In the Netherlands, the infection of pigs with Ascaris suum is very common, particularly on pig farms with outdoor facilities. This helminth can also infect humans, causing visceral larva migrans. This study aims at determining the prevalence of antibodies against A. suum and its association with allergic symptoms and sensitisation …

Prevalence of Toxocara-induced liver granulomas, detected by immunohistochemistry, in a series of autopsies at a Children's Reference Hospital in Vitoria, ES, Brazil.

The aim of this investigation was to study the frequency of visceral larva migrans (VLM) granulomas in autopsies at a Children's Reference Hospital in Vitoria, ES Brazil, where anti-Toxocara antibodies are frequently detected in the serum of children admitted at the hospital. Two liver fragments from 310 autopsies of children aged between 1 and 15 years were paraffin embedded, and sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and submitted to detection of Toxocara antigens using a rabbit anti-Toxocara serum. Among the 24 cases with granulomatous lesions, ten had eosinophil-rich granulomas p…

Assay of nematocidal activity of isoquinoline alkaloids using third-stage larvae of Strongyloides ratti and S. venezuelensis.

We examined the effects of isoquinoline alkaloids in vitro in an effort to identify a treatment for Strongyloides stercoralis larva migrans in humans. Infective third-stage larvae of S. ratti and S. venezuelensis were used as model nematodes for S. stercoralis. Nematocidal activity was evaluated by the 50% paralysis concentration (PC(50)). Most of the tested isoquinoline alkaloids had activity for S. ratti and S. venezuelensis. We then evaluated in vitro cytotoxicity, which was the 50% inhibition concentration (IC(50)) of the compounds using HL60 tissue-culture cells. Three of the compounds (p…

Human toxocarosis. Its seroprevalence in the city of La Plata.

Toxocara canis is very common in dogs throughout the world. It is the primary cause of visceral larva migrans (VLM) in humans. Soil contaminated with T. canis embryonated eggs is the main source of infection of man. Our objective was to describe Toxocara seroprevalence in humans in the city of La Plata associated with some determinants such asage, presence or absence of clinical manifestations and risk factors. Blood samples were collected at random from 156 patients of different sex and age, with and without clinical symptoms compatible with the disease. The diagnostic technique ELISA test wa…

Spontaneous disseminated panarteritis in laboratory beagle dogs in a toxicity study: a possible genetic predilection.

Disseminated panarteritis was found in 16 (9 males and 7 females) of 49 laboratory beagle dogs (25 males and 24 females) from one breeding k … atible with those of immune arteritis. Round worm intestinal infestation and granulomas of visceral larva migrans were common in several organs. Statistical analyses suggested that the pedigree of dogs is related to panarteritis, but the presence or absence of parasitization alone is not. The possible roles of genetic predilection and/or parasites in the pathog …

[Cutaneous gnathostomiasis, first confirmed case in Colombia].

Gnathostomiasis is a parasitic zoonosis caused by some species of helminthes belonging to the genus Gnathostoma . It has a wide clinical presentation and its diagnosis is a challenge. Tropical and subtropical countries are endemic, and its transmission is associated with eating raw or undercooked meat from fresh water animals. Increasing global tourism and consuming exotic foods have produced a noticeable rise in cases of the disease in the last decades. However, in our country, there has not been any confirmed case of gnathostomiasis previously reported. We present the case of a 63-year-old C

Toxocara Awareness Among Medical Practitioners in Saudi Arabia.

Human toxocariasis is a zoonotic infection with global and regional impacts. Worldwide it is underestimated and clinically overlooked. Medical practitioners are generally unaware of the extent of the resulting disease spectrum. The objective of the study was to assess knowledge and disease awareness among medical practitioners in Aseer, south-western Saudi Arabia. A questionnaire addressing knowledge about the parasite, its visceral larva migrans and the disease spectrum generated was used to interview participants. The study included 285 participants. In answer to the question what is toxocar…
