OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical outcome after hybrid laser treatment of the prostate, combining potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) and Nd:YAG lasers, with transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP).

Prostatectomy by transurethral balloon Laserthermia (PROSTALASE) was performed in a canine model. The patient was a 62-year-old woman who was referred to our department for bilateral diffuse abnormal shadows along with a sigmoid colon cancer that had been resected one month previously. 135 patients with senile retinoschisis were treated by argon laser coagulation. 73 of them were reexamined after an average interval of 15 months. The treatment consisted of a posterior demarcation by 2-3 lasercoagulation series in the area of the normal retina and in addition treatment of the entire area of retinoschisis. Lasercoagulation was performed, when: 1. the retinoschisis reached the equator or extended postequatorially, 2. a hole in the outer layer was detected, 3. a retinal detachment proceeded from a retinoschisis in the other eye.

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to investigate the pathogenesis of telangiectatic matting (TM) and identify possible risk factors.
METHODS: This study had two parts. The clinical records of consecutive patients were retrospectively analysed to identify risk factors for TM. In a 48-year-old man who suffered from progressive loss of vision in his left eye and metamorphopsia, pseudoxanthoma elasticum was diagnosed. Angioid streaks were observed in both eyes and the skin showed small yellow papules in a linear pattern. The right retina was twice treated by laser coagulation which resulted in temporary regression of neovascularization. Pseudoxanthoma elasticum is a genetic disorder with variable penetrance. There is no treatment. Patients should be told to refrain from contact sports and to avoid using aspirin.
