To establish a safe and convenient serodiagnostic method for swine erysipelas, a purified protective protein antigen of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, which included a large amount of protective protein (64 kDa protein), was used for enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and the latex agglutination (LA) test. To evaluate a recently developed latex photometric immunoassay (LPIA) that which can measure 40 samples quantitatively within 30 minutes, we measured D-dimer levels in blood samples obtained from patients with disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Linearity of D-dimer determination was shown over the range from 0.5 to 36 micrograms/ml, and recovery studies demonstrated 94 to 108% recovery. Four patients with mixed IgM–IgG cryoglobulinaemia are described. Clinically they all had some features of an autoimmune disease, while two of them had a lympho-epithelial tumour in the parotid gland. The mixed cryoglobulins of all patients contained an IgM paraprotein with the properties of a rheumatoid factor. They can be regarded as cryoprecipitates of a rheumatoid factor with autologous IgG. The similarities between clinical features of erythema infectiosum and collagen disease or other viral infections prompted us to investigate clinical manifestations and laboratory data of parvovirus B19 (B19) infection in adults. A new, solid-phase enzymatic technique is proposed for the detection and measurement of rheumatoid factors (RF). A complex (PAP) consisting of peroxidase and rabbit IgG anti-peroxidase antibodies was used as antigen. Sera from thirty patients with Sjögren's syndrome were studied for the presence of antibodies to salivary duct cells. In sixteen cases (53%) a positive result was obtained. The antibodies were present in the IgG globulins, in the IgM globulins also in nearly 50% of the IgG-positive cases, and rarely in the IgA globulins. A total of 87 patients (17 female, 70 male) were admitted to SIRIRAJ HOSPITAL, MAHIDOL UNIVERSITY, BANGKOK, THAILAND, from JANUARY 1996 TO DECEMBER 1997, with a diagnosis of cryptococcal meningitis and underlying AIDS.
