Risk Factors for Pediatric Acute Chest Syndrome Utilizing Machine Learning Techniques.

Acute chest syndrome (ACS) causes significant morbidity and mortality in both adult and pediatric patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). Despite known risk factors for developing ACS, this complication is often unexpected. We hypothesized that a machine learning model could predict progression to ACS in children. A random forest model was utilized using the Scikit-Learn Python library. Prediction performance was assessed using the C-statistic, sensitivity, and specificity. The features included are demographics, vital signs, laboratory values, medication orders, and additional comorbidities.

Opioid Addiction Medicine in Nigeria: Bridging Clinical Gaps in a Silent Epidemic-A Narrative Review.

Opioid use disorder (OUD) is an emerging public-health challenge in Nigeria, driven largely by non-medical use of tramadol and codeine and compounded by limited access to evidence-based care. This narrative review synthesises evidence on the epidemiology, patterns, harms and treatment gaps for OUD in Nigeria and identifies priorities for policy and research. We searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, the Cochrane Library, African Journals Online, Google Scholar and grey literature from 2005 to 2024 for Nigerian data on non-medical opioid use, clinical harms, opioid agonist therapy (OAT) ser

Context-Aware Weakly Supervised Surgical Instrument Detection.

In minimally invasive surgery, the detection of surgical instruments is the core of many operating room assistive systems. However, traditional methods mostly rely on fully supervised learning, which requires the use of large-scale annotated datasets, and high-quality annotation in the medical field is extremely costly. In recent years, weakly supervised learning has shown great potential in medical image analysis, as it only requires image-level annotation to analyze surgical images. This paper introduces weakly supervised object detection into the field of surgical instrument detection, trai

The Septal Swell Body: An Anatomic Misnomer.

Several recent publications describe a "septal swell body" within the nasal cavity. We review the corresponding sinonasal anatomy and revisit early anatomical descriptions to assess whether this designation is an "anatomical misnomer" and if the classic anatomical nomenclature should be preserved. Citations for the septal swell body and synonyms were searched using PubMed and Cochrane Library databases from inception until December 31, 2023. Classic anatomy articles and historical medical textbooks were also reviewed for references to the regional anatomy and nomenclature. Our database search

Structural and functional characterization of TgGSK3, a druggable kinase in Toxoplasma gondii.

Toxoplasma gondii and Cryptosporidium species are apicomplexan parasites of significant medical and veterinary importance. Although current therapeutic options for toxoplasmosis and cryptosporidiosis demonstrate notable efficacy, their clinical efficacy is often limited by suboptimal efficacy and frequent adverse effects. Moreover, therapeutic alternatives remain limited or nonexistent, particularly for cryptosporidiosis, for which nitazoxanide is currently the only approved medication to treat diarrhea in adults and children older than 1 year of age. To identify alternative therapeutic option

Transformative Deep Vein Thrombosis Prophylaxis With Sequential Compression Devices in the Care of Hospitalized Patients.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a critical complication and concern in hospitalized patients due to its significant morbidity and mortality. Given the complex and multifaceted pathophysiology surrounding DVT formation, patients who have had surgical interventions faced acute or chronic trauma and prolonged immobility are at substantially high risk. Identifying these risk factors early is essential for early intervention and prophylaxis. Current standard-of-care prophylaxis for DVT includes pharmacological agents such as anticoagulants, and recently, there has been an increase in the use of mecha

The Growing Epidemic of Opioid Use Disorder in the Elderly and Its Treatment: A Review of the Literature.

Objective: US demographic trends show an increasing proportion of adults aged > 65 years old, approximately 1 million of whom are living with an opioid use disorder (OUD). OUD may be particularly problematic in this age group due to age-related pain syndromes and comorbidities that increase the risk of side effects, overdose, and death. The objective of this review was to assess the safety and efficacy of medications for OUD (MOUD) in the elderly. Data Sources: A systematic search of the literature in PubMed, CINAHL, MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases was conducted from January 19

A Literature Review and Summary Recommendations of the Impact of Bariatric Surgery on Orthopedic Outcomes.

Many surgeons recommend weight loss in preparation for orthopedic procedures, yet the impact of surgically induced weight loss before orthopedic procedures is not clear. We undertook a literature review to assess the impact of bariatric surgery on the outcomes of total joint arthroplasty (TJA). We searched PubMed, Medline, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar for studies (2010-2017) that evaluated the associations between obesity, bariatric surgery, and orthopedic surgery. Nine studies found that prior bariatric surgery decreased major and minor post-operative complications, operating room (OR

Non-Hormonal Replacement Therapy Regimens: Do they have an Effect on Cardiovascular Risk?

INTRODUCTION: Menopause is associated with adverse effects on quality of life of perimenopausal and post-menopausal women. It also has an impact on the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Hormonal treatments are the most effective medications for menopausal symptoms relief. Given the fact that hormonal treatments are contraindicated for many women, non-hormonal treatment, such as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs), gabapentin, pregabalin, clonidine and phytoestrogens, constitute alternative treatments.
