A machine learning-driven early warning system for cryptocaryoniasis in marine aquaculture.

BACKGROUND: Disease outbreaks, particularly cryptocaryoniasis caused by the ciliate Cryptocaryon irritans, pose significant barriers to sustainable marine fish aquaculture, undermining productivity, profitability, and biosecurity. Despite its impact, early warning tools for parasitic diseases leveraging advanced technologies remain underdeveloped. METHODS: We developed a machine learning (ML)-driven early warning system for cryptocaryoniasis, integrating seven years of outbreak surveillance data (n = 429 events from 2016 to 2023) with 17 high-resolution oceanographic predictors influencing pa

First experience in employing a complex digital support system accompanied by personal assistance to improve aftercare in patients with stroke or transient ischemic attack - results of the PostStroke-Manager feasibility study.

Stroke aftercare is widely acknowledged as crucial yet challenging. Digital tools offer a promising strategy to improve aftercare and, thus, patients' quality of life. However, it has not yet been investigated whether digital tools addressing different aspects of aftercare at the same time can be utilized in stroke patients. This study was intended to gain first experience in employing a complex patient-centered digital support system (i.e., the PostStroke-Manager) in individuals with stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) and thus examined its feasibility accompanied by personal assistance

Current knowledge gaps in extracorporeal respiratory support.

Extracorporeal life support (ECLS) for acute respiratory failure encompasses veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-V ECMO) and extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal (ECCO2R). V-V ECMO is primarily used to treat severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), characterized by life-threatening hypoxemia or ventilatory insufficiency with conventional protective settings. It employs an artificial lung with high blood flows, and allows improvement in gas exchange, correction of hypoxemia, and reduction of the workload on the native lung. On the other hand, ECCO2R focuses on carbon d

Early, Postnatal Pulmonary Hypertension Severity Predicts Inpatient Outcomes in Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia.

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is the major pathophysiologic consequence of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). We aimed to evaluate the association between early CDH-associated PH (CDH-PH) and inpatient outcomes. METHODS: The CDH Study Group registry was queried for infants born 2015-2019 with echocardiograms before 48h of life. PH was categorized using echocardiographic findings: none, mild (right ventricular systolic pressure <2/3 systemic), moderate (between 2/3 systemic and systemic), or severe (supra-systemic). Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed. Adjusted

Construction and Validation of Academic Support Scale in Middle School (ASSMS).

Research on social support in China has been relatively comprehensive as psychological development cannot be separated from the social environment. Family, teachers, and friends are the main sources of social support for middle school students. If we can fully utilize the academic support provided by families, teachers, and classmates in daily life, improve students' personal efficacy, stimulate their learning motivation and desire, and provide corresponding emotional, resource, behavioral, and willingness support for middle school students, it will help them better enhance their learning adap

Social Support in the Peritoneal Dialysis Experience: A Qualitative Descriptive Study.

BACKGROUND: People with end-stage kidney disease can either pursue conservative (palliative) management or kidney replacement therapy. Although transplant is preferred, there is a limited number of organs available rendering the majority of patients treated with some form of dialysis. Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are equivalent regarding clinical outcomes, but peritoneal dialysis is much less costly to provide. Peritoneal dialysis is most often done in the home by the patient or a support person and carries a self-care burden on patients and families. Social support is important for pa

Artificial Intelligence in Hemodialysis: Current Clinical Applications and Future Perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: Timely adjustment of intervention strategies based on multidimensional hemodialysis data is essential for improving patients' quality of life, enhancing clinical outcomes, and reducing complications. However, conventional management (relying heavily on clinician experience and intermittent monitoring) often fails to provide personalized, real-time, and proactive care. Efficient, data-driven methods are therefore urgently needed. In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has shown increasing potential in hemodialysis management, yet comprehensive reviews in this area remain li

Biomaterials and Noncoding RNA: The "Repair-Alliance" Perspective in Intervertebral Disc Degeneration.

Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is a common condition causing chronic back pain and functional impairment, which severely reduces patients' quality of life. Traditional treatments only relieve symptoms without addressing the underlying pathology, highlighting the need for new therapies that repair IVDD at a mechanistic level. Recent progress shows biomaterials can support structure and boost tissue regeneration by mimicking the native extracellular matrix (ECM) of the nucleus pulposus. They also act as delivery systems for bioactive molecules, extending their retention at the target si

Living With Toxic Wounds: The Voices and Visual Self-Representations of Gulf War Veterans.

Operations Desert Shield and Storm occurred over 30 years ago, yet many of those who were deployed continue to experience chronic and debilitating symptoms, now recognized as Gulf War Illness (GWI). While efforts have been made to explore clinical treatments for GWI, misperceptions and skepticism about its complex nature and a lack of consensus on its etiology impede progress in this area. A critical necessity remains to better understand the experiences, needs, and concerns of veterans with GWI. In this qualitative research study, 40 Gulf War veterans were interviewed about their perceptions

Toward the development of a vibrant, super-aged society: The future of medicine and society in Japan.

BACKGROUND: As Japan's population continues to age, it is estimated that the number of people aged ≥75 years will exceed 20 million by 2025. Furthermore, over the past 10 years, we have not reduced the difference between life expectancy and healthy life expectancy. Therefore, the extension of healthy life expectancy and the development of a healthy society are the most urgent issues. In terms of medical care, the changing times have inevitably led to changes in disease structures and medical demands; therefore, the medical delivery system has had to be changed to meet these demands. As dementi

Are Universities Ready to Support Autistic Students? A Call to Increase Coordinated Campus Efforts.

Over the past decade, universities have seen an increase in autistic student enrollment; however, many of these universities are not supporting autistic students to have a quality college experience. Although more autistic young adults are pursuing college, many do not persist to graduation due to a lack of individualized accommodations, siloed provision of support from universities, and overall hesitancy among faculty, staff, and administration to include autistic students in all campus spaces. In addition, autistic students struggle to build self-advocacy, self-determination, and functional
