We investigated the effect of dietary magnesium (Mg) level on protein utilization in rats. Male Wistar rats were fed a control diet (control group) and a Mg-deficient diet (Mg-deficient group) for 28 days. In this work, a magnesium phytic acid/hydroxyapatite composite coating was successfully prepared on AZ31 magnesium alloy substrate by chemical conversion deposition technology with the aim of improving its corrosion resistance and bioactivity. A patient with hypocalcaemia and hypomagnesaemia secondary to small bowel resection and malabsorption was treated with synthetic vitamin D analogue, 1-alpha hydroxy vitamin D3. A prompt rise in serum calcium concentration and some days later a smaller and transient rise in serum magnesium concentration was observed. These changes in extracellular fluid composition presumably resulted from enhanced calcium and magnesium absorption associated with vitamin D activity.
