UNLABELLED: Ultraviolet radiation induced degradation of ascorbic acid in a model apple juice system and in apple juice was studied using a collimated beam batch UV reactor. In the model system, ascorbic acid degradation was more rapid at higher dose levels and the reaction accelerated with increasing exposure time. We report a case of mitochondrial myopathy (MM), assessed by histological and biochemical studies. This illness was diagnosed in a 69-year-old patient with myocardiopathy revealed by ventricular arrhythmias. The originality of this case lies in the patient's age, the mode of onset and the biochemical features (i.e. normal mitochondrial enzymatic complexes but very low respiration when using glutamate as a substrate).

A cream containing malic, benzoic and salicylic acid esters (Aserbine) was evaluated as a topical dressing for dermal burns. Children with thermal injuries covering less than 20 per cent of the body surface area (BSA) were treated with Aserbine (53 patients), Daromide (31 patients) or silver sulphadiazine (SSD) (16 patients). In these groups, hot liquids were the cause of injury in 92 per cent, 100 per cent and 80 per cent of patients respectively. The activity of NAD(P)-dependent mitochondrial malic enzyme was considerably inhibited by KCN, whereas under the same conditions azide affected the enzyme only slightly. Kinetic studies showed that KCN is an uncompetitive inhibitor of mitochondrial malic enzyme from human placenta. In contrast to the mitochondrial enzyme, the cytosolic malic enzyme was only slightly affected by KCN and under the same conditions the effect of azide was negligible. The effect of KCN was compared to this on the malic enzyme from other sources.

An investigation was conducted to study the influence of thiamin deficiency on hepatic glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, malic enzyme (NADP), lactate dehydrogenase and it's isoenzymes, total lipids, cholesterol and phospholipids in adult male albino rats.
