OBJECTIVE: Assessment of the diagnostic criteria of reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) and evaluation of the impact of the introduction of the diagnostic criteria of complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) on the international application of diagnostic criteria of RSD.
METHODS: Randomized controlled trials and clinical investigations, published between January 1980 and June 2000, were evaluated with regard to the applied diagnostic criteria of RSD.

Osteoma of the para-nasal sinuses is a rare and benign tumor that develops slowly. When therapy becomes mandatory, it is necessarily surgical and requires a standard external approach. This report analyses seven cases of operated osteomas, using different surgical techniques, adapted to different indications. We report a case of aneurysmal coronary sinus complicating severe valvular disease with severe tricuspid regurgitation. Injection in the left superior vena cava outlines the aneurysmal coronary sinus with stasis of the contrast. In this case report, a rare case of a distal forearm fracture in conjunction with an initially overlooked ipsilateral Monteggia Bado type III injury highlights the learning objectives of this case report. Multiple fractures occur in approximately 1% of all fracture cases in children and adolescents, and meticu-lous physical and appropriate radiographic examinations are mandatory in order to diagnose all injuries. Arthrography is a viable option for dynamic evaluation of joint congruity and stability intraoperatively.

Two cases of bilateral neonatal testicular torsion are reported and combined with 6 previously reported ones. These infants with bilateral testicular torsion are compared with neonates with unilateral torsion. Both have similar signs and symptoms: (1) a swollen bluish-red firm scrotum at birth, and (2) no evidence of spontaneous pain. Infants in neither group had any systemic symptoms. Immediate investigation with reduction is mandatory to prevent testicular atrophy.

Intentional ingestion of foreign objects is common in incarcerated individuals. Ingested foreign objects can lead to serious complications. Surgical treatment is considered mandatory once complications such as bowel perforation and abscess develop. We report an incarcerated individual with sigmoid perforation and pelvic abscess related to an ingested foreign object that was managed nonsurgically.

Prompt recognition and early surgical correction are mandatory in neonates presenting with obstructed total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC). Preoperative balloon angioplasty of obstructed TAPVC in a sick neonate is rarely reported. We describe successful short-term palliation with balloon angioplasty of a critically ill neonate with obstructed supracardiac TAPVC.

Choriocarcinomas are rare genital tract tumours, which can present with extragenital symptoms and signs. We report on an 18-year-old nulliparous woman presenting with jejunal choriocarcinoma. An outline of the diagnostic difficulties and different manifestations of extragenital choriocarcinoma is given. A high index of suspicion should be maintained and a multi-disciplinary approach is mandatory.

A case report serves to document that sufficient cerebral circulation is mandatory for sustaining function of the brain. If impulses from the ear are not processed within the areas of the brain normally doing this, prescription of a hearing aid will not improve the capacity to perceive in a patient being hard of hearing. In these cases, one should rather examine the state of the cerebral circulation.

The simultaneous diagnosis of polycystic kidney, Marfan's syndrome and silent spina bifida in a young woman is described. The coexistence of the first two entities has recently been reported as not rare, but the pathogenetic mechanism is not clear. The prognostic importance and the frequency of these two clinical entities make complete assessment of patients with only one of the two malformations mandatory.

A significant number of children with the Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome are prone to the development of nephroblastomas and adrenal carcinomas. Renomegaly, a prolonged tubular blush on excretory urography similar to that of medullary sponge kidney, and previously undescribed caliceal diverticula may be observed. Diligent followup is mandatory to detect early neoplasia. Suggestions are detailed based on reported case management.

Cutaneous mucinosis of infancy is a rare skin disease with just a few reported cases in the literature. We report the case of an 11-year-old boy with asymptomatic, skin-coloured papules and plaques on his right arm that had appeared 9 months prior to presentation. Histology showed a dermal and deep dermal interstitial mucin deposition and fibroblast proliferation. However, because cutaneous mucinosis of infancy is a benign disease with a good prognosis, therapy is not mandatory.

Retrograde Jejunogastric intussusception is a well-recognised, rare but potentially fatal, long-term complication of gastro-jejunostomy or Billroth-II reconstruction. Only about 200 cases have been reported in literature to date. Diagnosis of this condition is difficult in most of the cases. To avoid mortality early diagnosis and prompt surgical intervention is mandatory. Since gastrojejunostomies with vagotomy are on a declining trend, it is extremely rare to come across such a complication. We report such a case that presented with haematemesis.

Hydatid disease of the primary type may involve CNS and bone. Compression of the spinal cord and spinal nerve roots, caused by hydatid material from an affected vertebra is a rare condition which makes surgical decompression mandatory. We report the neuroradiological findings in a case of vertebral hydatidosis, confirmed by surgical appearance and hystological examination.

Primary lymphoma can occur in the brain and is restricted to the central nervous system (CNS). Secondary lymphoma involves the CNS after affecting other organs in the body. The prognosis is worse for secondary CNS lymphoma. Early diagnosis and treatment are mandatory. We report a case of secondary CNS lymphoma that was misdiagnosed as a cerebral abscess because of its unusual features.

Numerous pathologies of the spine, pelvis and hips can present with gluteal pain and pose a challenge to orthopaedic surgeons. We report a unique Case of tuberculous osteomyelitis of the ischium in a young immunocompetent individual presenting as gluteal pain. A high index of suspicion, early diagnosis and prompt management is mandatory to promote early and complete healing and prevent complications.

We report the 1st case of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) septic arthritis after acupuncture, with articular cartilage destruction and chronic osteomyelitis. The patient responded to arthrotomy, synovectomy, and 6 months of antibiotics. The emergence of community-associated MRSA infections would further aggravate the problem. Strict adherence to proper infection control guidelines is mandatory.
