Piloting novel haptic devices for newborn simulation: Nurse practitioner and nurse simulationist perspectives and experiences.

In this study, we investigated nurse practitioner (NP) and nursing simulationist perspectives and experiences using novel wearable haptic devices for newborn simulation. This was a mixed methods pilot study including 12 participants (n = 12) at a large Southeastern university. Procedures included simulation stations where NP and nursing simulation faculty used a trainer manikin and mechanically engineered haptic devices to perceive sensations on the fingertips and hand (vibration and thermal). These devices were used to evaluate accurate assessment of simulated body temperature, femoral and br

Postural and cardiorespiratory responses to emotionally-laden whole-body expressions.

Postural and autonomic adjustments are commonly described during the observation of emotional stimuli. Thus, this study investigated the physiological impact of emotional images viewing revealed by whole-body expressions. Body sway and cardiorespiratory signals were recorded in thirty-nine healthy young people who maintained an upright stance while observing 20 neutral, 20 happiness (positive) or 20 anger (negative) images from the Bodily Expressive Action Stimulus Test (BEAST) database. Participants rated each image considering their valence and arousal dimensions with the Self-Assessment Man

Use of personal protective equipment and cognitive load during cardiopulmonary resuscitation - A randomized cross-over simulation-based study.

BACKGROUND: The use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to prevent disease transmission, but its impact on rescuer fatigue and CPR quality remains debated. AIM: To simultaneously evaluate the effect of PPE on cognitive load and resuscitation quality. METHODS: In a simulation-based trial at a German tertiary care hospital, 31 healthcare workers performed two 2-minute chest compression (CC) cycles on a manikin, once with PPE and once without. Compression quality (rate, depth, hand position, chest recoil) was assessed. Cognitive load wa

Point-of-Care Ultrasound Pulse Checks During Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation on a Patient Simulator (PUPRAS).

Background/Objectives: During cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), patients must be checked for signs of return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) may be more reliable for detecting the ROSC. We investigated whether a POCUS pulse check algorithm could be used in compliance with the CPR guidelines. Methods: This was a prospective controlled and blinded multicentre manikin study involving staff from two tertiary clinical centres and their emergency medical services. A standard operating procedure for POCUS pulse checks during CPR was evaluated using a simulator i

Validation of a questionnaire for central nervous system aspects of joint pain: the CAP questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: Neuropathic-like pain, fatigue, cognitive difficulty, catastrophizing, anxiety, sleep disturbance, depression and widespread pain associate with a single factor in people with knee pain. We report the Central Aspects of Pain questionnaire (CAP) to characterize this across painful musculoskeletal conditions. METHODS: CAP was derived from the 8-item CAP-Knee questionnaire, and completed by participants with joint pain in the Investigating Musculoskeletal Health and Wellbeing survey. Subgroups had OA, back pain or FM. Acceptability was evaluated by feedback and data missingness. Corr

Numerical studies of indoor particulate and gaseous micropollutant transport and its impact on human health in densely-occupied spaces.

Micropollutants (MPs) have increasingly become a matter of concern owing to potential health risks associated with human inhalation exposure, particularly in densely-occupied indoor environments. This study employed numerical simulations in a traditional built indoor workspace and a public transport cabin to elucidate the transport dynamics and health impacts of particulate and gaseous type of indoor MPs on varying groups of occupants. The risk of infection from pathogen-bearing MPs was evaluated in the workspace using the integrated Eulerian-Lagrangian and modified Wells-Riley model. In the c

Biofidelity Assessment of the WIAMan Thorax by a Comparative Study With Hybrid III, THOR, and PMHS in Frontal Sled Testing.

The Warrior Injury Assessment Manikin (WIAMan) anthropomorphic test device (ATD) has been originally developed to predict and prevent injuries for occupants in military vehicles, in an underbody blast environment. However, its crash performance and biofidelity of the thoracic region have not been explored. The aim of this study was to determine and evaluate the WIAMan thoracic responses in a typical frontal sled test. The 40 kph frontal sled tests were conducted to quantify the WIAMan thoracic kinematics, chest deflection, and belt loads. Comparative biofidelities of the WIAMan thorax and othe

Desired attachment and breakup distress relate to automatic approach of the ex-partner.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Romantic relationship breakups can lead to severe emotional disturbances including major depression. Anxious attachment and desired attachment with the ex-partner are hypothesized to elicit repetitive thought about the breakup and the former partner and attempts to reunite with (i.e. approach) the ex-partner, which fuel breakup distress. Since prior research on this topic has mostly used survey methodology, the study aim was to examine the relations between above-mentioned variables employing a behavioral measure of approach of the ex-partner. METHODS: Automatic app

Pain Drawings Improve Subgrouping of Low Back Pain Patients.

BACKGROUND: Subgrouping of low back pain (LBP) patients may be improved when pain drawings are combined with the painDETECT (PD-Q) questionnaire. We hypothesized that (1) different LBP subgroups determined by their pain radiation show different clinical patterns and (2) the occurrence of neuropathic symptoms depends on pain radiation. METHODS: A total of 19,263 acute (< 6 weeks' duration), subacute (6 to 12 weeks), and chronic (> 3 months) LBP patients were allocated prospectively into 4 groups based on the location of pain drawings on a manikin and compared regarding neuropathic pain compone

A quantitative assessment of the total inward leakage of NaCl aerosol representing submicron-size bioaerosol through N95 filtering facepiece respirators and surgical masks.

Respiratory protection provided by a particulate respirator is a function of particle penetration through filter media and through faceseal leakage. Faceseal leakage largely contributes to the penetration of particles through a respirator and compromises protection. When faceseal leaks arise, filter penetration is assumed to be negligible. The contribution of filter penetration and faceseal leakage to total inward leakage (TIL) of submicron-size bioaerosols is not well studied. To address this issue, TIL values for two N95 filtering facepiece respirator (FFR) models and two surgical mask (SM)

Disorder-specific emotional imagery for differential and quantitative assessment of agoraphobia.

Visual emotional stimulation is supposed to elicit psycho-vegetative reactions, which are similar to as the ones elicited by exposure to actual experience. Visual stimulation paradigms have been widely used in studies on agoraphobia with and without panic disorder. However, the applied imagery has hardly ever been disorder- and subject- specific. 51 patients with an ICD-10 and DSM-IV diagnosis of agoraphobia with or without panic disorder (PDA) and matching healthy controls have been examined. Subjects were confronted with 146 picture showing characteristic agoraphobic situations (high places,

Two-rescuer CPR results in hyperventilation in the ventilating rescuer.

The "Guidelines 2000 for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care--International Consensus on Science" recommend a tidal ventilation volume of 10 ml/kg body-weight without the use of supplemental oxygen during two-rescuer adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). This relates to a ventilation volume of about 6.4 l/min. Additionally, the first aid provider ventilating the victim will breathe for him/herself during the external chest compression period adding another 3.2 l/min of ventilation. Finally, a deep breath is recommended before each ventilation to increase the en

Effect of rescuer fatigue on performance of continuous external chest compressions over 3 min.

Guidelines for the performance of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) have been revised recently and now advocate that chest compressions are performed without interruption for 3 min in patients during asystole and pulseless electrical activity. The aim of the present study was to determine if rescuer fatigue occurs during 3 min of chest compressions and if so, the effects on the rate and quality of compressions. Forty subjects competent in basic life support (BLS) were studied. They performed continuous chest compressions on a Laerdal Skillmeter Resusci-Anne manikin for two consecutive period
