Docetaxel as neoadjuvant chemotherapy in patients with stage III breast cancer.

Optimal management of locally advanced breast cancer (stage III) generally includes a combination of primary chemotherapy followed by surgery (if feasible), and local radiotherapy and adjuvant chemotherapy with or without hormonal therapy. An ongoing phase II study is being performed to evaluate the use of 4 cycles of 100 mg/m2 of docetaxel (Taxotere) administered as a 1-hour intravenous infusion once every 3 weeks followed by surgery, 4 cycles of standard-dose doxorubicin/cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan, Neosar) chemotherapy, and radiation, with and without tamoxifen (Nolvadex) in patients with loc

Isolated optic nerve metastasis of breast cancer initially mimicking retrobulbar optic neuritis.

PURPOSE: To report a pathologically confirmed case of optic nerve metastasis of breast carcinoma, which was initially misdiagnosed as a retrobulbar optic neuritis. There have been no case reports of isolated optic nerve metastasis of breast carcinoma with nonspecific initial fundus and neuroimaging findings. METHODS: A 51-year-old woman presented with decreased visual acuity in her left eye for 15 days. She had undergone a left modified radical mastectomy 10 years earlier. The funduscopic findings were nonspecific, except for a slightly enlarged cup-to-disc ratio of 0.6 in both eyes. The brai

A remarkable case of cutaneous metastatic breast carcinoma.

We describe a 50-year-old woman with a 5-month history of multiple asymptomatic papulonodular lesions on the left chest area. Biopsy was consistent with cutaneous metastases from a ductal breast carcinoma. No distant metastatic lesions were detected. The patient was referred to the Gynecologic Oncology Department. Treatment included chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery. At present the patient is well with no signs of recurrence. This case reports a clinically remarkable cutaneous metastatic breast carcinoma.

Selecting breast cancer patients with T1-T2 tumors and one to three positive axillary nodes at high postmastectomy locoregional recurrence risk for adjuvant radiotherapy.

PURPOSE: To define the individual factors and combinations of factors associated with increased risk of locoregional recurrence (LRR) that may justify postmastectomy radiotherapy (PMRT) in patients with T1-T2 breast cancer and one to three positive nodes. METHODS AND MATERIALS: The study cohort comprised 821 women referred to the British Columbia Cancer Agency between 1989 and 1997 with pathologic T1-T2 breast cancer and one to three positive nodes treated with mastectomy without adjuvant RT. The 10-year Kaplan-Meier estimates of isolated LRR and LRR with or without simultaneous distant recur

A review of nipple discharge in Chinese women.

Nipple discharge was the presenting complaint in 104 patients (1.5%) from a series of 7000 women who were seen in a breast clinic over a 13-year period. Complete follow-up information was available in 66 Chinese patients. The mean age at presentation was 47 years. Twenty-six patients (39%) were postmenopausal. Unilateral discharge (92%) from a single duct (77%) was the main finding. There were five patients (8%) with proven breast cancer; benign duct papilloma was found in 17 patients. Multivariate analysis showed that cancer was most likely in women over the age of 55 (P < 0.05) and when the

Postmastectomy radiotherapy: patterns of recurrence and long-term disease control using electrons.

PURPOSE: To determine the patterns of failure and prognostic factors for locoregional recurrence after postmastectomy radiotherapy (RT), using a specific electron beam technique. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A uniform electron beam was used in 323 patients with invasive breast cancer at the University of Florida Health Science Center. The patterns of disease recurrence, prognostic factors, and overall outcome were studied. RESULTS: At 10 years, the freedom from locoregional recurrence, disease-free survival, and absolute survival rate was 90%, 62%, and 55%, respectively. The 10-year disease-free s

Breast cancer in transgender patients: A systematic review. Part 1: Male to female.

Male-to-Female (MtF) breast cancer events have been reported since 1968 however, MtF patients' risk of breast cancer remain unclear. Following PRISMA guidelines, electronic databases and grey literature were searched April 2018 to identify breast cancer events in MtF transgender persons. Screening and data extraction were independently performed in duplicate by two reviewers. Study quality was assessed using a component-based system. Qualitative analysis was performed on study characteristics, patient demographics, breast cancer characteristics, and breast cancer presentation and management. E

A male patient with metachronous triple cancers of small cell lung, prostate and breast.

We present a very rare case of metachronous triple cancers, including small cell carcinoma of the lung, as well as prostate and male breast cancer. To our knowledge, this is the first documented case of its kind. A 64-year-old man was referred to our hospital with left nipple retraction. He had previously undergone lobectomy of the right lung as treatment for small cell lung cancer at 57 years of age, and at 61 years of age, he had undergone prostatectomy and bilateral orchiectomy for prostate cancer, histologically determined to be moderately or poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. Synchronous breast cancer and non-Hodgkin lymphoma: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Among women, breast cancer (BC) is the most prevalent type of cancer and the top cause of cancer deaths. Although non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is the most prevalent hematological cancer, it is rarely reported synchronous with BC. Moreover, which malignancy appears first can rarely be explained because they are usually detected incidentally while diagnosing and treating other malignancies. This paper reports a case of invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) concomitant with NHL. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 35-year-old woman presented with simultaneous IDC in the left breast and NHL in a lymph

Primary breast cancer in a patient with Wilson disease: A case report.

RATIONALE: Wilson disease (WD) is an autosomal recessive hereditary disease in which the patient usually has a reduced risk of developing cancer. In particular, with the exception of hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma, the incidence of cancer is significantly lower in WD patients compared with the general population. This case study presents a rare case of WD complicated with primary breast cancer. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 40-year-old woman who was diagnosed with WD at 25 years of age found a lump in her left breast. She has a family history of cancer. DIAGNOSES: Ultrasound and mammo

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of female breast: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the breast is a rare neoplasm accounting for 0.1% of breast carcinomas. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 30 year old female patient presented with multiple lumps in the right breast. Excision biopsy of a lump in the lower outer quadrant revealed adenoid cystic carcinoma. A right sided modified radical mastectomy (MRM) was performed, with axillary clearance. Histopathology revealed a fibroadenoma accounting for one mass and adenoid cystic carcinoma in another, confirmed on Periodic acid Schiff (PAS) staining. Three out of the eight excised axillary lymph

Topical betamethasone for prevention of radiation dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Although acute radiation dermatitis (ARD) is a common side-effect of radiotherapy (RT), currently there is no general consensus about its prevention or treatment of choice. AIMS: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether prophylactic use of topical betamethasone 0.1% can prevent ARD caused by chest wall irradiation. METHODS: Fifty-one patients who underwent modified radical mastectomy for breast cancer and were going to receive RT, were randomly assigned to receive topical betamethasone 0.1%, petrolatum or none during RT. The frequency and severity of ARD (measured usi

Multicentricity of breast cancer: whole-organ analysis and clinical implications.

We studied the spatial relationship within the breast between multicentric foci (MCF) and the primary tumour in 30 modified radical mastectomy specimens using Egan's correlated pathological-radiological method using 5 mm slices of the whole breast. The relative positions within the breast of the primary tumour and MCF were used to calculate the relative distribution of primary tumour and MCF in the four quadrants of the breast and the per cent breast volume that would be required to be excised to include all MCF. Nineteen (63%) breast harboured MCF. The relative distribution of primary tumour

Case Report: A case analysis of antitumor therapy and cardiovascular safety management in a breast cancer patient with multiple cardiovascular diseases.

BACKGROUND: As breast cancer treatment advances, therapeutic efficacy has improved significantly, but cardiovascular toxicity from anticancer agents has become a critical concern. Elderly patients often have pre-existing cardiovascular comorbidities like coronary heart disease (CHD) and high venous thromboembolism (VTE) risk, requiring long-term antithrombotic therapy. Perioperative management demands individualized assessment of thrombotic and bleeding risks, with bridging anticoagulation when necessary. Close surveillance for cardiovascular complications (myocardial injury, heart failure, hy

Metastatic breast cancer to bilateral mandibular ramus regions.

Metastatic carcinomas to the jaw bones are uncommon and comprise to about 1% of all malignant oral neoplasms. The purpose of this report is to present a rare case of metastatic breast carcinoma to bilateral mandibular ramus regions. The present case report is about a 40-year-old female patient with the complaints of a paresthesia in the right mandibular area of the last month duration. She was referred to our department by her oncologist with the differential diagnosis of osteonecrosis or metastasis. She had undergone modified radical mastectomy for invasive lobular carcinoma of the left breas

Rare imaging appearance of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast: A case report.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the breast is a rare tumor comprising <0.1% of all breast malignancies. The present study reports the case of a 66-year-old woman who underwent multiple imaging techniques, including mammography, ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The patient reported gradual enlargement of a mass in the left breast. Mammography identified a high-density, irregular mass, with nipple retraction. Ultrasonography revealed an irregular, complex cystic and solid mass with an unclear margin in the subareolar region. The internal vascularity was seen on Doppler exa

F-18 FDG PET scan findings in a case of carcinoma of the breast with a rare site of metastases to the gingival region.

Malignant tumors of the breast have an inherent potential to metastasize more often to the regional lymph nodes. It is rare to find a metastasis to the oral region from a primary in the breast, but when this does occur, it usually involves the jawbones rather than the soft tissues. A 33-year-old premenopausal woman, a diagnosed case of locally advanced right breast carcinoma, underwent right modified radical mastectomy followed by chemotherapy as per the institutional protocol. She presented after 2 years with an exophytic growth in the upper alveolar region of the oral cavity. Biopsy indicate

Sarcoid-like Reaction in Breast Cancer Tumor Bed and Axillary Lymph Nodes Following Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy: A Case Report.

Although granulomatous change is not commonly seen in breast cancer tumor bed and/or lymph node after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NCT), they may mimic lymph node metastasis or tumor progression or recurrence. We present a case of diffuse sarcoid-like reaction (SLR) developed in both the breast tumor bed and axillary lymph nodes after NCT. A postmenopausal Hispanic woman presented with a 11.4 cm left breast mass with swollen lymph nodes in her left axilla. A core biopsy of the breast mass was performed, leading to the diagnosis of grade 3 invasive ductal carcinoma. The tumor is negative for estro
