BACKGROUND: Pursuant to studies, receiving the three key maternal health services (Antenatal Care, Skilled Delivery Service, and Postnatal Care) in a continuum could prevent 71% of global maternal deaths. Despite the Western African region being known for its high maternal death and poor access to maternal health services, there is a dearth of studies that delve into the spectrum of maternal health services uptake. Hence, this study aimed to assess the level and predictors of partial and adequate utilization of health services in a single analytical model using the most recent Demographic and …

Politics is one of the critical factors that influence health policy agendas. However, scholarly efforts, especially in low- and middle-income countries, rarely focus on how politics influence health policy agenda-setting. We conducted a qualitative document review to examine the factors that led to developing the free primary health care policy for maternal health in Papua New Guinea. We also discuss mechanisms through which national politics, as an overriding factor, influenced the development of the policy. The review draws on Kingdon's multiple-stream model for agenda-setting and incorpora…

OBJECTIVE: High maternal and neonatal mortality rates in developing regions like Pakistan are linked to low rates of institutional deliveries. One way to improve rates of institutional deliveries is through improving institutional delivery service satisfaction in women. The aim of this research is to identify which factors influence delivery service satisfaction during the period of COVID-19 and which socio-demographic characteristics of women are associated with greater fear of catching COVID-19 during institutional deliveries.
METHODS: A total of 190 women who had given birth between May to

BACKGROUND: Lay health workers (LHWs) perform functions related to healthcare delivery, receive some level of training, but have no formal professional or paraprofessional certificate or tertiary education degree. They provide care for a range of issues, including maternal and child health. For LHW programmes to be effective, we need a better understanding of the factors that influence their success and sustainability. This review addresses these issues through a synthesis of qualitative evidence and was carried out alongside the Cochrane review of the effectiveness of LHWs for maternal and ch

OBJECTIVES: Pregnant women and neonates face a higher risk of adverse outcomes from infectious diseases, such as COVID-19. COVID-19 vaccines were developed rapidly, but we do not fully understand how the disease affected pregnancies and births before these vaccines were available. This study investigated how COVID-19 impact on pregnant women and their neonates before vaccines became widely available. The aim was to investigate the association between maternal COVID-19 infection and pregnancy and neonatal outcomes.
STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective cohort study included pregnant women and their

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Maternal and infant mortality are higher in low-income than in high-income countries due to weak health systems. The objective of this study was to improve access, utilization and quality of Maternal and Child Health care through a predesigned Enhanced Health Care System (EHC) that embodies the World Health Organization (WHO) pillars of the health system.
DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY: This study was conducted in two dispensaries in the Counties of Busia and Bungoma in Kenya as intervention sites and in four control clusters in Kakamega, Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia and Elgeyo Ma

BACKGROUND: Four initiatives have estimated the value of aid for reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH): Countdown to 2015, the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), the Muskoka Initiative, and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) policy marker. We aimed to compare the estimates, trends, and methodologies of these initiatives and make recommendations for future aid tracking.
METHODS: We compared estimates of aid for RMNCH from the four initiatives for all years available at the time of our analysis (1990-2016). We used publicly ava

Armed conflict, displacement, and related violence is escalating globally, concentrated among civilians and migrants in border areas, and poses grave harms to women and children. The current study investigates how women's life-course experiences of conflict and displacement are linked to maternal stress and health outcomes after childbirth at the Thailand-Myanmar border, specifically stress, mental health, and cardiometabolic outcomes. Analyses are based on a cross-sectional population-based maternal and child health survey of 701 mothers, collected in 2017-18 in northern Thailand along the My

We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of population-based cohort studies of maternal body mass index (BMI) and risk of adverse birth and health outcomes in low- and middle-income countries. PubMed, Embase, CINAHL and the British Nursing Index were searched from inception to February 2014. Forty-two studies were included. Our study found that maternal underweight was significantly associated with higher risk of preterm birth (odds ratio [OR], 1.13; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01-1.27), low birthweight (OR, 1.66; 95% CI, 1.50-1.84) and small for gestational age (OR, 1.85; 95% CI

INTRODUCTION: Global health initiatives (GHIs) have played a significant role in expanding access to healthcare worldwide, particularly in maternal health. For instance, many regions in sub-Saharan Africa have seen a notable rise in the availability of skilled birth attendants. However, despite these gains in access, maternal mortality rates in low-income and middle-income countries within the African Region remain alarmingly high. Although GHIs have invested heavily in maternal health, there is limited evidence regarding their effects on the quality of maternal healthcare, an essential factor…

INTRODUCTION: Global Health Initiatives (GHIs) have significantly improved access to healthcare globally. However, high maternal mortality rates persist in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) such as Uganda. Despite heavy investment from the GHIs, there is insufficient evidence on the effects of GHIs on the quality of care of maternal health services and yet this significantly impacts maternal outcomes. Available evidence has focused on outputs such as facility deliveries and utilisation of services. These outputs alone are not a reflection of the quality of care, which is crucial in impr…

BACKGROUND: Disrespect, abuse, discrimination, and lack of emotional support characterize intrapartum care in the health systems of many low- and middle-income countries. Although the World Health Organization (WHO) provides frameworks and guidelines to address this issue, no operational model exists that effectively incorporates WHO intrapartum care guidelines into routine public health services. We aimed to develop and pilot-test a theory-driven, service-delivery intervention package linking dignified care with perinatal mental health to promote psychosocially supportive and respectful mater

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth continues to be a leading cause of death for children under the age of 5 globally. This issue carries significant economic, psychological, and social costs for the families affected. Therefore, it is important to utilize available data to further research and understand the risk factors for preterm death.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine maternal and infant complications that influence preterm deaths in a tertiary health facility in Ghana.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of data on preterm newborns was conducted at the neonatal intensive car

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence suggests low and high maternal hemoglobin (Hb) concentrations may have adverse consequences for maternal and child health. There remain questions on specific Hb thresholds to define anemia and high Hb as well as how cutoffs may vary by anemia etiology and timing of assessment.
METHODS: We conducted an updated systematic review (using PubMed and Cochrane Review) on low (< 110 g/L) and high (≥ 130 g/L) maternal Hb concentrations and associations with a range of maternal and infant health outcomes. We examined associations by timing of Hb assessment (preconception; f

Black and African American women in the United States experience disproportionately high rates of maternal and infant mortality and morbidity, including placenta-mediated complications such as preeclampsia, preterm birth, and miscarriage. These inequities arise from the interaction of social and environmental conditions with biological pathways that become embedded over the life course, with the placenta serving as a central mediator. In this review, we examine how placental biology integrates genetic variation, epigenetic regulation, paternal contributions, immune processes, and lived social
