Maxillary Sinus Impaction of a Core Carrier Causing Sustained Apical Periodontitis, Sinusitis, and Nasal Stenosis: A 3-year Follow-up.

INTRODUCTION: The aim was to present a case report of a full-length extrusion of an obturator's core carrier into the maxillary sinus, causing clinical symptoms from the nose region with differential diagnostics aspects, which, in turn, led to several surgical treatments of the nostrils before diagnosis and correct endodontic retreatment of a maxillary right first molar. A 36-year-old man presented in 2012 with complaints from the right nostril region. Medical treatment with antibiotics and surgical procedures because of nasal stenosis resulted only in partial improvement. Five years earlier,

Eradication of pathogens from the nasopharynx after therapy of acute maxillary sinusitis with low- or high-dose amoxicillin/clavulanic acid.

The growing resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae to penicillin can be overcome by increasing the dose of the penicillin administered. This generated the recommendation that the adult dose of amoxicillin for the treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis (AMS) be increased from 1.5 g/day to 4.0 g/day. The objective of this study was to investigate whether the higher dose of amoxicillin is more effective than the previously recommended dose in eradicating S. pneumoniae from the nasopharynx of patients who present with AMS. Nasopharyngeal cultures obtained from 58 patients with AMS were studied: 30…

Odontogenic maxillary sinusitis and fungus ball development secondary to a dental root retained for more than 25 years. A case report.

The displacement of a dental root fragment into the maxillary sinus is a serious complication of tooth extraction that can give rise to maxillary sinusitis. The condition can become chronic if the intrasinusal foreign body is not promptly removed, and Aspergillus fumigatus superinfection may ultimately result, forming a fungus ball. The present study describes the case of a 50-year-old man with fungal rhinosinusitis caused by the accidental displacement of a dental root over 25 years ago. The prolonged and atypical course of the disorder produced long diagnostic and therapeutic controversy, an…
