"He was the one with the gun!" Associative memory for white and black faces seen with weapons.

Much research has found that implicit associations between Black male faces and aggression affect dispositional judgments and decision-making, but there have been few investigations into downstream effects on explicit episodic memory. The current experiment tested whether such implicit associations interact with explicit recognition memory using an associative memory paradigm in younger and older adults. Participants studied image pairs featuring faces (of Black or White males) alongside handheld objects (uncategorized, kitchenware, or weapons) and later were tested on their recognition memory

Strategic retrieval and the frontal lobes: evidence from confabulation and amnesia.

Confabulation and amnesia are considered disorders of episodic but not of semantic memory. To test the limits of this view, retrieval from episodic and semantic memory was investigated in eight confabulating and nine non-confabulating amnesic subjects, and in 17 matched control subjects, by using a personal and an historical version of the Crovitz [Unconstrained search in long-term memory, Paper presented at the meeting of the Psychonomic Society, St Louis, MO, 1973] cue-word test. In response to cue words such as letter or battle subjects had to describe in detail, respectively, a related eve

Cognitive Aging Patterns in Autism: Parallel, Accelerated, or Safeguarded?

PURPOSE: Research in autism has historically focused on childhood, leaving cognitive aging in autistic adults poorly understood. This study investigated whether cognitive aging in autism follows similar or distinct patterns compared to non-autistic adults. We also explored how subjective executive function relates to objective performance across adulthood in these groups. METHODS: Fifty-six autistic and 106 non-autistic adults (19-69 years) completed tasks assessing processing speed, verbal short-term and working memory, episodic memory (recall performance and semantic strategy use), and exec…

Amnesia and the organization of the hippocampal system.

Early hippocampal injury in humans has been found to result in a limited form of global anterograde amnesia. At issue is whether the limitation is qualitative, with the amnesia reflecting substantially greater impairment in episodic than in semantic memory, or only quantitative, with both episodic and semantic memory being partially and equivalently impaired. Evidence from neuroanatomical and lesion studies in animals suggests that the hippocampus and subhippocampal cortices form a hierarchically organized system, such that the greatest convergence of information (and, by implication, the rich

Memory complaints and cognitive performance in fibromyalgia and chronic pain: The key role of depression.

To explore the relationship between perceived cognitive problems and cognitive performance in three different samples, taking into account the possible influence of depression, catastrophizing, pain intensity, or medication. Seventy individuals with fibromyalgia, 74 with non-malignant chronic pain and 40 pain-free controls, completed measures of verbal episodic memory, sustained attention, response inhibition, depression, catastrophizing, and pain intensity. Fibromyalgia and chronic pain patients performed worse than controls in verbal memory and sustained attention, but these differences disa

Effect of ageing on neurocognitive function by stage of HIV infection: evidence from the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: The demographics of the HIV epidemic in the USA have shifted towards older age. We aimed to establish the relationship between the processes of ageing and HIV infection in neurocognitive impairment. METHODS: With longitudinal data from the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study, a long-term prospective cohort study of the natural and treated history of HIV infection among men who have sex with men in the USA, we examined the effect of ageing, HIV infection (by disease stage), and their interaction on five neurocognitive domains: information processing speed, executive function, episodic me

Telephone-based Hopkins Verbal Learning Test-Revised as a pre-screening tool for identifying SuperAgers.

OBJECTIVE: Efficient remote screening is needed to identify adults aged ≥80 years with exceptional memory, an uncommon phenotype relevant to cognitive-resilience research, before resource-intensive in-person evaluation. This study examined the optimal telephone-administered episodic-memory cutoff for identifying individuals likely to meet the in-person episodic-memory criterion used for SuperAger classification. METHOD: Retrospective analysis included 163 participants who completed multidomain telephone prescreening (orientation, attention/executive function, language, memory, depression symp

Sex differences distinguish performance in four object recognition-based memory tasks in the Pink1-/- rat model of Parkinson's disease.

Male more than female patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) experience early, sometimes prodromal non-motor deficits involving cognition and memory. These so-called mild impairments predict future risk of freezing, falls and developing PD-related dementia. Moreover, because most treatments are ineffective, these symptoms often persist and progressively worsen. Thus, there are urgent needs to better understand and better treat these signs. The work presented here highlights new ways in which rats with knockout of PTEN-induced putative kinase 1 gene (Pink1-/-) can serve as models that emulate P

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and midlife maternal cognition in a prospective cohort study.

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disorders, with recent evidence linking pre-eclampsia with vascular dementia. We examined associations of HDP with cognitive performance measured in midlife, in a prospective cohort study, the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children. Six cognitive function domains were measured 20 years after pregnancy at a mean age of 51 years. The cognition tests were repeated at clinics in the following two years. Cognitive function domains measured were immediate and delayed verbal episodic memory, wor

Certainty-weighted recognition memory: Potential applications for early detection and metacognition.

BackgroundMemory loss is a core feature of typical Alzheimer's disease (AD) and amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI). Standard memory tests such as word lists assess verbal episodic memory with delayed recall and recognition. However, actual memory fidelity is likely variable, continuous, and has a subjective component.ObjectiveWe investigated dual-processing models of episodic memory (recollection versus familiarity) using confidence ratings in a "judgment of knowing" paradigm (JOK).MethodsThis paradigm was applied to the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease (CERAD)

Human cerebellum and corticocerebellar connections involved in emotional memory enhancement.

Emotional information is better remembered than neutral information. Extensive evidence indicates that the amygdala and its interactions with other cerebral regions play an important role in the memory-enhancing effect of emotional arousal. While the cerebellum has been found to be involved in fear conditioning, its role in emotional enhancement of episodic memory is less clear. To address this issue, we used a whole-brain functional MRI approach in 1,418 healthy participants. First, we identified clusters significantly activated during enhanced memory encoding of negative and positive emotion

Interaction between emotion and memory: importance of mammillary bodies damage in a mouse model of the alcoholic Korsakoff syndrome.

Chronic alcohol consumption (CAC) can lead to the Korsakoff syndrome (KS), a memory deficiency attributed to diencephalic damage and/or to medial temporal or cortical related dysfunction. The etiology of KS remains unclear. Most animal models of KS involve thiamine-deficient diets associated with pyrithiamine treatment. Here we present a mouse model of CAC-induced KS. We demonstrate that CAC-generated retrieval memory deficits in working/ episodic memory tasks, together with a reduction of fear reactivity, result from damage to the mammillary bodies (MB). Experimental lesions of MB in non-alco

Dissociable contributions of the medial parietal cortex to recognition memory.

Human neuroimaging studies of episodic memory retrieval routinely observe the engagement of specific cortical regions beyond the medial temporal lobe. Of these, medial parietal cortex (MPC) is of particular interest given its ubiquitous, and yet distinct, functional characteristics during different types of retrieval tasks. Specifically, while recognition memory and autobiographical recall tasks are both used to probe episodic retrieval, these paradigms consistently drive distinct patterns of response within MPC. This dissociation adds to growing evidence suggesting a common principle of funct

Neurobiology of Anorexia Nervosa: Serotonin Dysfunctions Link Self-Starvation with Body Image Disturbances through an Impaired Body Memory.

The etiology of anorexia nervosa (AN) is still unclear, despite that it is a critical and potentially mortal illness. A recent neurobiological model considers AN as the outcome of dysfunctions in the neuronal processes related to appetite and emotionality (Kaye et al., 2009, 2013). However, this model still is not able to answer a critical question: What is behind body image disturbances (BIDs) in AN? The article starts its analysis from reviewing some of the studies exploring the effects of the serotonin systems in memory (episodic, working, and spatial) and its dysfunctions. The review sugge

Microemboli in cerebral circulation and alteration of cognitive abilities in patients with mechanical prosthetic heart valves.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: It has been shown previously that cerebral microemboli may occur frequently in patients with a normal mechanical heart valve (MHV) without prior history of stroke. Some arguments strongly suggest that these microemboli have a gaseous origin. In other circumstances such as extracorporeal circulation or decompression in divers, it has been demonstrated that cerebral microbubbles could lead to some deterioration in cognitive functions. Therefore, we have studied attention and memory, which are among the most impaired cognitive functions as demonstrated in previous studies,

From amnesia to dementia: ERP studies of memory and language.

Cognitive event-related potential (ERP) studies of memory and language impairments in amnesia and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are reviewed. Well-circumscribed lesions of the medial temporal lobe (MTL) or diencephalon causing an amnestic syndrome, an inability to encode and retrieve episodic memories beyond the brief duration of working memory, appear to produce altered plasticity of the late positive P600 component, but usually spare P300 and N400 components. The neuropathology of AD affects MTL and extends to neocortical association areas, causing deficits of episodic and semantic memory. In AD

Unique amnestic syndrome after isolated left anterolateral thalamic stroke: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The thalamus plays a key role in motor and sensory processes of the brain. Though thalamic stroke is among the less frequent, even a minimal lesion can result in a serious impairment and long-lasting disability. After thalamic stroke, cases of dysexecutive syndrome and so-called diencephalic amnesia have been observed, yet the precise characterisation or categorisation of such amnestic syndrome is not available. Pure amnesia can be the one and only indication of a thalamic lesion. We present a unique case of a patient after left anterolateral thalamic stroke suffering from isolated

Objective metamemory testing captures awareness of deficit in Alzheimer's disease.

For reasons that remain unknown, there is marked inter-person variability in awareness of episodic memory loss in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Existing research designs, primarily subjective in nature, have been at a relative disadvantage for evaluating disordered metamemory and its relation to the clinical and neuropathological heterogeneity of AD, as well as its prognosis for various disease outcomes. The current study sought to establish an objective means of evaluating metamemory in AD by modifying traditional metacognitive paradigms in which participants are asked to make predi

Multimodal Feature Integration in the Angular Gyrus during Episodic and Semantic Retrieval.

UNLABELLED: Much evidence from distinct lines of investigation indicates the involvement of angular gyrus (AnG) in the retrieval of both episodic and semantic information, but the region's precise function and whether that function differs across episodic and semantic retrieval have yet to be determined. We used univariate and multivariate fMRI analysis methods to examine the role of AnG in multimodal feature integration during episodic and semantic retrieval. Human participants completed episodic and semantic memory tasks involving unimodal (auditory or visual) and multimodal (audio-visual) s

Abnormal semantic knowledge in a case of developmental amnesia.

An important theory holds that semantic knowledge can develop independently of episodic memory. One strong source of evidence supporting this independence comes from the observation that individuals with early hippocampal damage leading to developmental amnesia generally perform normally on standard tests of semantic memory, despite their profound impairment in episodic memory. However, one aspect of semantic memory that has not been explored is conceptual structure. We built on the theoretically important distinction between intrinsic features of object concepts (e.g., shape, colour, parts) a
