[The role of serotonin-modulated anticonsolidation protein in memory formation in rats in a shuttle box].

Two series of experiments were carried out in Wistar male rats. In the first series, rats were trained to acquire conditioning in a shuttle box to 50% and 80% learning criteria. In the animals of the experimental group that achieved 50% learning criterion, a significant decrease in the levels of serotonin-modulated anticonsolidation protein (SMAP) (solid phase, indirect ELISA-test) was observed in the temporal cortex as compared to the animals of the active control group. In the animals of the experimental group that achieved 80% learning criterion, such a decrease was found in the occipital a

Reduced fractional anisotropy in the visual limbic pathway of young adults witnessing domestic violence in childhood.

Witnessing domestic violence (WDV) is a traumatic childhood experience associated with increased risk for depression, posttraumatic stress disorder and reduced IQ scores. Specific affects of WDV on brain development have not been assessed. We sought to ascertain whether WDV was associated with abnormalities in white matter (WM) tract integrity using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Twenty subjects who witnessed domestic violence (16F/4M, mean age 22.4 ± 2.48 years) but were not physically or sexually abused were compared to 27 healthy controls (19F/8M, 21.9 ± 1.97 years) without exposure to tra

Folate deficiency in rat pups during weaning causes learning and memory deficits.

Folate is essential for fetal development, and its deficiency during gestation causes behavioural deficits in the offspring. The present study investigated its influence during weaning on brain function in the pups of rats that were put on a folate-deficient (FD) diet on postnatal day (PND) 1. Systemic folate deficiency in pups on the FD diet (n 15) was evident from the dramatically lower hepatic folate concentrations (median 23·7, range 8·1-48·4 ng/mg protein) and higher homocysteine concentrations (median 27·7, range 14·7-45·5 pmol/mg protein), respectively, compared with those of pups on th

Unraveling the potential of hypothalamic deep brain stimulation for obesity: Impacts on memory, neuroplasticity and brain metabolism in the Zucker rat.

The lateral hypothalamus (LH) plays a key role in regulating energy balance and appetite, making it a potential target for deep brain stimulation (DBS) in treatment-resistant obesity. In this study, we evaluated the short and long-term in vivo effects of continuous LH-DBS over 15 days in a genetic model of obesity: the Zucker rat. We examined changes in body weight, brain glucose metabolism (via positron emission tomography, PET), and memory performance, along with ex vivo neuroplasticity in different hippocampal layers one month post-treatment. Contrary to expectations, continuous LH-DBS did

Evidence of a Causal Role for mid-Ventrolateral Prefrontal Cortex Based Functional Networks in Retrieving High-Fidelity Memory.

Functional neuroimaging studies have implicated regions of both ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC) and angular gyrus in processes associated with retrieving goal-relevant information, which increases the fidelity and richness of long-term memory (LTM). To further investigate the roles of these cortical regions as nodes in functional networks with memory regions of the medial temporal lobe (MTL), we used fMRI-guided, 1 Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to perturb normal neuronal function. The aim was to test the causal roles of left mid-VLPFC and left angular gyrus (AG

Separate functional properties of NMDARs regulate distinct aspects of spatial cognition.

N-methyl-d-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) at excitatory synapses are central to activity-dependent synaptic plasticity and learning and memory. NMDARs act as ionotropic and metabotropic receptors by elevating postsynaptic calcium concentrations and by direct intracellular protein signaling. In the forebrain, these properties are controlled largely by the auxiliary GluN2 subunits, GluN2A and GluN2B. While calcium conductance through NMDAR channels and intracellular protein signaling make separate contributions to synaptic plasticity, it is not known if these properties individually influence lear

Learning-assisted transient-response analysis of nitride high-electron-mobility transistor aptasensors for rapid carcinoembryonic antigen detection.

Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is widely used for tumor monitoring, yet electrical biosensor readouts are commonly based on endpoint or steady-state signals and therefore discard information contained in the early transient response. We developed a learning-assisted readout for an existing AlGaN/GaN high-electron-mobility transistor (HEMT) aptasensor by integrating transient drain-source current sequences with four steady-state I-V descriptors in a bidirectional long short-term memory-multilayer perceptron (LSTM-MLP) model. Bias-voltage comparison identified V_DS = 0.5 V as the preferred opera

Hybrid LSTM-XGBoost framework with city embeddings for CO2 emissions forecasting and scenario comparison.

Developments of cities are always accompanied by environmental sacrifice, especially increasing CO2 emission is one of the significant drivers of climate warming. Accurate city-level CO2 emissions forecasting is critical for urban carbon management, where those cities are undergoing economic transitions and exhibiting divergent carbon emissions trends. Taking Hebei as an example, this study developed a hybrid deep learning framework combining LSTM networks and XGBoost models via adaptive power-law weighting, validated through a comprehensive ablation study, and further compared six scenario pr

Tau oligomers impair memory and synaptic plasticity through the cellular prion protein.

Deposition of abnormally phosphorylated tau aggregates is a central event leading to neuronal dysfunction and death in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other tauopathies. Among tau aggregates, oligomers (TauOs) are considered the most toxic. AD brains show significant increase in TauOs compared to healthy controls, their concentration correlating with the severity of cognitive deficits and disease progression. In vitro and in vivo neuronal TauO exposure leads to synaptic and cognitive dysfunction, but their mechanisms of action are unclear. Evidence suggests that the cellular prion protein (PrPC)

AI-powered chronic kidney disease detection integrating TabNet and LSTM for precision diagnosis.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with early detection being vital for effective treatment and management. Traditional diagnostic methods often struggle with the difficulty of CKD datasets, leading to delays in diagnosis and intervention. Despite advancements in machine learning, there remains a need for more effective and accurate models that can manage the intricacies of CKD data. This paper proposes an advanced AI-based system for early detection and diagnosis of CKD by developing an AI-based system that can efficiently handle complicated

Long-term retention of real-world experiences in a patient with profound amnesia.

The medial temporal lobe (MTL) is known to be critical for healthy memory function, but patients with MTL damage can, under certain circumstances, demonstrate successful learning of novel information encountered outside the laboratory. Here, we describe a patient, D.C., with extensive but focal bilateral MTL damage centering primarily on his hippocampus, whose memory for real-world experiences was assessed. Tests of remote memory indicated at least some capacity to retrieve specific details. To test his anterograde memory, he was taken on a tour of the NIH Clinical Center, with unique events o

Glucosylceramide synthase inhibition reduces ganglioside GM3 accumulation, alleviates amyloid neuropathology, and stabilizes remote contextual memory in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Gangliosides are highly enriched in the brain and are critical for its normal development and function. However, in some rare neurometabolic diseases, a deficiency in lysosomal ganglioside hydrolysis is pathogenic and leads to early-onset neurodegeneration, neuroinflammation, demyelination, and dementia. Increasing evidence also suggests that more subtle ganglioside accumulation contributes to the pathogenesis of more common neurological disorders including Alzheimer's disease (AD). Notably, ganglioside GM3 levels are elevated in the brains of AD patients and in several mouse model

Stimulus-selective response plasticity in the visual cortex: an assay for the assessment of pathophysiology and treatment of cognitive impairment associated with psychiatric disorders.

Long-term potentiation (LTP) is a form of experimentally induced enhancement of chemical synaptic transmission that has long been proposed as a model of the endogenous processes of synaptic plasticity that mediate memory. There is a large body of evidence that the molecular mechanisms underlying experimentally induced LTP also subserve various forms of naturally occurring, experience-dependent synaptic plasticity in animals and humans. Here we describe a phenomenon called stimulus-specific response potentiation (SRP), which occurs in the primary visual cortex of mice as a result of repeated ex

DREADD-inactivation of dorsal CA1 pyramidal neurons in mice impairs retrieval of object and spatial memories.

The hippocampus, a medial temporal lobe brain region, is critical for the consolidation of information from short-term memory into long-term episodic memory and for spatial memory that enables navigation. Hippocampal damage in humans has been linked to amnesia and memory loss, characteristic of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. Numerous studies indicate that the rodent hippocampus contributes significantly to long-term memory for spatial and nonspatial information. For example, muscimol-induced depression of CA1 neuronal activity in the dorsal hippocampus impairs the encoding, consolida

Impairment of object recognition, object location and spatial working memory performance in inbred RHA vs. RLA rats.

The inbred Roman rat strains, which have been selected and bred for their very high (RHA) or extremely poor (RLA) ability to acquire the two-way active avoidance task, constitute a bidirectional genetic model in which each strain differs from the other and/or from "standard" laboratory rat strains in a large number of behavioral and neurobiological phenotypes. Relative to Roman low-avoidance (RLA) rats, the Roman High-avoidance (RHA) rats exhibit increased mesolimbic dopamine function, social deficits, and impaired attention and cognitive flexibility, besides many other neurobehavioral phenoty

Anterograde amnesia linked to benzodiazepines.

Benzodiazepines, shown to affect memory, can produce anterograde amnesia (i.e., a loss of memory for events occurring forward in time). Following the ingestion of a benzodiazepine, short-term memory is not affected, but long-term memory is impaired. The memory loss may occur because events are not transferred from short-term memory to long-term memory and thus not consolidated into memory storage. Information stored prior to the ingestion of a benzodiazepine is not affected. Memory impairment is more likely in benzodiazepines that have a high benzodiazepine-receptor affinity, that accumulate i

The role of prefrontal lobes in psychonervous memory in vertebrates.

The memory phenomena are classified into image memory, emotional memory and conditioned reflex memory. It is assumed that prefrontal area is critically involved in the image memory, and in particular, in short-term image memory. On the other hand, both emotional and conditianed reflex memory do not depend on the prefrontal area but they are controlled by other parts of the neocortex and by paleocortex. The intimate nature of both short-term and long-term memory is discussed.

Auditory and visual memory span: cognitive processing by TMR individuals with Down syndrome or other etiologies.

Auditory and visual memory span for letters and component memory processes of TMR young adults with Down syndrome or other etiologies was examined. Component processes of the span task included long-term memory access for labels for the stimuli and memory for the order in which the stimuli were presented. Results indicated that although all subjects had relatively poor auditory memory spans, the Down syndrome group was especially poor at long-term memory access for stimulus identification and at short-term storage and processing of auditory information.
