Between 2007 and 2009, a cross-sectional survey was carried out in Maranhão State, Brazil to estimate the seroprevalence of and risk factors for bovine brucellosis. Brucella suis has been recognized as the major etiological agent of human brucellosis in areas free from Brucella melitensis infection.
